The first injunction of God to man was that the seeds of every herb and the fruits of the trees were given to man for food. The highest orders of most religions have been vegetarians. The strongest people in the world live upon a plain vegetable diet. The healthiest individuals are those who have always refrained from eating flesh. It is more economical, and while requiring less than one-tenth the quantity of land to support life, at the same time giving employment to a vastly increased number to produce a given amount of food. We could go on adding reasons and multiplying the advantages of a natural food diet to the end of our space, but we started with the assertion that one reason was enough and we hope to give one that will appeal to every intelligent being. All are not religious, many do not care for their health, some have no reason to study economy, but all right thinking people must admit that it is degrading for man to live on flesh while only the lower class of animals live by killing others weaker than them- selves. With the possible exception of the dog, there is no flesh-eating animal that is useful to man. The horse, ox, sheep, camel, elephant and many others that have been trained to do man service are all herb- ; THE VEGETARIAN. ivorous. Of course, we are not forgetful of the fur- bearing animals, but we scarcely think that any one in this connection would advocate tearing off the bleeding skins of living creatures to decorate or warm their own bodies. All readers of this paper are at least removed that far from the savage state of exist- ence. The lower orders of mankind, savage races, and the savages which are to be found in great cities delight in bloodshed, but the constant efforts of all enlightened men have always been to restrict killing to punish cruelty, then why not take a stand at the top at once, abolish capital punishment and leave off paying weaker intellects to kill things to enable you to satisfy the unnatural lust for feeding on flesh? How many people who eat lamb would cut the poor animal's throat, tear out its quivering vitals, and then sit down and eat of its flesh? The Christian believes in a future state of exist- ence for mankind, therefore if you kill a good man you have simply sent him to heaven a little in advance of his time. If you rob a man, he must have been a particularly incompetent or incapacitated individual that would not recover from his loss in a short time, but when you rob an animal of its life you are willfully taking from it all it has and all it ever can have to give yourself a few minutes' satisfaction. You know that flesh is not necessary to support life, for you know, or can know, hundreds of strong and vig- orous men, women and children who never pollute their bodies by eating the flesh of animals. Would a man that would kill an animal kill a human being? Let us see. He would not kill any one who offended or defrauded him in a civilized country because he is afraid of the law, but we hear of many boasting of shooting at burglars because they would not be likely to be punished for it. Again we notice that it takes . ; : : THE VEGETARIAN. but slight provocation for a brave explorer in Africa who is surrounded by hundreds of savages armed with death-dealing weapons to constitute himself judge and jury and decide that a tribe must be fired upon because some member of it has stolen some trifling article. Showing that the man who kills an- imals takes pleasure in killing his fellow men (espe- cially if their skin is darker than his own) when he can do so without fear of the law. The killing of animals for food predisposes a man to kill his fellow man when he can do so with safety to himself. It is degrading to humanity to place our- selves on a par with the lowest of the animal creation. Bible Testimony, Daniel, Chapter I., j to 16 verses. 3. And the king spake unto Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed and of the princes 4. Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured and skillful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans. 5 And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king. 6. Now among these were of the children of Ju- dah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah . THE VEGETARIAN. 7. Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names : for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belta- shazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego. 8. But when Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. 9. Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs. 10. And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Dan- iel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink : for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? Then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.

    ~Pryce" Meats and Princes: The Feast as Proving Ground in the Alliterative Marte Arthure and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Mary Frances Zambreno The Alliterative Marte Arthure and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight are generally acknowledged as two of the gn:atest works of what is called the fourteenth-century Alliterative Revival. The feasts that open the two poems are similar in that both celebrate the new year at Arthur's court and both are interrupted by unexpected in­ truders-the Green Knight in Gawain and the Roman emissaries in the Alliterative Mo rte. The New Year's celebration emphasizes the importance of each occasion: the holiday begins the calendar year as the feast begins the poem. Gawain then runs from new year to new year, the cyclical passage of the seasons underlying both its tone and any possible interpretation. In contrast, the Allit­ erative Morie describes the events of several years, but, as Matthews has pointed out, each festival and season is mentioned only once in the poem, creating the overall reflection of a single year (102-03). A New Year's feast thus begins each poem and then contributes directly to organizing the ensuing action. Any two feasts so similar on the surface must be worth com­ paring in detail. The initial difficulty in making such a comparison is the fact that feasts are extremely common in romance, espe­ cially Arthurian romance: Chretien's Hiain, Erec and Enide, and Lancelot, Wolfram von &chenbach's Parzival, and the Mort Artu are only a few ofthe many Arthurian works with important feasts.

