They did not know to protect themselves while they were working. Various sources have estimated that upwards of 12,000 workers will die of asbestos- related disease every year. Most of these workers have, or will have, died ten to forty years after they started working with asbestos. Asbestos can cause disease or kill you unless you protect yourself. Asbestos can kill members of your family unless you take steps not to take asbestos fibers home. There are ways you can protect yourself, those who work with you, and your family. During this class, you will learn how to protect yourself. You will learn how to make your work with asbestos as safe as possible. Protecting yourself from asbestos overexposure while you work means safe for you, safe for your family, and safe for the environment. As you learn the rules for working with asbestos, you will greatly lower your chances of getting sick years from now. You must work smart and carefully. Follow the asbestos and respirator work practice laws. If you do, then you will also help protect your family and neighbors from asbestos-related diseases. The goal of this class is to help you learn how to protect yourself – be a decision-maker. You will learn how to keep asbestos fibers out of the air. You will learn how to keep asbestos out of your lungs if it gets in the air. You will learn how to keep asbestos fibers from spreading outside the work area. You will learn how asbestos fibers may affect your health. You will learn about timely and preventative medical exams which are required for you when working around asbestos. You will be able to make better decisions about your quality of work – and life. Asbestos in a naturally-occurring mineral. It can be found in low levels almost everywhere. Everyone breathes some asbestos just from breathing air. But workers abating asbestos handle large amounts of asbestos. Your employer must give you the proper equipment. You must use this equipment the right way. Such is the stuff of which this class is made. Like most dreams, it hadn’t had a story. I was on top of a grand piano on the rooftop bar of Hotel K. The fact that the real hotel didn’t have a piano on the roof notwithstanding, I was on it and naked from the waist down, propped on my elbows. My knees were spread further apart than physically possible. Customers drank their thirty-dollar drinks and watched as I sang. The song didn’t have words, but I knew them well, and as the strange man with his head between my legs licked me, I sang harder and harder until I woke up with an arched back and soaked sheets, hanging on to a middle C for dear life. Same as the last note of our last song, and I held it like a stranger was pleasuring me on a nonexistent piano. I drew that last note out for everything it was worth, pulling from deep inside my diaphragm, feeling the song rattle the bones of my rib cage, sweat pouring down my face.

Purpose and Scope. (1) This chapter implements Section 376.60, F.S., by establishing a fee schedule for asbestos removal projects. (2) The purpose of the Department's asbestos removal program is to prevent the release of significant amounts of asbestos fibers to the outside air during demolition or renovation activities. Asbestos fibers in the outside air present a risk to human health. (3) The purpose of the fee is to fund the implementation of the Department's asbestos removal program as prescribed in this chapter and in 40 CFR Part 61, Subpart M – National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) for Asbestos, adopted and incorporated by reference in Rule 62- 204.800, F.A.C. (4) This chapter requires prior notification to the Department in accordance with 40 CFR Part 61, Subpart M. Specific Authority 376.60, 403.061 FS. Law Implemented 376.60, 403.061 FS.
