~Pryce" Meats and Princes: The Feast as Proving Ground in the Alliterative Marte Arthure and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Mary Frances Zambreno The Alliterative Marte Arthure and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight are generally acknowledged as two of the gn:atest works of what is called the fourteenth-century Alliterative Revival. The feasts that open the two poems are similar in that both celebrate the new year at Arthur's court and both are interrupted by unexpected in truders-the Green Knight in Gawain and the Roman emissaries in the Alliterative Mo rte. The New Year's celebration emphasizes the importance of each occasion: the holiday begins the calendar year as the feast begins the poem. Gawain then runs from new year to new year, the cyclical passage of the seasons underlying both its tone and any possible interpretation. In contrast, the Allit erative Morie describes the events of several years, but, as Matthews has pointed out, each festival and season is mentioned only once in the poem, creating the overall reflection of a single year (102-03). A New Year's feast thus begins each poem and then contributes directly to organizing the ensuing action. Any two feasts so similar on the surface must be worth com paring in detail. The initial difficulty in making such a comparison is the fact that feasts are extremely common in romance, espe cially Arthurian romance: Chretien's Hiain, Erec and Enide, and Lancelot, Wolfram von &chenbach's Parzival, and the Mort Artu are only a few ofthe many Arthurian works with important feasts.

  • Viewing Wars
Viewing Wars: Action Heroes and Canadian Mothers Concerns about Violent Television for Boys 3-6 Stephen Kline Media Analysis Laboratory Simon Fraser University Canada (draft June 2, 1999) Much of the growing interest in the analysis of audiences is written against the previous effects approach to understanding mass media. These models primarily theorized the influence of mass media rather narrowly as the flow of a dominant meaning from TV (stimulus) to audiences (respondents) and subsumed the idea that ‘reception’ could best be understood as the ’assimilation and storage of that meaning’. Since the late 1970’s however, challenged by a new theorizing of separate encoding and decoding processes (Hall’s 1980), communications studies has become aware of the fragmentation of mass media audiences and the active assimilation of media content (Morley 1986, Schroder 1994). This has inspired greater interest in viewers motivations and choices underlying viewing, and the reception processes have become the focal point for an audience centred study of communication and media culture (Livingstone 1998). There is a growing interest in applying this approach to children’s relationship to media (Livingstone 1999). In this regard, the work of the Himmelweit project using cross national comparative research on children and youth audiences is providing an empirical basis for a broad and subtle understanding of the global problem of children and media. Yet in the light of research that shows young audiences often make diverse, unexpected and even aberrant readings of their media, there is a growing need to better theorize the ‘diversity’ in young peoples media use and audiences (David Buckingham 1993, 1997).

I feel lucky to have a unique perspective on William & Mary. As a Muscarelle Museum of Art Foundation board member, an emeritus member of the William & Mary Law School Foundation board and a past president of the Alumni Association, I’ve seen first-hand the resources and commitment it takes to keep William & Mary on the leading edge of higher education — and how diligently the university puts our contributions to work. • A Hidden Culture Anne Wood on How Art Helps Young Children Develop
Perspectives on the value of art and culture Children and the Arts: A Hidden Culture Anne Wood on how art helps young children develop READ ON Anne Wood Back Next 02 Anne Wood is one of the most influential figures in children’s television. Born in Spennymoor, County Durham, she grew up in the mining community of Tudhoe Colliery then began a career as a secondary school teacher. She was a leading voice for children’s literature before launching a career in broadcasting. In 1984, she formed Ragdoll Productions, known for such television series as Rosie & Jim, Tots TV, Brum, In the Night Garden, Twirlywoos – and Teletubbies. She is the founder of The Ragdoll Foundation (www.ragdollfoundation.org.uk), which aims to provide a space for alternative thinking, voices and practices, to seek new creative solutions and partners, and to collaborate and share knowledge. It is currently leading the Save Kids’ Content UK campaign (www.savekidscontent.org.uk), which has the particular objective of safeguarding the production of UK- originated television for children. As a cultural notion, childhood emerged in western society somewhere around the 1850s and lasted until somewhere around the 1950s when the cult of the teenager first made itself felt in the USA, and spread around the world. Now, in the 21st century, we hear children are ‘growing up too fast’ or that ‘childhood is lost’. It is not that children are biologically changing. Although many may be taller, more robust and have greater life expectancy than previous generations, essentially children are no different. They have the same need to explore life and navigate it successfully, which has always been central to humanity.
