Tai pašā laikā jauns izdevums ļauj radīt jaunas robežas, akcentus kādai jau esošai vai vismaz topošai tradīcijai, tādējādi radot pārliecību, ka savs autors un daļēji arī adresāts tai jau Via Latgalica: humanitāro zinātņu žurnāls, 1 (2008). This volume have been anonymously submitted at least to one reviewer.

  • Latvia Name Day Calendar
Name Day Calendar “He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.” JOHN 10:3B-4 Name Day Celebration Latvian Style Latvia is one of the few countries in Europe that has the tradition of celebrating Name Days. This unique tradition began as part of the early Christian Church calendar to commemorate the saints and angels. The practice then moved to celebrating the people who were named after a saint. Eventually, other names were added to the calendar to celebrate all people’s names. There are one to five names assigned to each day of the year. The dates and names can’t be interchanged. During Leap Year, February 29 is an open date to celebrate names that are not included in the calendar. Another date reserved as an open date to celebrate names not on the calendar annually is May 22. Name Day is a large part of the culture in Latvia! All the calendars, diaries, and notebooks have the Names printed with the corresponding date. Radio Stations at the beginning of the morning news, broadcast whose name is being celebrated that day. The larger newspapers print the names next to their date of issue for that particular day. It’s like a birthday, but in some ways even better. Your name is mentioned everywhere, even your cell phone providers send you a text greeting. On your Name Day you receive flowers (a standard gift of celebration in Latvia) students and adults alike bring sweets or chocolates to recognize and celebrate.

  • St Peter and St Paul's Cathedral in Tallinn
St Peter and St Paul’s Cathedral in Tallinn The History of Catholicism in Tallinn If you ask a passer-by in Tallinn where the Roman Catholic cathedral of St Peter and St Paul is, the chances are that you may not get an answer. Many people who live in Tallinn do not know that there is a Catholic church in Tallinn and likewise many Estonians do not know that there are Catholics in Estonia. Catholicism seems to belong to the distant past, to the romantic Middle Ages: after all, Lutheranism has been the dominant religion in Estonia for centuries! However, Catholicism has a centuries-long history in Estonia and it is alive and well today. Catholicism was prevalent in North Estonia, from 1227 to 1561, and in South Estonia even longer, from 1227 to 1626, until that territory also fell under Swedish rule. All surviving medieval chapels and churches in Estonia were once Catholic places of worship. The recorded history of Catholicism in Tallinn goes back to the year 1219, when the Danish King Valdemar II arrived in Tallinn with a large army and established a stronghold for subjugating North Estonia. He was accompanied by Andreas Sunesen, the Archbishop of Lund, the Estonian bishop Theoderich and other two bishops, together with a number of priests, who were to Christianise the people to be subdued. Immediately, the construction of a church began at Toompea, which preceded the present Dome Church. In 1229 monks belonging to the Dominican Order arrived in Tallinn from Denmark who founded their monastery at Toompea. Soon after the brothers were forced to leave, but they were able to return to Toompea in 1246, and they resumed their activities in 1260’s in the place where today the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul is located.
