CALL FOR ENTRIES 15 MARCH – 15 JUNE FILMFESTIVAL.NL/PROFESSIONALS Willemien van Aalst Gerben Schermer Festival Director - NFF Festival Director - HAFF

Dear participants,

elcome! We are delighted to meet you in the city that both the Festival (NFF) and Holland Animation Film Festival (HAFF) operate from. We are proud to host the Cartoon W Business seminar in tandem with our solid partners. Annually in late September, the Netherlands Film Festival (NFF) is a vibrant event for connecting both filmmakers and audiences. The NFF, with the concurrent Holland Film Meeting, is the authoritative festival for Dutch cinema, fostering the interests of the Dutch film and film culture by drawing wide attention to it and by deepening and broadening knowledge about the discipline. We are very happy to see our great city brighten up with scores of animation enthusiasts and professionals in March at HAFF and now at Cartoon Business as well. HAFF is one of the leading international animation festivals and official partner of Cartoon d’Or. It is important to have these events celebrate the art and build on sustaining it. Therefore, we are pleased Cartoon Business chose the city of Utrecht – the rightfully proclaimed animation capital of the Netherlands – for this high-quality seminar focusing on financing and distribution. The Dutch animation sector is on a roll. Very recently with Nina Gantz’s short “Edmond”, which clinched awards at BAFTA, BIFA and overseas at Sundance, last year with the Oscar nomination for “A Single Life” by Utrecht-based studio Job, Joris & Marieke and a 2015 Golden Calf for Best Short Film for Erik van Schaaik’s “Under the Apple Tree”, plus production companies Submarine and Utrecht’s il Luster, who excel in animated features and animation for television. Another vital element contributing to Utrecht as an animation hub is the nurturing role the University of the Arts Utrecht (HKU) plays for emerging animation talents. We believe in bringing people and parties together to make the sector prosper and to be able to jointly embrace cinema, television and interactive (co) productions at film festivals. We wish you all an exhilarating three days and a lot of inspiration and dynamic alliances for the future!

5 Kees Diepeveen Executive for Culture - City of Utrecht

Dear Cartoon Business Seminar attendants,

n behalf of the Mayor and Municipal Executive I warmly welcome you to Cartoon Business in Utrecht. We are proud to host Cartoon Business for the first time in Utrecht, because in many O ways our beautiful city is the place to be for professionals like you. I assume many of you attended the Holland Animation Film Festival last week, a great example of how our city is involved with animation, movies and everything in its context. I will give you some other examples. The international blockbuster “Miffy the Movie” was based on the work of Dick Bruna, the famous cartoonist who was born and raised in Utrecht. We host The Netherlands Film Festival and Holland Animation Film Festival, and our academy of arts (HKU) is one of the greatest suppliers of animation talent. Many Dutch film professionals studied at the University of Utrecht. Also, Utrecht houses multiple successful international studios such as Job, Joris and Marieke (productions like “(Otto)”, “Mute”, “the Tumblies”, “A single life”, that received an Oscar nomination) and il Luster “Woezel & Pip”, just released and already 100.000 visitors in two weeks, “Fallin’ Floyd”, “Resurrection”, “Triple Trouble animal TV” & “Pilar e.g.”. Impressed? Well, there is more! Utrecht is the beating heart of the Netherlands. A medieval city center small enough to explore on foot, and large enough to enjoy world-class festivals, modern architecture, trendy shops and interesting museums for days on end. Utrecht is developing from a medium-sized provincial city into a regional capital of European importance. The city’s current expansion, more rapid than any in the city’s long history, combines physical expansion with innovation, major economic opportunities and a new urban dynamism. As a medieval treasure and a leading academic, technological and cultural center, Utrecht is now a pro-active player in the international community. The last couple of years have seen an amazing increase of the professionalism in the animation scene. Seminars like this help a lot, so we are delighted to host this edition of Cartoon Business in Utrecht. I sincerely hope everyone attending Cartoon Business enjoys this seminar, and everything our beautiful city has to offer!

WELCOME IN THE JUNGLE Deborah (21 - Student) Once you enter LEBOWSKI and walk pass the bar and all the way to the back you’ll arrive to the fun part. You’ll be accompanied by a giraffe while you sit down for a snack or dinner. It’s reasonable prices, but the most promintent reason for coming here are the stuffed animals. But don’t feed them! (Mon - Thu: 11:00 to 1:00, Fri: 11:00 to 2:00, Sat: 10:00 to 2:00, Sun: 11:00 to 0:00) Domplein 17

BEERS, BEERS AND BEERS Frank (30 - Marketer) If beer is your drink, you’ll be in heaven at KAFE BELGIE. TOKO Stephanie (27 - Blogger) The Indonesian cuisine is alway popular and loved in The Netherlands and the Indonesian family running restaurant BLAUW knows how to prepare some food! The look of the place is quite trendy and mostly red, even though the name suggests otherwise. For the classic Indonesian experience try one of their nasi goreng dishes with saté. 7 8 Doreen Boonekamp CEO - Netherlands Film Fund

Dear participant,

n behalf of the Netherlands Film Fund I warmly welcome you to Cartoon Business and to my home town, the creative city of Utrecht. OThe Netherlands has a long tradition of high-quality animated shorts. Over the last years the Dutch animation industry has very rapidly opened up to series and features as well as to the international market. Dutch broadcasters and animation producers are increasingly active at international markets and their dedicated partnerships in internationally coproduced animated films, series and shorts is swiftly growing. The Fund focuses on the development and strengthening of Dutch cinema and film culture both domestically and internationally. It strives to intensify international collaboration by stimulating international co-production and cross border distribution through selective support schemes for both creative majority and minority co-productions with a strong international appeal. Besides this the Netherlands Film Production Incentive scheme offers an attractive 30% cash rebate for production spend in the Netherlands. The Fund also oversees the activities of the Netherlands Film Commission which is the official liaison between the Dutch creative industries and foreign producers and production companies. I am very happy that Cartoon Business chose Utrecht as a venue for this high level seminar. We are looking forward to witness how this years’ focus on smaller producing countries will stimulate animation producers from countries with smaller local markets to actively participate in future co-productions. I wish you a fruitful seminar and a pleasant stay in Utrecht.

Here at Economic Board Utrecht (EBU) we believe that these challenges offer us commercial opportunities. That’s why we help businesses make green, healthy and smart business cases into sound investments. Business Cases that offer a solution to these challenges. Solutions that work and that create work. We bring together sectors that aren’t yet communicating sufficiently with each other. We connect businesses with authorities and knowledge institutions in new consortiums. Consortiums with scalable initiatives which lead to new products and services which will make life Greener, Healthier and Smarter, both in the Utrecht region and beyond. Initiatives that generate growth, jobs and market share for businesses in the Utrecht region. We’re always looking for public-private partnerships, existing or in the making, which will help implement the focus areas of the EBU agenda in its strategic Green, Healthy and/or Slim areas.
