ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE CENTER FOR FAMILIES DURING DR. MACDERMID'S TERM AS DIRECTOR

The work of the Center for Families proceeds as a result of efforts by many individuals, making it impossible to judge any one person as fully responsible for particular accomplishments of the Center. . Center efforts are directed toward educators, human service professionals, employers, and policymakers. Major initiatives have included: Shrinking the Gaps Between Research, Practice, and Policy Each of the initiatives outlined below focuses on bringing cutting-edge research to the attention of professionals whose decisions affect families.

MacDermid Wadsworth Page 52

 The Indiana Family Impact Seminar series delivers state-of-the-science briefings to state legislators. continues. A total of 21 seminars have been delivered, in partnership with the Indiana Consortium of Family Organizations, and a bipartisan bicameral advisory committee of legislators, both coordinated by the Center for Families.  The Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award for Excellence in Research on Work and Family, launched in 1999, disseminates the ‘best of the best’ research to corporate practitioners who oversee policies, programs and practices that affect millions of employees around the world. The annual review panel comprises scholars from around the world and corporate practitioners. No nominations are accepted; reviewers examine every article published in more than 75 journals. The competition also is the impetus for the annual Kanter Lecture at Purdue, which brings together students and faculty from Human Development and Family Studies, Psychological Sciences, Sociology, and Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management.  The Award for Excellence in Research on Military and Veteran Families, launched in 2015, targets policymakers and practitioners who work with military and veteran families. This effort is supported by the Association of the United States Army, the Armed Forces Services Corporation, and Military REACH, who work to disseminate the research to advocacy organizations, military families, and military and civilian practitioners. Promoting Rigorous Use of Data by Community Organizations  Measuring Communities is a social indicators project aimed at assisting communities throughout the country in focusing their efforts on behalf of military and veteran families. Consisting of a robust web portal with a variety of data elements, extensive mapping capabilities, and a wide array of user tools, the portal is available to organizations for application with their on-the-ground staff. It is being extensively used by the National Guard around the country, with training by MFRI. Organizations in every state are using it. We are the first organization to successfully obtain demographic information by county about service members and their families for posting to the portal. A key partner in this effort is the Purdue Center for Regional Development.  With the Cooperative Extension Service and the Business Research Center at Indiana University, the Center publishes the series The Status of Indiana Families Today, a reference volume of demographic information. The theme of the 1999 edition is “Living Poor in Indiana.” Convening Community Organizations  Battlemind to Home Symposium VI Since 2009, MFRI has collaborated with Roudebush VA Medical Center and several partnering agencies, including the Department of Labor, VA Center for Community and Faith-Based Initiatives, and the Indiana National Guard, to offer this annual conference for community providers, policymakers and advocates throughout Indiana. Battlemind to Home educates attendees on the unique challenges veterans and their families face during the process of reintegration. In 2016, participants from over 30 counties attended, with completely full registration.  Since 2010, Stand Downs that engaged and educated more than 2,000 service providers throughout Indiana. Stand Downs addressed basic needs such as food, clothing, medical, dental, housing, and employment assistance for at-risk military and veteran families. They gave hands-on training to more than 130 college students The Points of Light Foundation is using the toolkit MFRI wrote for the Stand Downs it supports, and to train others across the nation in how to create collaborative, community-based Stand Downs.  At the invitation of the Indiana National Guard, MFRI co-leads Joining Community Forces Indiana (JCFI) along with the Guard and the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs. Indiana is unique among the states in having its leading veteran and military organizations working with the land grant university in this way. JCFI works to coordinate military- and veteran-oriented support activities around the state. Program Development  Star Behavioral Health Providers (SBHP), which prepares community-based behavioral health providers to serve military and veteran families, has now been launched in 9 states. SBHP has been recognized with awards from the Washington Center and the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities. MFRI was also selected to receive the Laura A. Wheeler award by the Behavioral Health Officers of the Army National Guard.

 Reaching Rural Veterans, funded by the Veterans Administration, was a collaboration with Purdue Extension and Heather Eicher-Miller in the Department of Nutrition Science. The program completed a successful pilot test in Indiana and Kentucky in 2016. Over 1,000 at-risk veterans were reached, compared to a goal of 300, and 75% of whom reported household incomes less than $25,000 per year. Food security and connections to services significantly improved over the course of the program.  The Focus Forward Fellowship program was designed specifically for women student veterans pursuing degrees at 4-year institutions of higher learning or master’s programs. It is an enrichment program aimed at reducing isolation and increasing academic success among this population. It includes a residential component and online learning community, and attracts women student veterans from across the country. Program Evaluation  Project EASe was a collaboration with the United Way of Greater Lafayette and United Way Agencies. HDFS graduate students completed reviews and reports to assist local agencies in strengthening their assessments of program outcomes. . Grant revenues have multiplied exponentially during my term as director, led by grants awarded to support the work of the Military Family Research Institute, an initiative of the Center for Families. . A faculty partners program was created, which now includes faculty from across the Purdue campus. . Gifts by donors supported the creation of fellowship programs for both faculty and graduate students. A policy internship for graduate students and a faculty partners program have also been developed with support from a new endowment fund Policy interns have received national recognition for their work. . Over $500,000 has been awarded to support research and engagement activities by faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students. . The Center for Families has been the invited academic partner for national research conferences on work and family sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Business and Professional Women’s Foundation, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Competitive funding has been received from the National Institutes of Health to support a conference series focused on Families and Health. . For the Greater Good, a monograph of the Center was published in 1998. Conceptualized and initiated under founding director Susan Kontos, this publication describes the contributions of the School of Consumer and Family Sciences to family well-being. . Together with the Boston College Center for Work and Family, the center created the Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award for Excellence in Work-Family Research, an international award. Each year, a panel of 40 or more scholars from around the world reviews every article published in more than 70 journals to identify the best research articles published in a given year. The winner is presented with a cash award, and the nominees are publicized via congratulatory ads in leading academic journals and corporate events. . The fifth anniversary of the founding of the Center was celebrated during the 1998-99 academic year. Shortly thereafter, remodelling was undertaken to create a new suite of rooms to house the Center on the mezzanine level of Fowler House. The tenth anniversary was celebrated during the 2003-2004 academic year.
