Under the so called Perak Amanjaya Development Plan, some of the things that we have tried to do are the same things that I believe many others here are concerned about: first, balanced development and economic distribution between the urban and rural areas by focusing on developing small towns; second, poverty eradication regardless of race or religion so that no one remains on the fringes of society or is left behind economically; and, third, youth empowerment. Under the first one, the state identifies viable small- and medium-size companies which can operate from small towns. These companies are to be working closely with the state government to boost the economy of the respective areas.

The old shop houses testify in the uniqueness and diversity of the nation’s architectural gems, which were shaped by the Malay, Chinese and British entities. The current study attempts to understand the influence of varying entities towards the architectural identities that the old shop houses’ facade bear. Purposive sampling of 16 towns in the state of Perak was made to gauge information on the earliest row of shop houses at each of the towns. Both secondary and primary data were then leveraged based on documents analysis, interviews and measured drawings to explore the relationship link between the entities and identities through the old shop houses’ facade design. The findings suggest that there is a relationship between the entities and identities, in the sense that the early entities were influential in determining the identities of the old shop houses’ facade design. Interestingly, the Malay style was found to be the most dominant identity depicted by the facade design of the old shophouses from the 16 towns of Perak.     Sains Malaysiana 45(10)(2016): 1487–1495 Environmental Influences on Fish Assemblages of the Upper Sungai Pelus, Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Malaysia (Pengaruh Alam Sekitar ke atas Kumpulan Ikan dari Hulu Sungai Pelus, Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Malaysia) MAT ESA MOHD IKHWANUDDIN, MOHAMMAD NOOR AZMAI AMAL*, SHAMARINA SHOHAIMI HASRUL HAZMAN HASAN & NOR ROHAIZAH JAMIL ABSTRACT This study evaluates the current environmental influences on fish assemblages of the upper Sungai Pelus, Kuala Kangsar, Perak. Fish samplings and habitat characterizations were conducted at three significant different months, which were on dry (June 2014), wet (August 2014) and moderately wet seasons (April 2015). A total of 510 individual fish were collected from the study, which consist of four orders, nine families, 20 genus and 21 species of fishes. Cyprinidae was the biggest family, followed by Bagridae, Balitoridae and Sisoridae. Neolissochilus hexagonolepis was the only species documented under the nearly threatened list, even their individual number and occurrences were the highest recorded. The readings of environmental variables, such as water temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, biological oxygen demand and total suspended solids were regarded as normal for upper river area. However, the water turbidity and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were quite high, which we believed was due to seasonal variation and current anthropogenic activities of the nearby river area. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that the water conductivity, river width, COD and water velocity were the main factors in influencing the fish assemblages of this upper Sungai Pelus. The findings can be utilized as a guideline to manage, protect and conserve this upper river area in the near future.

    Majlis Masyarakat Sivil (MMS) Berama Pertubuhan Badan Bukan Kerajaan (NGO) di bawah Jawatankuasa Local Agenda 21 di seluruh PBT negeri Perak telah mula diperkenalkan penubuhannya pada tahun 2010 dengan persetujuan Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri (MMK) bil 1637 bertarikh 13.10.2010 MMS ini diletakkan di bawah Jawatankuasa Local Agenda 21 dengan bertujuan memperkasakan pelaksanaan program-program di bawah Local Agenda 21 di semua PBT negeri Perak. Disamping itu, penubuhan MMS ini juga berperanan untuk mengeratkan lagi hubungan di antara kerajaan dan orang awam termasuk NGO dalam menambahbaik mutu perkhidmatan yang ditawarkan kepada rakyat. MMS tidak mempunyai kuasa eksekutif sebaliknya menyokong serta membantu jawatankuasa utama yang lain dari segi sumbangan idea dan pandangan. 1. Memberikan pandangan dan input kepada PBT dalam kepakaran dan bidang masing-masing ke arah meningkatkan mutu penyampaian perkhidmatan PBT. 2. According to the Malaysian Department of Statistics, the mining sector continues to be significant, supplying basic raw materials to the construction and manufacturing sectors enabling Malaysia's economic growth. Until the late 1970s, Malaysia was the world's premier producer of tin, supplying some 40 per cent of the world's tin. Peninsular Malaysia contributes the highest percentage of tin mining production and the biggest mining area is situated in Perak, comprising Taiping of Larut district, Kinta Valley district (Ipoh, Gopeng, Kampar, Batu Gajah, Tronoh), Pahang and Selangor, which includes the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. However, due to a global recession in 1929 to 1932 a severe decline occurred in this industry. This decline affected the price of tin that fell sharply due to a lack of demand from European markets and caused the closure of many tin mines. In 2011, the Malaysian Chambers of Mines indicated that in Peninsular Malaysia, there is more than 113,700 ha of ex-tin mining areas and the majority of these areas are former tin mining sites. With the current rapid development and modernization of Perak state, the insistence on the human needs has caused changes to its moribund tin mining landscapes.
