  • Abstract Evaluating Holocene Precipitation
ABSTRACT EVALUATING HOLOCENE PRECIPITATION VARIABILITY IN THE BALTIC REGION USING OXYGEN ISOTOPES OF LACUSTRINE CARBONATE FROM ESTONIA Carolyn Fortney, M.S. Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences Northern Illinois University, 2016 Nathan D. Stansell, Director Oxygen isotopes derived from authigenic carbonate from open lake systems record variations in seasonal precipitation source. This study focuses on the sediment record from Lake Nuudsaku in southern Estonia to evaluate how winter versus summer precipitation has changed throughout the Holocene as a result of fluctuating North Atlantic Ocean conditions, primarily the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Estonia receives precipitation with a lower δ18O value from the North Atlantic and Baltic Sea during the winter months. In contrast, during the summer months Estonia receives precipitation with greater δ18O values from warmer North Atlantic waters and from the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea. Therefore, lower δ18O values in the carbonate record were interpreted as periods of time in which there were increases in the amount of winter precipitation. Oxygen isotope data indicate relatively wet winters during the early Holocene (9960 to 8800 cal yr BP) followed by a shift toward drier winters during the middle of the Holocene (8800 to 4200 cal yr BP). The late Holocene (4200 cal yr BP to the present) was characterized by the wettest winters recorded in the oxygen isotope record. The periods of increased winter precipitation in the Baltic region generally coincided with periods of increased NAO index between 5200 cal yr BP and 1000 cal yr BP. There was an inverse relationship between winter precipitation and NAO index during the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age (900 to 100 cal yr BP).

  • The Portal of South-Estonian Folklore
LEPP: THE DATABASE AND PORTAL OF SOUTH-ESTONIAN FOLKLORE Mare Kõiva & Liisa Vesik Abstract The article overviews the national database of South-Estonian folklore, the online version entitled LEPP (http//www.folklore.ee/lepp), its struc- ture, content copyrights, access, metadata and typological issues. LEPP is a universal database, containing all folklore genres and cultural his- tory (mainly oral history). The database is free for scientific and non- commercial use. A closer look is taken at possible citation and long-term maintenance. The behaviour of large data masses and validity of search results is tested on the preliminary corpus (ca 100 000 pages of manu- script texts) compiled of the material collected from Rõuge parish. Keywords: database, folklore, oral history, citation, preservation, South- Estonia, metadata. The common goals of database compilers are preservation of data, conservation of source materials, systematisation of the material and making it accessible for different target audiences. The data- base of South-Estonian folklore in the form of the portal of South- Estonian folklore LEPP. Lõuna-Eesti pärimuse portaal, available at http://www.folklore.ee/lepp, as one of the projects of the state pro- gramme South-Estonian Language and Culture, follows the same principles. LEPP is intended as a universal database, combining all folklore genres and, optimally, comprehensive archive entries, which in ad- dition to folkloric material include cultural historical material by regions. The texts to be digitalised are systematised according to topography of origin, and represent the spiritual culture and oral narrative history from former parishes in South Estonia. As the database combines different genres of folklore, the material corpus inevitably includes items of varying format, of different scope and conditions of preservation.

  • No Money, No Farm? Mobilizing Resources for Land Purchase by Migrants in Post-Emancipation Estonia
No money, no farm? Mobilizing resources for land purchase by migrants in post-emancipation Estonia by Kersti Lust Land purchase by migrants in post-emancipation Estonia Abstract This article evaluates the role of family ties and social networks in mobilizing financial resources for land purchase and conveying information about migration destinations in nineteenth-century Estonia. It complements the existing body of literature on the non-institutionalized forms of borrowing and providing information in environments where markets were inefficient by extending the geographical scope to the eastern part of Europe. The study helps us to understand how peasants who had only recently started to pay money rent instead of labour dues and marketed a small portion of farm products could manage to purchase a farm, which normally meant paying 25–30 times the annual rent as a purchase price. Besides growing flax and becoming tenants prior to the purchase, it was family and communal networks that proved crucial to their success. Family members and relatives provided larger credit than non-family members, but larger social networks facilitated access to information. Land purchase typically requires substantial financial resources and migration also requires access to information. In most research, it is asserted that social networks enable better access to resources and improve outcomes for their members.1 It is also believed that features of the network such as the strength of ties determine to a great extent what kind of resources a person within that network receives – that the strongest ties give access to finance and that weaker ties can still be important channels for information.

The terms “polyfunctionalism”, “group melodies” or “general melodies” have been used by Estonian researches to indicate the phenomenon that many lyrics were sung to only one, or a small handful, of tunes. The scarcity of melo- dies is supposed to be one of several related phenomena characteristic to an oral, text-centred singing culture. In this article the Estonian folk song tradition will be analysed against a quantity of melodies and their usage in the following aspects: word-and-melody relationships and context-and-melody relationships in Karksi parish (south Estonia); a singer; and native musical terms and the process of sing- ing and (re)creation. KEYWORDS: ethnomusicology ● regilaul ● formula melody ● folk song improvisa- tion ● folk singer IntRODuctiON In this article an attempt will be made to describe and analyse certain aspects of oral singing culture, which appear at first as the abundance of lyrics and scarcity of melo- dies, causing the same melodies to be sung with many texts. Researchers point this out using various terms. The use of limited musical material characterises (at least partially) several traditional song cultures which are quite different according to their location and music style, e.g. Balto-Finnic, Finno-Ugric and Scandinavian peoples, Central- and East-Asian peoples, and also Western folk music and church music, etc.

Eesti Vabaduse Rist ehk Vabadusrist (VR) on riiklik teenetemärk, mida annetas Vabariigi Valitsus Vabadussõjas osutatud sõjaliste tee- nete, lahingutes üles näidatud isikliku vapruse ja mitmesuguste tsiviil teenete eest. Samuti anti see kõrge orden Verduni linnale ning Prantsuse, Inglise ja Itaalia Tundmatule Sõdurile. Lisaks on Vabaduse Rist tsiviilteenete eest antud 1924. aasta 1. detsembri mässu maha- surumisel silma paistnud 10 mehele. Tänaseks on otsene seos sel- le teenetemärgi kandjatega katkenud, sest 6. oktoobril 2000 suri Karl Jaanus, viimane Vabaduse Risti kavaler. Ta maeti sõjaväeliste austus- avalduste saatel Pilistvere kalmistule. Nimetatud ordeni pälvinud Eesti kodanikest ligi 300 isikut pärines aja- looliselt Viljandimaalt.