    219 No Animal Food: The Road to Veganism in Britain, 1909-1944 Leah Leneman1 UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH There were individuals in the vegetarian movement in Britain who believed that to refrain from eating flesh, fowl, and fish while continuing to partake of dairy products and eggs was not going far enough. Between 1909 and 1912, The Vegetarian Society's journal published a vigorous correspond- ence on this subject. In 1910, a publisher brought out a cookery book entitled, No Animal Food. After World War I, the debate continued within the Vegetarian Society about the acceptability of animal by-products. It centered on issues of cruelty and health as well as on consistency versus expediency. The Society saw its function as one of persuading as many people as possible to give up slaughterhouse products and also refused journal space to those who abjured dairy products. The year 1944 saw the word "vergan" coined and the breakaway Vegan Society formed. The idea that eating animal flesh is unhealthy and morally wrong has been around for millennia, in many different parts of the world and in many cultures (Williams, 1896). In Britain, a national Vegetarian Society was formed in 1847 to promulgate the ideology of non-meat eating (Twigg, 1982). Vegetarianism, as defined by the Society-then and now-and by British vegetarians in general, permitted the consumption of dairy products and eggs on the grounds that it was not necessary to kill the animal to obtain them. In 1944, a group of Vegetarian Society members coined a new word-vegan-for those who refused to partake of any animal product and broke away to form a separate organization, The Vegan Society.

We find ourselves in a world of conflict and war. Why do people fight? Some conflict is driven by a desire to impose a value system, some by intolerance, and some by pure greed and quest for power. The struggle to obtain resources to support life is another important source of conflict; all creatures have a drive to live and sustain themselves. In 1980, Richard J. Barnet, director of the Institute for Policy Studies, warned that by the end of the 20th century, anger and despair of hungry people could lead to terrorist acts and economic class war [Staten Island Advance, Susan Fogy, July 14, 1980, p.1]. Developed nations are the largest polluters in the world; according to Mother Jones (March/April 1997, http://www. motherjones.com/mother_jones/MA97/hawken2.html), for example, Americans, “have the largest material requirements in the world ... each directly or indirectly [using] an average of 125 pounds of material every day ... Americans waste more than 1 million pounds per person per year ... less than 5 percent of the total waste ... gets recycled”. In the US, we make up 6% of the world's population, but consume 30% of its resources [http://www.enough.org.uk/enough02.htm].     Baby Boomer Vegetarians By Stephen F. Barnes, Ph.D. According to some sources, vegetarianism is on a modest uptick or at least holding its own, with about 6.7 percent of the U.S. adult population (20 million) reporting they no longer eat meat, and 2.3 percent (7 million) claiming they never eat meat, fish or fowl—and, by definition, are true vegetarians. Still smaller, about 1.4 percent don’t eat, wear, or use much of anything caught, hatched, milked, or slaughtered (no meat, fish/seafood, poultry, dairy products/eggs) and are known as vegans (pronounced veeguns). Women are twice as likely to avoid eating meat than men, and roughly 10 percent of Baby Boomers are probably non-meat eaters by our non-scientific best estimate. Most of these numbers (see summary box below) are from a national survey conducted in 2009 for the Vegetarian Resource Group. And while the survey sample only consisted of 2,397 adults and used an on-line query technique, the Harris Poll research methodology was considered highly reliable (Stahler, 2009).
