    The Mysterious World of Celtic Coins Coins were developed about 650 BC on the western coast of modern Turkey. From there, they quickly spread to the east and the west, and toward the end of the 5th century BC coins reached the Celtic tribes living in central Europe. Initially these tribes did not have much use for the new medium of exchange. They lived self-sufficient and produced everything needed for living themselves. The few things not producible on their homesteads were bartered with itinerant traders. The employ of money, especially of small change, is related to urban culture, where most of the inhabitants earn their living through trade or services. Only people not cultivating their own crop, grapes or flax, but buying bread at the bakery, wine at the tavern and garments at the dressmaker do need money. Because by means of money, work can directly be converted into goods or services. The Celts in central Europe presumably began using money in the course of the 4th century BC, and sometime during the 3rd century BC they started to mint their own coins. In the beginning the Celtic coins were mere imitations of Greek, later also of Roman coins. Soon, however, the Celts started to redesign the original motifs. CONSIDERAŢII ASUPRA RELAŢIILOR POLITICE CU CNAEUS POMPEIUS Radu OTA* Una dintre problemele foarte interesante ale domniei lui Burebista este legată de relaţiile politico-diplomatice avute cu Republica romană. Acest aspect al domniei ne-a trezit interesul pentru că evenimentele respective au fost interpretate destul de unitar, mai ales de istoriografia de dinainte de 1989, cu mici excepţii. Numeroşi istorici care s-au ocupat de această perioadă au încercat să supradimensioneze personalitatea regelui în context european. De-a lungul timpului s-a încercat discutarea unor aspecte privind originea regelui, modul în care a realizat cuceririle, tipul de stat creat (dacă putem vorbi despre un stat în adevăratul sens al cuvântului), capitala sau centrul de reşedinţă al regelui, durata domniei, existenţa unor instituţii şi, nu în ultimul rând, întinderea regatului său pe care unii l-au numit „imperiu”1. Am constatat că nu s-a ajuns la un consens în ceea ce priveşte toate aceste probleme ridicate de domnia lui Burebista. Am ales să reanalizăm tratativele regelui get din poziţii uşor diferite faţă de ceea ce s-a scris până acum, în scopul de a încerca un nou tip de abordare a istoriei politice a dinaştilor daci. De asemenea, vom expune şi analiza toate teoriile emise de-a lungul timpului cu privire la acest subiect pentru a ne face o imagine cât mai clară asupra acestor evenimente văzute prin ochii specialiştilor. Pentru început vom prezenta şi analiza pe scurt realităţile politice petrecute între anii 89-50 a. Chr. legate de politicile expansioniste ale Romei, dar şi ale lui Burebista, iar apoi vom trece la subiectul care ne interesează.

Kossiakoff: The Art of War: TheCOMMENT Protection of Cultural Property during the "S THE ART OF WAR: THE PROTECTION OF CULTURAL PROPERTY DURING THE "SIEGE" OF SARAJEVO (1992-95) I. INTRODUCTION Throughout the night of August 25, 1992, shells from Serb gunners fell on the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo. The attack set off a blaze fueled by a collection representing hundreds of years of Bosnian history and culture. Librarians and community members, risking sniper fire, formed a human chain to move books to safety.' Despite emergency efforts, ninety percent of the collection was ash by daybreak.2 Unfortunately, this incident was not unique. The destruction of cultural artifacts during the "Siege" of Sarajevo was a loss not only to Bosnia,3 but also to the heritage of the world which now suffers a gap that cannot be closed.
