I had the great privilege of conducting my initial research on Orthodox Judaism under the mentorship of the legendary late Professor Jacob Katz. His model of rigorous engagement with texts, discerning assessment of contextual factors, and introduction of insightful analytical methodologies, which did not prevent him from addressing subjects about which he cared deeply, remains my gold standard. Since I began my doctoral work under his guidance, I have gained a great deal from my relationship with the outstanding historian Professor Ger- shon Bacon, who is today a close colleague and friend. His vast erudition and appreciation of the subtleties involved in writing about the history of modern and contemporary Jewish religious life continued to be a decisive influence on the preparation of this book. My intensive scholarly engagement with North American Jewry began in 2001 when I received a wonderful invitation to serve as a fellow at Bar-Ilan Uni- versity’s Rappaport Center for Assimilation Research from its director, Professor Zvi Zohar. The generous research funding enabled me to carry out fieldwork throughout North America and to produce a series of studies that contain some of my initial examinations of American Orthodoxy. It was at this time that I had the honor of developing a close intellectual bond with the late Professor Charles S. Liebman. He was unusually giving with his time, and no less strident in rendering his frank assessments of my work. Soon after, I began to teach on a full-time basis in Bar-Ilan’s Graduate Program in Contemporary Jewry. Pro- fessor Judy Baumel-Schwartz, the chair of the program, has ever since been a consistently encouraging but honest critic and a genuine friend. My position was facilitated initially through appointment as the Gwendolyn and Joseph Straus Fellow in Jewish Studies. In Russia, Austria-Hungary, Germany, and a few other countries, official figures are obtainable.     eSharp Issue 20: New Horizons A Fresh Perspective on the History of Hasidic Judaism Eva van Loenen (University of Southampton) Introduction In this article, I shall examine the history of Hasidic Judaism, a mystical,1 ultra-orthodox2 branch of Judaism, which values joyfully worshipping God’s presence in nature as highly as the strict observance of the laws of Torah3 and Talmud.4 In spite of being understudied, the history of Hasidic Judaism has divided historians until today. Indeed, Hasidic Jewish history is not one monolithic, clear-cut, straightforward chronicle. Rather, each scholar has created his own narrative and each one is as different as its author. While a brief introduction such as this cannot enter into all the myriad divergences and similarities between these stories, what I will attempt to do here is to incorporate and compare an array of different views in order to summarise the history of Hasidism and provide a more objective analysis, which has not yet been undertaken. Furthermore, my historical introduction in Hasidic Judaism will exemplify how mystical branches of mainstream religions might develop and shed light on an under-researched division of Judaism. The main focus of 1 Mystical movements strive for a personal experience of God or of his presence and values intuitive, spiritual insight or revelationary knowledge. The knowledge gained is generally ‘esoteric’ (‘within’ or hidden), leading to the term ‘esotericism’ as opposed to exoteric, based on the external reality which can be attested by anyone. 2 Ultra-orthodox Jews adhere most strictly to Jewish law as the holy word of God, delivered perfectly and completely to Moses on Mount Sinai.

It is hoped that the reader will find here some appreciation of the vitality of American Orthodoxy. Director, Extension Education, Bureau of Jewish Education, New York INTRODUCTION It is generally agreed that there is a great need to-day for civic instruction which will function more effectively. Our life and needs are becoming more complex; our stand- ards of civic behavior are being constantly revised upwards, and the civic responsibilities which our citizens must dis- charge are becoming increasingly difficult. Education for citizenship should occupy a central position in the public school curriculum. The civic pos- sibilities of all the school subjects should be utilized to a maximum, and the specific ideals of citizenship should become the possession of the pupils as a result of their entire school training and activity. In addition there should be provided, wherever neces- sary, aside from the general courses, supplementary in- struction to meet specific needs of pupils, which shall have been ascertained beforehand. This suggestion applies with particular force to schools which are located in neighborhoods of comparatively large immigrant populations. Wherever fairly homogeneous groups of children could be located, 166 AMERICAN JEWISH YEAR BOOK it would prove best to make a diagnosis of the civic virtues ;ind deficiencies of the corresponding adult group, to es- tablish their prevailing civic characteristics, both favorable and unfavorable, and to develop, on the basis of the out- standing needs revealed, special supplementary courses that would tend to prevent or correct the expected short- comings, to improve the desirable traits and approved qualities which are insufficiently or wrongly developed, and to capitalize fully the civic potentialities of the younger generation.

    Exploring Judaism’s Denominational Divide Coming to America… Rabbi Brett R. Isserow OLLI Winter 2020 A very brief early history of Jews in America • September 1654 a small group of Sephardic refugees arrived aboard the Ste. Catherine from Brazil and disembarked at New Amsterdam, part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. • The Governor, Peter Stuyvesant, petitioned the Dutch West India Company for permission to expel them but for financial reasons they overruled him. • Soon other Jews from Amsterdam joined this small community. • After the British took over in 1664, more Jews arrived and by the beginning of the 1700’s had established the first synagogue in New York. • Officially named K.K. Shearith Israel, it soon became the hub of the community, and membership soon included a number of Ashkenazi Jews as well. • Lay leadership controlled the community with properly trained Rabbis only arriving in the 1840’s. • Communities proliferated throughout the colonies e.g. Savannah (1733), Charleston (1740’s), Philadelphia (1740’s), Newport (1750’s). • During the American Revolution the Jews, like everyone else, were split between those who were Loyalists (apparently a distinct minority) and those who supported independence. • There was a migration from places like Newport to Philadelphia and New York. • The Constitution etc. guaranteed Jewish freedom of worship but no specific “Jew Bill” was needed. • By the 1820’s there were about 3000-6000 Jews in America and although they were spread across the country New York and Charleston were the main centers. • In both of these, younger American born Jews pushed for revitalization and change, forming B’nai Jeshurun in New York and a splinter group in Charleston.
