Weissburgunder 2012 WEISSBURGUNDER 2012 Wine-description: The Weissburgunder impresses by virtue of exotic fruit aromas such as mango and papaya, through a nutty finish and general harmony. The extract-rich body and a finely integrated under- lying acidity lend this Pinot blanc elegance and depth. On the variety and origins of this wine: From its original home in the vineyards of Champagne and Burgundy, the Weißburgunder (Pinot blanc) grape made its way to Austria, where it is offered ideal conditions by the Klosterneuburg Monastery Wine Estate’s vineyards in Kahlenbergerdorf. Surrounded by the slopes of the Nußberg, the Kahlenberg and the Leopoldsberg and bordered on the east by the Danube, these vineyards produce superior quality year after year. Wine Estate of Klosterneuburg Monastery: Since its foundation in 1114 Klosterneuburg monastery has been growing wine and therefore is the oldest wine estate of Austria. With 108 Hectares of vineyards it is one of the country‘s largest and most renowned estates. The vineyards are situated in selected top locations in Klosterneuburg, Vienna, Gumpoldskirchen and Tattendorf. Since the year 2009 it is the first carbon neutral wine estate in Europe. Michael J. Zeps S.J. Marquette University, [email protected] Preface While doing research in Vienna for my dissertation on relations between Church and State in Austria between the wars I became intrigued by the outward appearance of the public housing projects put up by Red Vienna at the same time. They seemed to have a martial cast to them not at all restricted to the famous Karl-Marx-Hof so, against advice that I would find nothing, I decided to see what could be found in the archives of the Stadtbauamt to tie the architecture of the program to the civil war of 1934 when the structures became the principal focus of conflict. I found no direct tie anywhere in the documents but uncovered some circumstantial evidence that might be explored in the future. One reason for publishing these notes is to save researchers from the same dead end I ran into. This is not to say no evidence was ever present because there are many missing documents in the sequence which might turn up in the future—there is more than one complaint to be found about staff members taking documents and not returning them—and the socialists who controlled the records had an interest in denying any connection both before and after the civil war. Certain kinds of records are simply not there including assessments of personnel which are in the files of the Magistratsdirektion not accessible to the public and minutes of most meetings within the various Magistrats Abteilungen connected with the program.

Criterion (iv): Three key periods of European cultural and political development - the Middle Ages, the Baroque period, and the Gründerzeit - are exceptionally well illustrated by the urban and architectural heritage of the Historic Centre of Vienna. Criterion (vi): Since the 16th century Vienna has been universally acknowledged to be the musical capital of Europe. While taking note of the efforts already made for the protection of the historic town of Vienna, the Committee recommended that the State Party undertake the necessary measures to review the height and volume of the proposed new development near the Stadtpark, east of the Ringstrasse, so as not to impair the visual integrity of the historic town. Furthermore, the Committee recommended that special attention be given to continuous monitoring and control of any changes to the morphology of the historic building stock. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS Vienna developed from early Celtic and Roman settlements into a Medieval and Baroque city, the capital of the Austro- Hungarian Empire. It played an essential role as a leading European music centre, from the great age of Viennese Classicism through the early part of the 20th century.

Im Lauf der Gebirgsbildung der Alpen wurde der Flysch hochgepresst und von den gegen Nor- den gleitenden Kalkalpen zumindest 60 km bis in seine heutige Position geschoben. 2000 Years of Town Planning in Vienna Wolfgang Borner Geschäftsgruppe Kultur - Stadtarchäologie Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz 5/1 1080 Vienna, Austria E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Around 2000years ago, Roman legionnaires planned and built their militaiy fortress upon today's city terrain according to a customary and trustworthy scheme. Due to the arrival of natives and Roman citizens, further settlements, which were constructed more or less systematically, came to exist in the whereabouts of this legionnaire fortress. On these Roman walls and on some sparse remnants from the early middle ages, the cosmopolitan city of Vienna was erected. In cooperation with the Board for City Planning, strategies were dei'eloped to conserve the historical assets of this city for the coming generations. For this reason, a Land Registration Project for Cultural Assets, which is part of a Protective Zone Project, was elaborated for the City of Vienna. This land register has been available in the Internet since Autumn 2000 (http:// service.wien.gv. at/kulturkat/). In addition to buildings worth conserving and pin-pointed protective zones, all known archeological sites of the city have been included in this GIS-application of the municipal authority. This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract Alluvial rivers can show unpredictable channel changes and humans living along the river corridor repeatedly have to cope with the alterations of their physical environment. This was specifically the case in the mid-sixteenth century, when the Viennese were confronted with one major problem: the Danube River successively abandoned its main arm that ran close to the city and shifted further north. This was at the time when Vienna became the permanent residence of the Holy Roman Empire (except from 1583 to 1611 when it was moved to Prague), due to the Habsburgs holding the crown. Vienna was also the capital of the so-called Danube Monarchy, which came into being in the early sixteenth century. The city assumed increasing significance, being home to and hosting important authorities and persons. In particular after the first siege by the Ottoman army in 1529, the resource need for a complex fortification system was extremely high. This paper aims to highlight: (1) the morphological Danube dynamics together with floods and extreme weather situations in the sixteenth century; (2) the main actors in the trans- formation of the Danube; (3) changes of the river’s course from 1550 to 1600/1650 and the consequences for bridging the river and the infrastructure as a whole; (4) the massive engineering measures that were undertaken in order to secure Vienna’s requirements in the sixteenth century; (5) the question of floodplain settlements, and (6) the contested use of resources on the Viennese Danube floodplain.
