We review the taxonomy of the flea genus Agastopsylla including the re-description of two 92 (1) species and one subspecies, and designate neotype and neallotype for Agastopsylla 92(1) hirsutior, neotype for Agastopsylla nylota nylota from the “Colección Mamíferos Lillo Anexos” (CMLA), Universidad Nacional de Tucumán, Argentina, and neotype and neallotype for Agastopsylla pearsoni from the Natural History Museum (London, U.K.). Additionally, a key to identification of the species of Agastopsylla and a distribution map of the species of the genus are included. OJANGUREN AFFILASTRO,1 CAMILO I. MATTONI,2 AND LORENZO PRENDINI3 ABSTRACT We review the taxonomy of the Brachistosternus Pocock, 1893 scorpions of Chile, providing revised diagnoses, comprehensive distribution maps (based on all known locality records), and an illustrated key to all Chilean species of the genus. Two new species, Brachistosternus (Leptosternus) chango, n.sp., and Brachistosternus (Leptosternus) kamanchaca, n.sp., are described from northern Chile. The phylogenetic affinities of B. chango are unclear. Some characters suggest that this species may be related to Brachistosternus (L.) artigasi Cekalovic, 1974 but others suggest that it may be related to Brachistosternus (L.) roigalsinai Ojanguren Affilastro, 2002. Brachistosternus kamanchaca, in contrast, appears to be closely related to Brachistosternus (L.) donosoi Cekalovic, 1974 and other species from the plains of northern Chile and southern Peru´. RESUMEN Se revisa la taxonomı´a de los escorpiones del ge´nero Brachistosternus Pocock, 1893 de Chile, se brindan diagnosis revisadas, mapas de distribucio´n completos (basados en todos los registros conocidos) y una clave ilustrada de todas las especies. Se describe a Brachistosternus (Leptosternus) chango, n.sp., y a Brachistosternus (Leptosternus) kamanchaca, n.sp., del norte de Chile. Las relaciones filogene´ticas de B. chango son poco claras. Algunos caracteres de esta especie sugieren que puede estar relacionada con Brachistosternus (L.) artigasi Cekalovic, 1974, aunque otros parecerı´an relacionarla con Brachistosternus (L.) roigalsinai Ojanguren Affilastro, 2002. -

Geographical Distribution of Tillandsia Lomas in the Atacama Desert, Northern Chile

Marquetb,Ã aDalmacia 3251, Iquique, Chile bCenter for Advanced Studies in Ecology and Biodiversity (CASEB) and Departamento de Ecologı´a, Pontificia Universidad Cato´lica de Chile, Casilla 114-D, Santiago, Chile Abstract We assessed the geographic distribution of Tillandsia lomas in northern Chile, from Arica (181200S) to the Loa river (211250S) and discussed the factors that might potentially underlie the observed patterns. We carried out extensive field survey complemented with aerial surveys and analysis of specimens deposited in herbaria. We detected over 30 Tillandsia stands most of which corresponded to the species Tillandsia landbeckii and can be grouped in 10 large systems. Other two species were also detected Tillandsia marconae and Tillandsia virescens, both of which show a restricted distribution in the area. Our results provide evidence on the wide distribution of Tillandsia lomas in northern Chile and its association with fog corridors. Introduction The Atacama/Peruvian Coastal Desert, extends for more than 3000 km along a narrow coastal strip from northern Peru (Lat. 51S) to northern Chile (Lat. 271S) on the west coast of South America. This desert owes its existence to the combined effect of a stable high- pressure system located in the western Pacific Ocean, the drying effect of the cold northward flowing Humboldt current, and to the rain shadow effect of the Andes, which hold back the penetration of moisture brought by the eastern trade winds.
