Press release Embargoed until 1pm Thursday 21st July 2016 Total New Zealand Commercial Radio Audience Measurement 21 July 2016 Survey 1 – 2016 Contact New Zealand: Libby May Auckland, July 21, 2016 – Results of the Total New Zealand 2016 T +64 27 5677 333 [email protected] Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Survey 1 conducted by GfK were released today at 1pm. For the first time a Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Survey has been conducted across the whole of New Zealand, giving valuable insights into the strength and scope of commercial radio listening across the country. The survey was conducted over 18 weeks and sampled 10,863 people aged 10+. Department of Statistics estimated population data at 30 June 2015 indicates approximately 4,010,000 people aged 10+ years live in New Zealand. The Total New Zealand Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Survey shows over 3,134,000 or 78.2% of them listen to a commercial radio station each week. The new survey has shown that commercial radio continues to deliver across a wide range of demographics across New Zealand: People 10-17: 72.4% listen each week People 18-34: 77.5% listen each week People 25-44: 82.7% listen each week People 25-54: 82.8% listen each week People 45-64: 81.4% listen each week People 55-74: 78.0% listen each week Grocery Buyers: 80.8% listen each week Breakfast radio (Monday to Friday 6am-9am) delivers strong audiences GfK SE across New Zealand with over 2,384,000 people 10+ tuning in across Nordwestring 101 90419 Nuremberg Monday to Friday of an average week. Germany Breakfast results show Newstalk ZB Network with the highest share; 14.8% of commercial radio breakfast listening, followed by More FM Network with Tel. +49 911 395-0 Fax +49 911 395-2209 9.3%. However, many believe that the radio management policies are now increasingly sidelining this aspect of the radio. This is ironic given the fact that the radio stations are supposed to be community platforms where members converge to celebrate their community life and discuss issues of mutual interest. In this case study, I have studied three community radio stations- RS in Nepal, KCR in Sri Lanka and SCR in New Zealand- investigating how the radio management policies are positively or negatively, affecting community access and participation. The study shows that in their effort to stay economically sustainable, the three stations are gradually evolving as a ‘hybrid’; something that sits in-between community and commercial radio. Consequently, programmes that are produced by the local community are often replaced by programmes that are produced by full-time paid staff; and they are more entertaining in nature and accommodate more advertisements.

With the evolution of television in New Zealand moving into the digital age, such as Sky Television and the introduction of Freeview, the switching of radio from analogue to a digital form promises to follow closely behind. The reason digital radio is of major interest in New Zealand is because the Government, along with a digital service provider and some of the nation’s major broadcasters, have been trialling a digital service. But, for New Zealand there are still uncertainties over which digital option to choose, how best to introduce it and control growth, what impact it will have on existing stations, and what will happen to the current market when new stations are established? New Zealand broadcasting and telecommunications company Kordia has already trialled a digital service, Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), but the Government is yet to commit to a long-term rollout of the technology.
