Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu (born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, 26 August 1910 – 5 September 1997), commonly known as Mother Teresa and honoured in the Roman Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary. [8] She was born in Skopje (now the capital of North Macedonia), then part of the Koso- vo Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire. After living in Skopje for eighteen years, she moved to Ireland and then to India, where she lived for most of her life. In 1950, Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congre- gation that had over 4,500 nuns and was active in 133 countries in 2012. The congre- gation manages homes for people who are dying of HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis. It also runs soup kitchens, dispensaries, mobile clinics, children’s and family counselling programmes, as well as orphanages and schools. Members take vows of chastity, pover- ty, and obedience, and also profess a fourth vow—to give “wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor.” Teresa received a number of honours, including the 1962 Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize and 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.

In introducing the Catholic Directory, it is our pleasing duty to reiterate our grateful thanks for the valuable assistance and in formation received from the Prelates and the Superiors of the Missions mentioned in this book. The compilation of the Catholic Direct ory involves no small amount of labour, which, however, we believe is not spent in vain, for the Directory seems to be of great use to many working in the same field. But We would like to see the Directory develop into a still more useful publication and rendered acceptable to a wider circle. This can only come about with the practical "sympathy and active co-operation of all ^ friends and well-wishers. We again give the Catholic Directory to ¿the public, knowing that it is still incom plete, but trusting that all and everyone will ¿help us to ensure its final success. ^ MADRAS, THE COMPILER* Feast of St. Agnes, 1 9 2 7 . CATHOLIC DIRECTORY ' M OF INDIA, rAXLSTArt, B uRm a * tfb C £ Yl a- tf< 1922 72nd ANNUAL ISSUE OF THE MADRAS CATHOLIC DIRECTORY AND ANNUAL GENERAL REGISTER PUBLISHED BY THE CATHOLIC SUPPLY SOCIETY, MADRAS. PRINTED AT THE “ GOOD PASTOR ” PRESS, BROADWAY, MADRAS, M T +Z / , 7 1 Nihil obstet : J. BEUKERS, Censor Deputatus. Imprimatur : * J. AELEN, Archiepiscopus Madraspatanus. Madras, die 21a mensis Decembris, 1921. PREFACE Another year has been added to the cen turies buried in the past, another year has been ushered in by joyful hymns. It is the old, old story. On the threshold of the new year we always resolve to spend the ensuing one better in the light we gained during the preceding twelve months. It is the old, old story. The 1921 edition of the Catholic Directory of India, Burma and Ceylon was far from complete, and the respective Chancellarles seeing this resolved no doubt that 1922 would see a copy unheard of for accuracy even in the life of this useful publication. All the ’ reports came in. Not one point—if we except Statistics—for the Compiler to complain about. To all and every one our best thanks. Y et there is in the present issue one omis sion which we regret. Three times we wrote asking for a photo and a brief sketch of the ^ new Vicar Apostolic of Trichur, and we were disappointed not to receive either in time for insertion. The notes inserted will be appreciated by all our readers. The contributors are heartily thanked for these sketches. It may be recorded that the Compiler is grateful for any useful suggestion.

  • S Mercy to the Poorest of the Poor
Icons of Mercy: Spreading God’s mercy to the poorest of the poor “[L]ove makes itself particularly noticed in contact with suffering, injustice and poverty — in contact with the whole historical ‘human condition’ … It is precisely the mode and sphere in which love manifests itself that in biblical language is called ‘mercy.'” — Pope St. John Paul II, Dives in Misericordia, No. 3 If you read that one person in 1950 began an organization in a small part of the world and that 50 years later it had more than 4,000 workers at 610 locations in 123 countries, you might think you were reading about a successful multinational corporation. These statistics, however, reflect the incredible work of Blessed Mother Teresa of Kolkata and the religious institute she founded, the Missionaries of Charity. The numbers are impressive — and hard to ignore — and they brought a lot of attention to Mother Teresa during her lifetime, both positive and negative. Often, the reaction went hand in hand with the person’s attitude regarding faith: Those who identified as atheists tended to be hostile, while believers tended to be sympathetic. The Catholic Church is unequivocal in its praise of Mother Teresa, not for any human success but for her yielding to God’s will. By beatifying her on Oct. 19, 2003, the Church recommends Mother Teresa as a model disciple of Christ and, more pointedly, as a model of one who received and shared God’s mercy. Early life Born Aug. 26, 1910, in Skopje, Macedonia, to Nikola and Drana Bojaxhiu, Mother Teresa, who was born Gonxha Agnes, was surrounded by examples of vibrant faith in her family and parish.
