Marquette University, [email protected] Preface While doing research in Vienna for my dissertation on relations between Church and State in Austria between the wars I became intrigued by the outward appearance of the public housing projects put up by Red Vienna at the same time. They seemed to have a martial cast to them not at all restricted to the famous Karl-Marx-Hof so, against advice that I would find nothing, I decided to see what could be found in the archives of the Stadtbauamt to tie the architecture of the program to the civil war of 1934 when the structures became the principal focus of conflict. I found no direct tie anywhere in the documents but uncovered some circumstantial evidence that might be explored in the future. One reason for publishing these notes is to save researchers from the same dead end I ran into. This is not to say no evidence was ever present because there are many missing documents in the sequence which might turn up in the future—there is more than one complaint to be found about staff members taking documents and not returning them—and the socialists who controlled the records had an interest in denying any connection both before and after the civil war. Certain kinds of records are simply not there including assessments of personnel which are in the files of the Magistratsdirektion not accessible to the public and minutes of most meetings within the various Magistrats Abteilungen connected with the program. -

WEISSBURGUNDER 2012 Wine-description: The Weissburgunder impresses by virtue of exotic fruit aromas such as mango and papaya, through a nutty finish and general harmony. The extract-rich body and a finely integrated under- lying acidity lend this Pinot blanc elegance and depth. On the variety and origins of this wine: From its original home in the vineyards of Champagne and Burgundy, the Weißburgunder (Pinot blanc) grape made its way to Austria, where it is offered ideal conditions by the Klosterneuburg Monastery Wine Estate’s vineyards in Kahlenbergerdorf. Surrounded by the slopes of the Nußberg, the Kahlenberg and the Leopoldsberg and bordered on the east by the Danube, these vineyards produce superior quality year after year. Wine Estate of Klosterneuburg Monastery: Since its foundation in 1114 Klosterneuburg monastery has been growing wine and therefore is the oldest wine estate of Austria. With 108 Hectares of vineyards it is one of the country‘s largest and most renowned estates. The vineyards are situated in selected top locations in Klosterneuburg, Vienna, Gumpoldskirchen and Tattendorf. Since the year 2009 it is the first carbon neutral wine estate in Europe. Neustift Am Walde Salmannsdorf
Aus der Döblinger Geschichtswerkstatt Neustift am Walde Salmannsdorf Neustift am Walde Um etwa 1330 tauchte in der Nähe des alten Chlaizing am oberen Krottenbach ein neues Dorf auf, das als Zeilendorf (Bachzeile) am nördlichen Krottenbachufer lag. Das südliche Ufer des Krottenbachs wurde erst Jahrhunderte später besiedelt. Die erste erhaltene urkundliche Erwähnung fällt auf den 24. April 1330, als sich mehrere Gemeinden zur Finanzierung eines Gotteshauses (einer kleinen Kapelle) in Ober-Sievering verpflichteten. Das Stift Klosterneuburg, bis in die Gegenwart für den Ort von größter Bedeutung, besaß bereits damals Zehentrechte in Neustift. Auch der Weinbau muss wichtig gewesen sein (es wird doebling.at - von einem Weinzehent gesprochen). Die Grundherrschaft besaß ein Ritter Heinrich von Rauhenstein, der diese aber am 22. April 1355 an Jakob Löffler verkaufte. Über weitere Zwischenbesitzer kam die Grundherrschaft an den www.wien Wiener Bürger Ulrich den Zinken (1385). Dieser kaufte sie um 320 Pfund Pfennig, eine damals recht beachtliche Summe. Ulrich der Zinker muss eine sehr einflussreiche Persönlichkeit gewesen sein. Er war Amtmann sowohl des Herzogs doebling.at doebling.at - Albrecht III. als auch des Stiftes Klosterneuburg. Aber auch andere Wiener Bürger hatten bereits Interesse an Gründen in Neustift, wie zahlreiche Urkunden aus dieser Zeit beweisen. Beispiel: Jacob de Poll, Verweser der »Chapellen Unser schulz@wien Frauen in der purger Rathaus ze Wienne«, nannte mehrere Häuser und Weingärten in Neustift sein eigen (1359). Die Bauern selbst waren meist Pächter und Grundholde (zum Besitz gehörende, schollegebundene Eigenleute), die Weinbau, ein wenig Ackerbau und etwas Viehzucht betrieben. Am 6. November 1413 verkauften die Brüder Hans und Michael Zink, die Söhne Ulrichs, die Tel. -

