Our genes, however, maintains the “efficient” attitude (thrifty genotype) selected by evolution. Food Pyramid: Old and New: Dr. J. S. Pai The food pyramid was introduced by the US Department of Agriculture in 1992 in order to increase awareness among Americans about good dietary practices. The pyramid looked like as shown below which advocated consumption of good proportions (6-11 servings) of cereal groups including bread, pasta etc. Next to it were fruit (2-4 servings) and vegetable (3-5 servings) groups. It was recommended that meat, beans, eggs and nuts (put altogether) be consumed at 2-3 servings, which was same for milk and its products. Cautionary note was about fats, oils and sweets, recommended to be used sparingly. This simple graphical illustration conveyed rapidly what USDA wanted to say about the healthy diet. This pyramid was taught in schools, appeared in large number of media articles and brochures and was used on cereal boxes and food labels. Unfortunately, the information within this pyramid did not point the way to healthy eating since it was based on shaky scientific evidence and it did not change over the decade during which our understanding of the connection between diet and health made major advancements. Recently, the new food pyramid MyPyramid, was launched by the USDA based on its January 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans is supposed to be an improvement over the earlier model. This one highlights the benefits of whole grains and emphasizes healthy fats and low-fat dairy products for consumers. The new symbol shown below has turned the old pyramid on its side and buries the old pyramid but still there are some flaws which continue to remain in the new model as well. -

It is more difficult to distance ourselves from our own views, so that we can dispassionately search for prejudices among the beliefs and values we hold.” - Peter Singer “It's a matter of taking the side of the weak against the strong, something the best people have always done.” - Harriet Beecher Stowe In my experience of teaching philosophy, ethics and logic courses, I have found that no topic brings out the rational and emotional best and worst in people than ethical questions about the treatment of animals. This is not surprising since, unlike questions about social policy, generally about what other people should do, moral questions about animals are personal. As philosopher Peter Singer has observed, “For most human beings, especially in modern urban and suburban communities, the most direct form of contact with non-human animals is at mealtimes: we eat Between the Species, VIII, August 2008, cla.calpoly.edu/bts/ 1 them.”1 For most of us, then, our own daily behaviors and choices are challenged when we reflect on the reasons given to think that change is needed in our treatment of, and attitudes toward, animals. That the issue is personal presents unique challenges, and great opportunities, for intellectual and moral progress. Here I present some of the reasons given for and against taking animals seriously and reflect on the role of reason in our lives. -

The Food Pyramid: A Dietary Guideline in Europe 01 October 2009 Nowadays there is a mass of information and advice available from different sources about nutrition and health, and interested individuals can find details about the nutrients (e.g. carbohydrates, fat, protein, vitamins and minerals) they should be eating to achieve a healthy balanced diet. Food labels can also provide useful details on the amounts of the different nutrients contained in a food. However, the nutrient information available can seem quite complex, is not well understood by the majority of consumers, and it is of limited use when preparing family menus without a good knowledge of nutrition. This makes it necessary to provide nutrient advice in a way consumers can understand. What are Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDG)? Food-based dietary guidelines (FBDG) are simple messages on healthy eating, aimed at the general public. They give an indication of what a person should be eating in terms of foods rather than nutrients, and provide a basic framework to use when planning meals or daily menus. Characteristics as described by the World Health Organization (WHO) are the expression of the principles of nutrition education mostly as foods. intended for use by individual members of the general public, and if not expressed entirely as foods, written in language that avoids, as far as possible, the technical terms of nutritional science. FBDG should provide simple, food-based messages that are relevant to the population concerned and practical to follow. They can be broad and unspecific such as ‘eat a variety of foods each day’ or ‘eat plenty of fruits and vegetables’, or more specific such as ‘eat five portions of fruits and vegetables a day’. -

Consider that the most common rationale for veganism is avoiding unnecessary harm to animals.1 It is a well-known fact that animals are killed in the cultivation of plant foods such as wheat, corn and soybeans. Mice, rabbits and other field creatures are routinely run over by tractors or cut in two by harvesters. To buy commercial plant food therefore is to sustain the system responsible for these deaths. Road-killed animals, by contrast, are already dead, so the decision to consume them does not perpetuate a lethal process. A diet that consists entirely of plant food therefore will be responsible for a greater number of animal fatalities than a mostly-plant diet that also includes roadkill but no other meat. So goes the argument of Donald Bruckner’s cheeky paper, “Strict Vegetarianism is Immoral,” a standout chapter of The Moral Complexities of Eating Meat. Anyone who follows the animal ethics literature will be familiar with defences of meat eating premised on a rejection of animal rights. Bruckner’s ingenious argument by contrast is premised on animals having rights. This captures something of the collection in general, which offers original moves and thought-provoking conclusions with impressive frequency. Moral Complexities has three sections.
