Abstract: The prevalence of psychiatric disorders in palliative care is well documented, yet they often remain undetected and untreated, adding further to the burden of suffering on patients who are already facing severe physical and psychosocial problems. This article will focus on depression as it represents one of the most common psychiatric disorders treated by psychiatrists and psychotherapists in palliative care. Although depression in palliative care can be treated successfully with antidepressant medication and psychotherapy, a significant number of depressives do not respond to either medication or existing psychotherapies. This is not surprising considering depression is a complex disorder. Moreover, the presentation of depression in palliative care is compounded by the severity of the underlying medical conditions. It is thus important for clinicians to continue to develop more effective treatments for depression in palliative care. This article describes cognitive hypnotherapy (CH), an evidence-based multimodal treatment for depression which can be applied to a wide range of depressed patients in palliative care. This study aims to investigate the relationship between coping mechanisms, dysfunctional negative emotions, and Internet use. A total of 54 participants aged between 14 and 19 years old completed a questionnaire containing several measures and demographics information. We measured participants’ coping strategies, emotional distress, social and emotional loneliness, and their online behavior and Internet addiction using self-report questionnaires. In order to identify the relation between the investigated variables, we used correlation analysis and regression, and we tested one mediation model. The results showed that maladaptive coping strategies and Internet use were significant predictors of dysfunctional negative emotions. As a standard therapeutic approach, CBT has been widely applied in solving numerous mental- related problems. As will be seeing later in the paper, majority of persons with learning disabilities are the ageing population and this population is on the rise. This implies that that the evidence base of their mental problems requires intensive care, therefore, the world countries ought to ensure that there is a comprehensive range of psychotherapies who would cater for the increasing population of persons suffering with learning disabilities. Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT) is contemporary an accepted and effective method of treating people with learning disabilities, this is evidenced by the reducing numbers of persons suffering from learning disability illnesses. However, as the paper shows, there is an immediate need to support the education practices as well as developments contributing to the emotional requirements of persons with learning disabilities.
