We hit a wall and are not sure what to do next, so we go right along doing it more. All that well-intentioned effort can snowball and ferment into confl ict. One of many examples: An overpro- tective parent or spouse can smother the one they love so much that they stifl e nearly everything the relationship had going for it. The closer they pull, the more the other side wants to break free. The only thing some people know how to do at some point is to dig in and power through: Yell louder to win ar- guments, give harsher punishments to stubborn children, ride employees hard- er, pull that door so hard it nearly comes off its hinges. It tires you out and people get tired of you. When we encounter a barrier in serv- ing Hashem, we try the same things. Mitzvos – like the many we fi nd in Parshas Mishpatim – are certainly not Norman Doors but they can seem coun- terintuitive, or foreign, to us. We misread them because the world is upside down and so are we, right along with it. The Nesivos Shalom teaches that doing mitz- vos and serving Hashem brings order, completeness, and truth to the world, the world is harmonious when we’re in harmony with Hashem. Until we under- stand that, we’re stuck, upside down, and fumbling in the dark. When it comes to solving our prob- lems, the solution starts with us (It’s al- ways easier to change yourself). Instead of working against ourselves, what if we considered something that would get us to stop spinning our wheels and perhaps still get results? Step back; fi nd a differ- ent angle. What if we were to evaluate how we’re working, not how hard we tried? Sometimes it’s just a simple adjust- ment: Listen instead of talk, give instead of take, be stern instead of soft, and the other way around. Try to do naaseh more than nishma. It is hard to fathom how gargantuan it is, and it is surely impossible to describe. It is so vast that it is quite noticeable from the window of a plane fl ying overhead. All of the beautiful panoramic scenery and beau- tiful views that I have seen during my life are dwarfed by the “opulent depth” of the Grand Canyon. Word #2: Terrorist Every time a Jew is stabbed in Israel, the media reports that it was done by a “ter- rorist.” When a car is rammed into IDF sol- diers, it was done by a “terrorist.” The rea- son this word is used is because of… sleight of mouth. The media doesn’t want you to look at Arabs and think that they can kill at any moment, so… poof! – the magical-me- dia-man has just turned that 17-year-old Arab into a dreaded terrorist. In my mind, a “terrorist” is one who has been trained for years in military maneuvers. A soldier from Hezbollah is a terrorist, while a 25-year-old Arab woman who stabs a soldier with a kitchen knife is not. A trained fi ghter from al-Qaeda is a terrorist, but his 19-year-old cousin who drove his car into innocent Jews crossing the street in Jerusalem is not. He is an Arab. Period. Word #3: Disengage I have to admit that the creator of this word deserves some sort of prize. How do you make the expulsion of 10,000 Jews from Gush Katif seem okay? After all, they were literally thrown out of their homes! Many years later we see that scene being repeated in Amona, Migron, and Ofra, with men, women, and children being forcibly dragged away while their homes are turned into piles of rubble. How can one justify that? Simple! The “David Cop- perfi eld Word Magician” tells you that these Jews were not expelled (bad word) or kicked out (also bad word) – they were merely “disengaged.” Say what? Yes, the 10,000 people were part of the Disengage-

These circles can be muted by using a cream concealer in a peachy/beige color. Stay away from very light colors as they will make your skin look ashy. Begin by applying color under the tear duct, where the discoloration is often concentrated. Then bring the color around to cover the rest of the undereye area, which needs ad- justment. If the circles are quite dark, draw attention away by using vivid or dramatic eye makeup on the upper lids. Lengthen- ing a short brow is also effective because it will draw attention upward and outward. Make sure the line is soft to avoid looking artifi cial.
