In this survey, the selection of data and of scholarly opinions that are treated at some length is the result of personal experience with the field of study. In some way, it is the book the author wishes he could have had at his disposal when, eleven years ago, he began the study of the languages of the ancient Balkans. This is the spirit in which he would like it to be accepted. Another person’s presen­ tation would be different. It cannot be otherwise in a field in which the body of universally shared opinions and received doctrines is small and the approaches of those concerned with it vary considerably. More space has been given to the literary sour­ ces than one would expect in such a series; however, for this subject it was vital to provide the appropriate philological and: historical basis.     Fabrizio Vanni – Centro Studi Romei <Firenze> OVERLAND BALKAN ROUTES IN THE MIDDLE AGES1 Summary, with a special focus on cultural-political implications. Summarising a subject such as overland Balkan routes in the middle ages in only fifteen minutes is an arduous task. This topic has been the focus of very little literature and would certainly merit a more in-depth discussion on all the points raised. Some of these points may appear controversial at the very least, such as for example the concept itself of the continuity of these roads over time. After having meditated on it for a long time, I became even more convinced of this, following the international meeting held two months ago at Le Puy-en-Velay to celebrate the Council of Europe’s recognition of the first European cultural itinerary 20 years ago - the route to Santiago di Compostela. The meeting was an opportunity which fuelled further reflection on how Council of Europe cultural itineraries are set to evolve in the future. I therefore decided to limit myself to a few references to the scientific part of my presentation. This will nevertheless be handed to the Congress Secretariat to be included in its Documentation in full and is already available in Italian on the Centro Studi Romei website (www.centrostudiromei.eu). In fact, I believe it is my duty to participants from Greece, the Balkans and Western Europe in general to express a need which is highly felt by the Centro Studi Romei and shared by many cultural operators from around Europe. The time has come to bridge a gap.

    NeuroQuantology | September 2016 | Volume 14 | Issue 3 | Page 544-566 | doi: 10.14704/nq.2016.14.3.898 544 Ruck CAP., The wolves of war The Wolves of War: Evidence of an Ancient Cult of Warrior Lycanthropy Carl Anton Paul Ruck ABSTRACT Archaeological evidence indicates that naturally occurring megalithic structures that resemble mushrooms throughout the region identified as Thrace in antiquity were the foci of religious observances, sometime with the fungal likeness of the stone structures intensified by human intervention. Thrace was considered the probable origin of Dionysian rites. Wine was recognized in antiquity as the product of fungal growth and the drink was a cultivated version of wild intoxicants, among which was the mushroom. The rituals in celebration of the deity commemorated his primordial identity as resident in these wild plants and mediated his evolution into the intoxicant grown upon the cultivated grapevine, and the wine itself was fortified beyond its alcoholic content by the addition of these wild antecedents of viticulture. The legendary wine of Thrace was particularly potent through the addition of a psychoactive mushroom. The rituals of the women known as bacchants enacted the fantasies of root-cutters in commemoration of the deity in his persona that predated viticulture. This fungal persona represents the same intoxicant that was known to the Persians as haoma and represents the spread of an Indo-European sacrament into the Classical world, with its association of lycanthropy and the bonding of warriors into brotherhoods as packs of wolves, better known in its manifestation in late antiquity among the Nordic peoples as berserkers.
