Ancora bambino andò a Roma presso lo zio Andrea Adami, maestro di musica al servizio del cardinale Pietro Ottoboni e poi cantore nella Cappella pontificia, il quale gli fece ottenere un posto in seminario. Fuggito dal semi­ nario si recò a Parigi dove si arruolò per più di due anni. Fatto prigioniero ed ammalatosi gravemente, ottenne il congedo per intercessione dell'Ottoboni e, perdonato dallo zio, rientrò a Roma, dove si diede agli studi letterari e filologici. Nel 1714 si iscrisse all'accade­ mia letteraria Arcadia con il nome di Filocle Epeio e nel 1717 divenne bibliotecario del cardinale Giuseppe Renato Imperiali. Fu autore di molte opere rimaste manoscritte e di un solo lavoro dato alle stampe a Roma nel 1716: Arcadicorum volumen primum. Morì a Roma il 9 gennaio1719 e fu sepolto nella basilica dei ss. Lorenzo e Damaso. Nel1522 e 1528 è detto massaro del Capitolo. Nel1527 divenne pievano nella parrocchiale di s. Croce di Bleggio ma rinunciò l'anno seguente in favore di Giovanni Tisi. Titolare della pieve di Torra dal1530 pur senza risiedervi, fuvicario generale nel1534 e nel1537 . Nel1537 e1538 fu commissario della visita pastorale alla diocesi di Trento voluta da Bernardo Clesio. Nel 1537 , durante lo svolgimento della visita, venne investito del priorato di s. Ilario presso Rovereto e fu anche commissario per la fabbrica della chiesa di s. Maria di Civezzano. Fu costantemente presente agli atti capitolari, presenziòall'elezione del successore diBernardo Clesio, Cristoforo Madruzzo e partecipò alle prime fasi del cOncilio di Trento come procu­ ratore dell'abate di s. Alberti d'Enna, Giuseppe Vittorio 1583, 24 84 Nato a Pergine il 24 luglio 16 23 da Felice e Anna Ginevra de Bellini, studiò lettere a Trento e passò poi a Roma presso il "Collegium Germanicum". Dal1644 fu iscritto all'università di Padova dove si laureò in giurisprudenza il19 maggio 1648. Divenuto canonico della catte­ drale di Trento nel1656 , fu arcidiacono nel1663, decano e vicario generale nel16 70. Nel 16 78 entrò in possesso assieme al fratello Francesco Felice del palazzo Calepini nel quale trasferì la sua residenza. Fu nominato principe vescovo di Trento nel16 89 ma la conferma pontificia di Innocenza XII el' investitura temporale daparte dell'imperatore giunsero solo nel 16 91. Morì il 31 dicembre 16 95 e fu sepolto in cattedrale. Cinquecentine a lui appartenute sono conservate presso la Biblioteca della parrocchia di s. Maria Maggiore di Trento, depositata presso la Biblioteca diocesana "A. Rosmini", e presso la Biblioteca del seminario teologico di Trento.

Non vi nascondo di averci pensato per molto tempo, dubbioso, circa i tanti aspetti su cui avrei dovuto soffermarmi e una delle domande che mi sono subito posto è stata: ma oltre alla figura di padre modello che io conoscevo, cos'altro conosco della vita di mio padre? E qui ho avuto delle perplessità ..... sì dico perplessità perché tutti i padri presumo hanno un determinato comportamento con i figli, dettato dal ruolo, c'è chi lo fà con più severità e chi meno, chi è pedante e chi meno, chi è accondiscendente e chi meno e via dicendo ma sicuramente tutti si apprestano a svolgere questo compito basilare con uno sconfinato e immenso amore !!! Ma un padre oltre a questo è anche un “uomo”ed è proprio il profilo umano, di uomo tra gli uomini, che mi ha portato ad iniziare questo lavoro, oserei dire di ricerca, esegetico, di tutti gli scritti e archiviazioni varie che con pazienza e passione certosina egli aveva iniziato ed implementato nei vari anni della sua vita. Ho avuto la fortuna di crescere in una famiglia molto unita, sotto tutti gli aspetti. Mio padre apparteneva a quelle belle famiglie di una volta, numerose: erano otto figli, madre, padre e “zizì” a carico (una zia di mia padre, sorella minore di mia nonna, la quale viveva sotto lo stesso tetto a causa di lievi problemi invalidanti) e come tradizione comanda, tutti i figli maschi e dico tutti nessuno escluso, hanno ereditato dal padre l'arte della lavorazione del legno.

Blanchard Marquette University, 2018 This dissertation sheds further light on the nature of church reform and the roots of the Second Vatican Council (1962–65) through a study of eighteenth-century Catholic reformers who anticipated Vatican II. The most striking of these examples is the Synod of Pistoia (1786), the high-water mark of “late Jansenism.” Most of the reforms of the Synod were harshly condemned by Pope Pius VI in the Bull Auctorem fidei (1794), and late Jansenism was totally discredited in the increasingly ultramontane nineteenth-century Catholic Church. Nevertheless, many of the reforms implicit or explicit in the Pistoian agenda – such as an exaltation of the role of bishops, an emphasis on infallibility as a gift to the entire church, religious liberty, a simpler and more comprehensible liturgy that incorporates the vernacular, and the encouragement of lay Bible reading and Christocentric devotions – were officially promulgated at Vatican II.

Hanawalt Advisor History Graduate Program Professor Terri Hessler ABSTRACT From the death of every pope until the election of his successor in the early modern era, the entire bureaucratic and judicial apparatus of the state in Rome and the Papal States effectively ceased to function. During this interregnum, known as the sede vacante (literally, “the vacant see”), violence and disorder dramatically increased as the papal government temporarily lost its control over the populace and its monopoly of violence. The College of Cardinals and local civic governments throughout the Papal States, authorities deputized to regulate affairs during sede vacante, failed to quell the upsurge of violence that commenced immediately upon the pope’s death. Contemporary observers and modern scholars have labeled the violence of sede vacante as meaningless and irrational. I argue, rather, that this period of unrest gave Romans and subjects of the Papal States an opportunity to perform actions increasingly forbidden by the centralizing papal government—and thus ultimately to limit the power of the government and prevent the development of the papacy into an absolute monarchy. Acting as individuals or as collectivities, Romans and papal subjects sought revenge against old enemies, attacked hated outsiders, criticized papal policies, and commented on the papal election.

Padre Agostino Gemelli and the crusade to rechristianize Italy, 1878–1959: Part one Abstract Padre Agostino Gemelli (1878-1959) was an outstanding figure in Catholic culture and a shrewd operator on many levels in Italy, especially during the Fascist period. Yet he remains little examined or understood. Scholars tend to judge him solely in light of the Fascist regime and mark him as the archetypical clerical fascist. Gemelli founded the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan in 1921, the year before Mussolini came to power, in order to form a new leadership class for a future Catholic state. This religiously motivated political goal was intended to supersede the anticlerical Liberal state established by the unifiers of modern Italy in 1860. After Mussolini signed the Lateran Pacts with the Vatican in 1929, Catholicism became the officialeligion r of Italy and Gemelli’s university, under the patronage of Pope Pius XI (1922-1939), became a laboratory for Catholic social policies by means of which the church might bring the Fascist state in line with canon law and papal teachings.
