AELEN, Archbishop o f Madras Madras, 17th December 1924. PREFACE. This, the Seventy-Fifth issue of the Catholic Directory of India, Burma and Ceylon, goes out under the happy auspices of a Blessing from the Visitor Apostolic to India. His Excellency the Most Revel. Alexis H. Lepicier, O.S.M., D D ., has very graciously blessed the Compiler and all those who have co-operated with him in bringing out the Directory. That this issue has merited in any special manner this courteous treat ment, is, to the Compiler, a matter of doubt, for he is fully aware that in spite of every effort at accuracy, errors and misprints have crept in. Yet, he feels sure that this Volume, like its, renowned predecessors, goes forth on its annual mission of usefulness and interest to a large number of Catholics of India, Burma and Ceylon. In the name of his Co-operators and in his own name, the Compiler thanks His Excellency the Visitor Apostolic for his very kind thought and Blessing. s It is a pleasant duty also to the Compiler to thank all those who have helped him in getting out this issue, though he has also to witzs/on confess that a few have failed in submitting >the usual sacred returns. To Rev. J. c. ¿5 Houpert S.J., of Trichinopoly, the writer of ^ that interesting and instructive article Christianity in India, based on statistics, the the Compiler is deeply indebted, and to those who have kindly submitted suggestions for improving the Directory he proffers the hope that the next issue will be able to embody them. Though it is not the legitimate task of the Prefacer to pass in review the chief events of the History of the Catholic Church in India during the last year, yet he cannot refrain from remarking that undoubtedly the outstanding feature to Indian Ecclesiastical History, is the Visit of the Papal Representa tive to India, the Visitor Apostolic, whose presence in our midst is an earnest of the abiding interest of our Holy Father in the Church in India and a promise of its greater progress in the future. The Necrology this year chronicles the death of many zealous Missionaries to whom the call of the Master came during the last year, and prominent among them is the Most Rev. Brice Meuleman, late Archbishop of Calcutta, who was called to his reward after 23 years of arduous labour directing the destinies of one of the largest Archdioceses of India. Once more the Compiler thanks His Excellency the Visitor Apostolic for his kind Blessing and all those who have helped in the compilation of this the Seventy-Fifth issue of the Catholic Directory of India, Burma and Ceylon, THE COMPILER, Co n t e n t s . THE BENEDICTINE FOUNDATIONS IN XISHAN AND CHENGDU, 1929-1952 Fr. Luke Dysinger, OSB Mission and Monasticism, Studia Anselmiana 158, Analecta Monastica 13, (Sant’ Anselmo, Rome; EOS Verlag, Germany, 2013), pp. 185-195. The story of the Benedictines of Szechwan Province during the first half of the Twentieth Century can be divided into three epochs or phases encompassing two geographic locations. The three phases correspond to the first three superiors of the monastery, each of whom possessed a unique vision of how Benedictine monasticism could best serve the needs of the Catholic Church in China. The two geographic locations are: Xishan, near Shunqing, where the community was first established in 1929; and Chengdu, the capital of Szechwan Province where in 1942 the monks were compelled by the vicissitudes World War II to seek refuge 1: CONTEMPLATIVE ASPIRATIONS 1927-1933: Xihan, Prior Jehan Joliet In 1926 Dom Jehan Joliet, a monk of the Abbey of Solesmes, and Dom Pie de Cocqueau of the Abbey of St. André (now know as SintAndries, Zevenkerken), departed the port of Marseilles for Beijing. They were to establish a new monastic foundation that would be a canonical dependency of St. André.1 The Benedictine Abbey of St. André had been designated at its inception as a “Monastery for the Missions”. Since 1898 the community had been committed to monastic missionary work in Brazil by its founder, Abbot Gerard Van Caloen; and in 1910 his successor, Theodore Neve, pledged the community to work in Africa by accepting the Apostolic Prefecture of Katanga in the Congo. Through their publication of Les Bulletin des Missions the monks of St.

(Lk. 5:4). St. Aloysius Minor Seminary has taken these words as the motto for the academic year 2016-2017. By "going deep" we find our Christian vocation and mission especially in having a personal relationshion with the living Christ. When Peter and his companions acted according to the command of the Lord, they had a miraculous catch (Lk. 5:6). In the same way, our Seminarians strive to develop a deeper relationship with Jesus in everything we do, we are, and we are called to be. In many areas of life, especially in our discipleship, we can work so hard and seem to have so little to show for it.

  • The Holy See
The Holy See LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS TO THE BISHOPS OF INDIA Dear Brother Bishops, 1. The remarkable varietas Ecclesiarum, the result of a long historical, cultural, spiritual and disciplinary development, constitutes a treasure of the Church, regina in vestitu deaurato circumdata varietate (cf. Ps 44 and Leo XIII, Orientalium Dignitas), who awaits her groom with the fidelity and patience of the wise virgin, equipped with an abundant supply of oil, so that the light of her lamp may enlighten all peoples in the long night of awaiting the Lord’s coming. This variety of ecclesial life, which shines with great splendour throughout lands and nations, is also found in India. The Catholic Church in India has its origins in the preaching of the Apostle Thomas. It developed through contact with the Churches of Chaldean and Antiochian traditions and through the efforts of Latin missionaries. The history of Christianity in this great country thus led to three distinct sui iuris Churches, corresponding to ecclesial expressions of the same faith celebrated in different rites according to the three liturgical, spiritual, theological and disciplinary traditions. Although this situation has sometimes led to tensions in the course of history, today we can admire a Christian presence that is both rich and beautiful, complex and unique. 2. It is essential for the Catholic Church to reveal her face in all its beauty to the world, in the richness of her various traditions. For this reason the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, which celebrates its centenary year, having been established through the farsightedness of Pope Benedict XV in 1917, has encouraged, where necessary, the restoration of Eastern Catholic traditions, and ensured their protection, as well as respect for the dignity and rights of these ancient Churches.

  • The Concept of “Sister Churches” in Catholic-Orthodox Relations Since
THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA The Concept of “Sister Churches” In Catholic-Orthodox Relations since Vatican II A DISSERTATION Submitted to the Faculty of the School of Theology and Religious Studies Of The Catholic University of America In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree Doctor of Philosophy © Copyright All Rights Reserved By Will T. Cohen Washington, D.C. 2010 The Concept of “Sister Churches” In Catholic-Orthodox Relations since Vatican II Will T. Cohen, Ph.D. Director: Paul McPartlan, D.Phil. Closely associated with Catholic-Orthodox rapprochement in the latter half of the 20 th century was the emergence of the expression “sister churches” used in various ways across the confessional division. Patriarch Athenagoras first employed it in this context in a letter in 1962 to Cardinal Bea of the Vatican Secretariat for the Promotion of Christian Unity, and soon it had become standard currency in the bilateral dialogue. Yet today the expression is rarely invoked by Catholic or Orthodox officials in their ecclesial communications. As the Polish Catholic theologian Waclaw Hryniewicz was led to say in 2002, “This term…has now fallen into disgrace.” This dissertation traces the rise and fall of the expression “sister churches” in modern Catholic-Orthodox relations and argues for its rehabilitation as a means by which both Catholic West and Orthodox East may avoid certain ecclesiological imbalances toward which each respectively tends in its separation from the other. Catholics who oppose saying that the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church are sisters, or that the church of Rome is one among several patriarchal sister churches, generally fear that if either of those things were true, the unicity of the Church would be compromised and the Roman primacy rendered ineffective.
