In the lecture on the diffusion of architectural ideas I mentioned 5 different ways that ideas move from place to place or develop over time in architecture. You should have a sense for how these mechanisms work. 1. Elaboration of basic forms 2. Transfer of form through material 3. Transfer of ideas through representation 4. Transfer of ideas by copying good ideas 5. Transfer of ideas through force

In addition to the information above we have talked about how factors such as geography, agricultural practices, the development of written language, vulnerability to enemies, religious practices, trade, availability of materials, and local construction techniques affected the development of cities and buildings. You should have a basic understanding of these relationships.