I chociaz˙wielu naszych rodaków wy- warło wpływ na z˙ycie umysłowe czy polityczne tego miasta 1, to jedynie Sobieski jest patronem zarówno placu, jak i ulicy w dawnej metropolii Habs- burgów. Polski król jest uczczony ponadto naste˛puj ˛acymi pami ˛atkami: kap- liczk ˛a, czterema tablicami pami ˛atkowymi oraz dwoma pomnikami 2. Jan III Sobieski to równiez˙ postac´ wymieniana w wie˛kszos´ci niemieckoje˛zycznych przewodników po tym mies´cie 3. Bez w˛atpienia Sobieski został nie bez powodu uczczony wszystkimi pa- mi ˛atkami, jakie s ˛amu pos´wie˛cone w Wiedniu. Jego ogromne zasługi podkres´- laj˛azgodnie nie tylko rodzimi historycy. WEINKULTUR STADTBILDWIEN WEINKULTUR STADTBILD WIEN WEINBAU IN WIEN Als einzige Großstadt der Welt verfügt Wien über ökonomisch bedeutenden Weinbau innerhalb der Stadtgrenzen. Der Weinbau trägt wesentlich zur kulturellen Identität Wiens bei und ist ein wichtiger Wirtschaftsfaktor. Die alten Weinorte prägen darüber hinaus auch das unverwechselbare Landschaftsbild dieser Stadt. In dieser Broschüre stehen die stadtplanerischen Aspekte des Wiener Weinbaus im Zentrum. Der Folder bietet einen Überblick darüber, mit welchen Instrumenten die wertvollen Weinbaugebiete gesichert werden können und welchen Spielraum bzw. welche Möglichkeiten die Stadtplanung dabei hat. Der Weinbau reicht zurück in die Zeit der Illyrer und Kelten, doch erst die Römer führten professionelle Methoden des Anbaues und der Kelterung ein. Da Wien im Einflussbereich des pannonischen Klimas liegt, sind die Bedingungen für den Weinbau ideal. Denn der Weinbau ist nur in jenen Gebieten möglich, in denen die mittlere Jahrestemperatur zwischen +9 und +21 Grad liegt. Ein zeitiges Frühjahr, ein warmer, trockener Sommer und ein milder, trockener Herbst sind nötig. Bei Frühjahrs- und Herbstfrösten ist Weinbau unrentabel, selbst wenn der Sommer warm ist. Die Vegetationsdauer der Weinkulturen liegt zwischen 180 und 200 Tagen. Die Weinbaufläche Wiens beträgt insgesamt ca. 700 ha, wobei etwa 80 % Weißwein- und 20 % Rotweinsorten angepflanzt sind. Die Vermarktung des Weines erfolgt überwiegend in Heurigenbe- trieben (Buschenschankbetrieben) der Winzer, wobei jedoch in den letzten Jahren der Flaschenweinverkauf zugenommen hat. -

Criterion (iv): Three key periods of European cultural and political development - the Middle Ages, the Baroque period, and the Gründerzeit - are exceptionally well illustrated by the urban and architectural heritage of the Historic Centre of Vienna. Criterion (vi): Since the 16th century Vienna has been universally acknowledged to be the musical capital of Europe. While taking note of the efforts already made for the protection of the historic town of Vienna, the Committee recommended that the State Party undertake the necessary measures to review the height and volume of the proposed new development near the Stadtpark, east of the Ringstrasse, so as not to impair the visual integrity of the historic town. Furthermore, the Committee recommended that special attention be given to continuous monitoring and control of any changes to the morphology of the historic building stock. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS Vienna developed from early Celtic and Roman settlements into a Medieval and Baroque city, the capital of the Austro- Hungarian Empire. It played an essential role as a leading European music centre, from the great age of Viennese Classicism through the early part of the 20th century.
