Stanley Andrew Sliwiak, is the son of Joseph. Sliwiak and Anna (Lubienska) Sliwiak. He was born November 2, 1940, in Falejowka, Poland.. His elementary education was obtained in Falejowka, and secondary education at the Queen Bona High School, Sanok, Poland, where he graduated in 1960. In September, 1960, he entered the Major Seminary of Wroclaw and in June 24, 1966, he graduated with a major in Apologetics and was ordained to priesthood. In September, 1967, he entered Pontificia Facultas Theologica Wratislaviae until 1970, and 1975-1977, and in June 16, 1976, he received Licentiatum in Theologia. In October, 1973, he entered Catholic University of Lublin, and in June 4, 1975, he received the Degree of Masters in Educational Psychology. In August, 1977, he came to the United States and he joined the Diocese of Corpus Christi, Texas. In August, 1980, he entered Loyola University of Chicago. Everywhere people appear to possess and to work for things tha~ have value to them. This characteristic is very important because what people value, desire and work for shape a person's style of life and has great impact on the formation of personality. L. Von Bertalanffy (1959) states: A framework of symbolic values, is not a mere plaything for the human animal or luxury of the intelligentsia, it is, the very backbone of society and among many other things, an important psychohygenic factor (p. 73). He goes on to call for establishing of new values, or for reinstating old va,lues. Erich Fromm (1959) sets the roots of values in the very condition of human existence. Our knowledge of these conditions (i.e. of the human situation) leads to establishing values which have objective validity and this validity exists only with regard to the existence of man. Outside man there are no values. Following the reasoning of the L. Von Bertalanffy on the great importance of values for each individual we can find many acceptable arguments to prove it from a philosophical and psychological point of - view. But is it so in the daily life of man? Perhaps it would be better to ask: do people really stand for 1 2 truth, beauty, love, or as A. Maslow calls them, B-values? If people do hold such values, then, why do we frequently find people turning to drugs, alcohol, and serious crime in their frustration? Could it be that these things are values too? It may be said· that people are searching for the best in life and this is especially characteristic among young people. There can be little if any doubt that the youth of today are looking for the best in lj_fe. At this point it is appropriate to question what are youth look­ ing for, what has value to them and what is worthy of their work and sacrifice? What is a value? There are numerous definitions of value and these various definitions point out important factors which underlie our way of approach to the value problem. Bengtson

Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

I show how Nicaraguan performers contend with, mediate, critique, and/or reinforce expectations of gender performance promoted by local and global centers of power. The goal of this project is to provide a better understanding of how coloniality has continued to function with respect to gender performance in very recent years and also to highlight the brave, complex, creative, and astute cultural interventions that are being created by Nicaraguan artists and performers that grapple with oppressive gender systems. I carry out my analysis by reading and engaging intellectually with audio-visual cultural texts from a variety of media including performance art, television programs, short documentaries, low-budget videos, film, and photography produced in the last two decades. Specifically, I analyze the gender performances in the television show International News Network in chapter 1, in recent Nicaraguan film and video productions in chapter 2, in Elyla Sinvergüenza’s performance art in chapter 3, and in annual diversidad sexual events LGBTI Pride and Operación Queer in chapter 4.

Fredrik Norman 850503-7534 [email protected] Abstract This essay focuses on two cases studies that include two game designers’ views of mean- ing-making construction in games and an analysis of their corresponding games. This is placed in relation to the late modern Sweden context. The study examines how the de- signers conceive purposeful play by employing a multi-disciplinary approach consisting of Pruyser’s three-world model, Bell’s ritualization framework, and, Howard’s quest the- ory. Such a study is relevant due to the new ways meaning-making is actively produced within games and contributes to the understanding of meaning-making in late modern Sweden. The two designers work at DICE and Starbreeze Studios and were interviewed using a semi-structured methodology. The data is analyzed with a qualitative narrative technique applying an inductive theoretical lens to analyze the data thematically. Both respondents illustrate patterns of meaning-making in their construction of games where functionality is central and vital to produce purposeful play. The construction of illusion- istic game worlds encloses on feelings of authenticity to the world’s structure. Realistic, autistic, and, object symbolism operate to mold the world structure and are connected to the designers’ genre. The designer from DICE promotes realistic worlds and the designer from Starbreeze Studios autistic representations.

    119 VOL. 3, NO. 1, JUNE 2018: 119-138 https://doi.org/10.22679/avs.2018.3.1.119 RESEARCH ON THE DRAGON IMAGE IN TURKISH MINIATURE PAINTINGS By KYONG-MI KIM* The dragon of the East was an object of worship and an authority to make rain, unlike the West. The dragon image, one of the positively accepted Chinese motifs with the blue-and-white porcelain of the Ming dynasty by the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century, was combined with gigantic saw-edged leaves to create a genre in Saz style. By combining Eastern dragons with plant motifs instead of clouds, dragons were no longer accepted as authority and nobility but as symbols of life and longevity. Unlike Iran and other countries, the image of dragons in Turkish miniature paintings has evolved into a unique style using Turkish calligraphy. The stylistic feature is that a thick black line that gives the impression of calligraphy forms the dragon’s back or a huge saz leaf stalk and forms the axis of the screen. Most of the work was black ink drawing, not painting, and partly lightly painted. In the development stage, the dragon appears as a protagonist on the screen of the early works, but the dragon retreats to the latter half and the saz leaves play a leading role on the screen. A common feature in all paintings, whether early or late, is that they have a militant character and create tension on the screen.
