DESCRIPTION OF THE DATA FILE Organization of the File This document describes the contents of the data file of the 2% sample of the 1970 Population Census of Peninsular Malaysia. The data are based on information gathered from three census forms or questionnaires of the 1970 Population Census: 1.Control Form: Schedule for each Enumeration Block. 2.Form 4: Household Schedule (see Appendix A.1). 3.Form 5: Person Schedule (see Appendix A.2). This data file is made up of 3 record types: 1.Record Type 1 which contains Identification and Household Variables. 2.Record Type 2 which contains Person Variables for individuals below 10 years of age. 3.Record Type 3 which contains Person Variables for individuals above 10 years of age. The data file is structured such that records of individuals (Record Types 2 and 3) are nested within households, i.e., following each Household Record (Record Type 1) there will be 1 or more record(s) of individuals (Record Type 2 or 3) within that household. Households in the same Enumeration Block (defined by geographic boundaries) are arranged next to each other in the data file. The file does not contain an "Enumeration Block Record" which gives information about the number of households in that block nor an Enumeration Block variable which identifies the Block number to which the living quarter belongs. Definitions of Households and Families: 1.Household: A household is defined in the Malaysian census as a group of persons who live together (in a single living quarters) and make common provision for food and other essentials of living. It is possible for two or more households to inhabit the same living quarters. Because this 2% sample excludes all households which use the census self-enumeration (short) form, most of the institutional population is excluded. This sample, therefore, contains information on the private household population of Peninsular Malaysia (but a few institutions seem to be included). 5

2.Primary and Secondary Family Units: Families are subsets of households and include persons who live together and are related by blood, marriage, or adoption. In the census, families are divided into primary family units and secondary family units. The primary family is identified as the family whose head is also the household head. If, in addition to this primary family, there is a married couple with or without children, or another married person, with spouse absent, but with an unmarried child (children) present in the same household, they are classified as secondary families. There can only be one primary family per household, but there may be several secondary families. 6

Each district code is therefore unique only within its state. To locate a particular district, one has to use both the state code and the district code. For example, to locate district in Johore, one has to use state code 01 and district code 01. For full listing of administrative districts see Appendix B.1. There are 70 Administrative Districts in Peninsular Malaysia, and they range in population from 15,852 to 875,772. 3 DAERAH/MUKIM 5-6 Codes for Daerah/Mukim (smaller administrative areas below the level of Adminstrative Districts) are two digit codes beginning with 01, numbered sequentially 10

Variable Codes of Variables for Record Type 1: Number Household Record Column ______within each Administrative District. Note: For each state except Kelantan, this variable refers to Mukim, an administrative sub-division of a district. In Kelantan, the variable refers to Daerah, an administrative subunit that is intermediate between a district (which is called Jajahan in Kelantan) and a Mukim.

A large urban place is a gazetted area with 10,000 to 74,999 persons. A small urban place is a gazetted area with 1,000 to 9,999 persons. The rest of the country is classified as rural - this includes nongazetted areas and gazetted areas with populations below 1,000.

5 RECORD TYPE 8 This variable identifies the type of record. 4 indicates a household record. Code 4 on column 8 of a record does not necessarily mean that this is Record Type 1 because column 8 of record Type 2 may also have a code 4 (referring to a person number in a household). Therefore, to identify Record Type 1, column 8 has code 4 and column 9 is not equal to code 5 (column 9 on a household record is the last column of the local authority code and will never equal 5. On a person record column 9 will always equal 5). 11

Variable Codes of Variables for Record Type 1: Number Household Record Column ______6 LOCAL AUTHORITY 9-10 This is a two-digit classification of city and town codes which are unique within each Administrative District. For full listing, see Appendix B.2. To identify a particular local authority, the local authority code and the corresponding state and district codes are needed. Local authorities refer to the gazetted places which have some local government unit.
