Buenos Aires, 2010 “Selección de alimento y hábitat en vicuñas silvestres de la Reserva Provincial Los Andes (Salta, Argentina)” Resumen Esta tesis analiza la selección de alimento y hábitat por la vicuña (Vicugna vicugna, Molina 1782) en el marco de la teoría de forrajeo óptimo. Esta predice que los individuos reducirán su amplitud dietaria en la época de mayor disponibilidad de recursos, y expandirán su dieta durante la estación desfavorable por la disminución en la disponibilidad de los items de alta calidad. En relación al hábitat, predice que los animales seleccionarán aquellos parches que presenten mayor abundancia de items alimentarios nutritivos. Sin embargo, la estructura social puede afectar fuertemente esta estrategia de selección. El objetivo de esta tesis fue identificar los patrones de selección de alimento y hábitat por vicuñas durante las épocas de máxima y mínima disponibilidad de recursos, e interpretar dichos patrones bajo el marco conceptual mencionado. La selección de ambos recursos estuvo condicionada por variables ambientales (época del año y disponibilidad de alimento), y por la marcada estructura social característica de esta especie. La disponibilidad vegetal varió entre estaciones y entre años, lo que influyó sobre la selección de los items alimentarios y en consecuencia sobre la selección de microhábitats. Estas variaciones en la selección fueron detectadas tanto en las vicuñas territoriales como en las que carecen de territorio. Palabras claves: Camélidos, teoría de forrajeo óptimo, dieta, estructura social, comportamiento, zonas áridas. ii “Food and habitat selection in wild vicuña in Los Andes Provincial Reserve (Salta, Argentina)” Abstract This thesis examines food and habitat selection by vicuñas (Vicugna vicugna, Molina 1782) within the framework of the optimal foraging theory. This theory predicts that individuals will narrow their dietary range in the season of highest resource availability and expand their diet during the unfavourable season due to decline in availability of high-quality items. With regard to habitat, it predicts that animals will select those patches exhibiting greater abundance of nutritional food items. However, social structure can strongly affect this selection strategy. The goal of this thesis was to identify food and habitat selection patterns of vicuñas during seasons of maximum and minimum resource availability, and interpret such patterns within the above conceptual framework. The selection of both resources was restricted by environmental variables (season of the year and food availability), and by the pronounced social structure typical of this species. Plant availability varied between seasons and between years, which influenced selection of dietary items and, accordingly, microhabitat selection. These variations in selection were detected for both territorial and non-territorial vicuñas. Additionally, a key to identification of the species of Agastopsylla and a distribution map of the species of the genus are included. MATTONI,2 AND LORENZO PRENDINI3 ABSTRACT We review the taxonomy of the Brachistosternus Pocock, 1893 scorpions of Chile, providing revised diagnoses, comprehensive distribution maps (based on all known locality records), and an illustrated key to all Chilean species of the genus. Two new species, Brachistosternus (Leptosternus) chango, n.sp., and Brachistosternus (Leptosternus) kamanchaca, n.sp., are described from northern Chile. The phylogenetic affinities of B. chango are unclear. Some characters suggest that this species may be related to Brachistosternus (L.) artigasi Cekalovic, 1974 but others suggest that it may be related to Brachistosternus (L.) roigalsinai Ojanguren Affilastro, 2002. Brachistosternus kamanchaca, in contrast, appears to be closely related to Brachistosternus (L.) donosoi Cekalovic, 1974 and other species from the plains of northern Chile and southern Peru´. RESUMEN Se revisa la taxonomı´a de los escorpiones del ge´nero Brachistosternus Pocock, 1893 de Chile, se brindan diagnosis revisadas, mapas de distribucio´n completos (basados en todos los registros conocidos) y una clave ilustrada de todas las especies. RESUMEN Myotis atacamensis presenta poblaciones severamente fragmentadas a lo largo de la costa de Perú y Chile. Actualmente se encuentra considerada como especie amenazada por la IUCN, debido a la fragmentación de su hábitat. En el presente trabajo reportamos el primer registro de esta especie utilizando registros de sus llamadas de ecolocación a una altitud superior a 3.000 msnm, incrementando su distribución en más de 1.000 metros de altitud. Its range includes the northern Andean mountains in Chile, where their relationship with Aymara peasants is conflictive because of crop raiding. The aim of this study is to understand the nature of this conflict in Chile, and identify socio-ecological features that may explain it. Data of different sampling dates from 2003 to 2011 of night transects on roads, crop examination, interviews and direct sighting of tarukas were used to understand its ecology and relationship with local peasants. Peasants interviewed (n=47) cultivated mainly corn (85.1%) and alfalfa (74.5%) in small farms and 83% of them raise livestock. The conflict is widespread in Parinacota Province, where tarukas effectively consume crops, mainly abandoned alfalfa at night. The occurrence of crop raiding is not positively correlated with dry season as expected. However crop consumption is low (10.3% average of damaged plants in crop plots).

Based on ethnographic fieldwork with guallatireños in this Andean locality, I focus on how both the history of border institutionalization and the creation of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve impacted ethnicity processes and indigenous ownership in the highlands. I examine the politics of indigeneity as a mobile social formation and transnational field of governance, subjectivities and knowledges, along with notions of heritage shaped by the materiality of property. While struggling for cultural recognition and economic redistribution, guallatireños have been confronted with a neoliberal state apparatus and violent mechanisms of government, including contradictory legislation which consequently has fragmented traditional native territories and communities, privatized land and water rights, and ultimately invisibilized Indigenous Peoples. However, the free market model has also shaped contested terrains between public and private sectors in the Lauca, paradoxically weakening the role of the state and causing friction among the various stakeholders involved in the Biosphere Reserve. By studying a series of state-driven ‘participatory meetings’ for indigenous and touristic development, I conclude that participatory governance in the Lauca territory has challenged democratic practices and created spaces for indigenous recognition and political representation.

To introduce new crops sensitive to boron in the Lluta valley (irrigated with remediated water) VALLEYS IN ARICA PROVINCE The valleys of Arica Parinacota Province in Northern Chile present outstanding climatic conditions that allows crop production all year long, the province is the supplier of fresh vegetables for both central and southern Chile during winter, placing Arica´s valleys as one of the key factors in food security, specially Azapa valley which has excellent water quality producing 3,2% of the national total for horticulture. A symposium was held for the two South American deer of the genus Hippocamelus: the taruka, H. antisensis and the Patagonian huemul, H. bisulcus. The taruka is recognized as vulnerable and the huemul as endangered on the IUCN red list. To reverse the current trend and prevent further imminent declines, 13 recommendations were proposed.
