    Chronotopes and Social Types in South Korean Digital Gaming Stephen C. Rea, University of California, Irvine ABSTRACT This article examines a South Korean cultural chronotope from the perspective of Korea’s world-renowned digital gaming culture, including its professional electronic sports (e- sports) scene and the experiences of amateur gamers in online gaming cafés (PC bang). My analysis centers on two of Korean digital gaming culture’s recognizable social types and the spatiotemporal qualities of their play: professional gamers and the quickness em- bodied in their e-sports performances; and a specific kind of amateur PC bang gamer who is more socially isolated and whose engagement with games is slow and repetitive. I argue that through their performances in digital games’ virtual and actual-world participation frameworks, gamers orient to these social types in ways that differentially construe their relationships to semiotic depictions of places, times, and personhoods. Thinking through these orientations and their spatial, temporal, and social qualities is critical to under- standing chronotopic representations of contemporary Korea. Thought of by many as 3D renditions of 2D social networks, virtual worlds supply many desirable features for the youth market still unavailable in the realm of social networks. Among these are a sense of immediacy, unparalleled media richness, and the heightened interactivity possible in the virtual space. Young consumers respond to the immediacy of communications, meaning that communica- tions occur in real time (while social networks still primarily provide asynchronous response). Real-time response adds to the sense of contact comfort participants feel. Media richness is embellished with the enhanced visual representations of virtual worlds as well as the ability to chat using instant messenger, electronic mail, and sometimes voice chat features. Lastly, social networks like MySpace are limited in what can be offered for participants in terms of entertaining and interactive pursuits within the space. It is no wonder then that young consumers are enam- ored with virtual worlds. eMarketer estimates that 24% of the 34.3 million child and teen Internet users in the United States used virtual worlds on at least a monthly basis in 2007 and this figure is expected to rise rapidly over the short term.1 76 Advertising 2.0 For marketers, social virtual worlds represent an enormous opportu- nity for branding by extending the time consumers spend with a brand’s message from moments to minutes. Some, however, take role-playing (colloquially, “roleplaying” or “RP”) further by constructing deep and complex narratives for their characters and pitting them against others in new and often spontaneous stories that emerge from collaborative efforts. This research looks at the RP community in the MMO Final Fantasy XIV in order to understand how and why RPers choose this form of play in a game already rich with activities. Specifically, I aim to shed light on the relationship between RP and psychosocial well-being. Drawing on perspectives from game studies, media fandom studies, and positive psychology, this research examines RP through a tripartite model of avenues towards well-being: play, flow, and sociality. A mixed-methods approach is used to gather ethnographic data through participant observation and interviews while also sampling broad patterns through a field survey. A cognitive anthropological “cultural models” consensus and consonance methodology allows for the culture of RP to be assessed in its capacity to reinforce and encourage positive experiences for its participants.
