It comprises three interrelated contributions: a bibliography, three case studies, and a translation. A bibliography of English translations of Hungarian novels published between 2000 and 2016 is presented in Appendix A, and Chapter 1 contains an overview of contemporary Hungarian-to-English fiction translation based on the bibliographic data, including a description of the assembly process. Chapters 2-4 focus more closely on a selection of these texts, tracing publication histories as well as target culture reception and interpreting translation shifts. Chapter 2 considers the language of Seiobo There Below by László Krasznahorkai (2013, tr. Ottilie Mulzet) in relation to the author’s vernacular oeuvre, and offers meta-artistic commentary on the target text. Chapter 3 investigates the concept of corporeal writing in Parallel Stories by Péter Nádas (2011, tr. Imre Goldstein), arguing that the organising principle of the source text is compromised in translation, which produces a fragmented work. Chapter 4 uncovers and categorises translation shifts in Journey by Moonlight by Antal Szerb (2002, tr. Len Rix) as an example of a recently translated Hungarian classic. Chapter 5 connects the analytical section of the thesis with the creative component that follows it. It departs from traditional academic discourse and uses a more reflective, lyrical mode of writing to explore the subjectivity of the translator and introduce the new text to its English-language readership. Peter Sherwood) by contemporary Hungarian novelist Miklós Vámos. The playful tone of the reviewer’s opening gambit may not seem out of line with the usual informal register of online book reviews aimed at the general public, but its content, which will certainly baffle both the Hungarian reader and literary scholar, reveals

Mai 2015) in der Akademie der Wissenschaften Budapest _____________________________________________________________ Über die Aufgaben unserer Bibliothek: Die Beziehungen zwischen Ungarn und den deutschsprachigen Ländern waren immer intensiv, stark beeinflusst von historischen und politischen Ereignissen.- Ein großer In- teressensschub folgte mit der spektakulären Grenzöffnung 1989 und mit dem Themen- schwerpunkt „Ungarn“ auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse1999. Als Imre Kertész 2002 den Literaturnobelpreis erhielt, schaute die deutschsprachige Literatenwelt höchst interes- siert nach Ungarn. Viele Werke und Schriftsteller wurden in der Folge entdeckt, und so hat die ungarische Literatur, besonders die Gegenwartsliteratur, in Deutschland eine zweite Heimat gefunden. Eine unserer Aufgaben ist es, Werke aus unserer Bibliothek an verschiedenen Orten zu präsentieren. Bei den Themen kann immer nur eine Auswahl aus unserem Bestand ge- zeigt werden, der über 2000 Werke umfasst. Themenschwerpunkte waren bisher unter anderen: „Schriftstellerinnen mit ungarischen Wurzeln“ – „Ungarn 1956 in der Literatur“ – oder „Ungarn und die Wende 1989“. In Abstimmung mit der Akademie der Wissen- schaften wurde für diese Ausstellung das Thema gewählt: Die Literatur der Ungarn aus den Gebieten, die heute nicht mehr zu Ungarn gehören; die „Ungarn der Ränder“. Trotz der vielfältigen Krisen in aller Welt wird in westlichen Zeitungen regelmäßig über Ostmitteleuropa berichtet; eigentlich eine Selbstverständlichkeit in Europa! Dennoch haben wir den Eindruck, dass – 25 Jahre nach 1989 – in vielen Köpfen „Die Mauer“ immer noch existiert, auf beiden Seiten: Unwissenheit, Vorurteile, Desinteresse, ver- meintliche Kränkungen, Ungeduld, das sind wohl die häufigsten Ursachen dafür.

Biopolitics and Biopoetics: Some Preliminary Remarks Over the past few decades, competing concepts and tropes of life have displayed a striking vivacity in the discourses of the human and social sciences. This still fairly recent development (no doubt partially fueled by unprecedented developments in biotechnologies) reflects the historical fact that the very meaning, the limits, and the unity of life, as well as the distinctions between life and non-life have become problematic to a great extent. In response to these often anxiety-inducing transformations that unfolded in the wake of the historical and political catastrophes of the 20th century, since the 1990s the terms “biopower” and “biopolitics” have emerged as two of the central categories used by the theoretical humanities to interpret the specificity of our historical present (for a concise overview of the most influential theories of biopower, see Lemke 2011). Today, the wide-ranging consensus that reigns across a number of sub-disciplines holds that, in the end, what is unique about our age will come to light only if we understand our changing relations to “life” itself. The heuristic value of the two terms “biopower” and “biopolitics” lies in the fact that they provide total explanations of virtually all aspects of human existence. If the inherent teleology of the history of power puts it on a path toward an ever more efficient management of life (be that human or non-human), in the end practically all manifestations of human praxis will have to be understood in biopolitical terms.

Critics have attributed this lack of prominence to linguistic isolation or to issues surrounding translation and economic challenges in today's publishing world. This thesis examines a selected body of Hungarian folktales in English. Specifically, it presents the findings of my extensive search for tales in translation and for scholarship on these tales; it offers a system of classifying and describing the selected tales and provides a comparative analysis of variants and types; and it offers an argument for anthologizing tales for a Canadian and/or Hungarian Canadian reading audience. Twenty tales (four variants within each tale category), chosen according to the selection criteria, comprise the body of primary material and are grouped according to tale categories - fairy tales, humorous tales, animal tales, anecdotes, and historical legends. In considering the variants of a selection of tale types and their particular references to Hungarian culture, this study illuminates the persistence of certain Hungarian folktales while highlighting their cultural distinctiveness. Ultimately, by creating awareness of this unique body of tales, my hope is for Canadian readers to be made aware of Hungary's culture and its folk literature, and for the tales to find their way into collections of multicultural folktales, to be released from their isolation, and to join other well-known international folktales on bookshelves around the world.

    Introduction Spatial studies that emerged as a nascent discourse in the post Second World War period has suddenly assumed prominence with the spatial turn in poststructuralist theories. Globalisation, with its liberal immigration policies, has transformed the spatial experiences of individuals and reconfigured the world, redefining spatial relations and reordering existing spatial structures. The virtual space provided by the Internet has added a new spatial experience, which is at once heterotopic and panoptic. The spatial turn in academic discourses leads to the emergence of the politics of spatiality in the practice of everyday life enacted in the social space. In this regard, Robert T. Tally Jr. explains: “The spatial turn is . a turn towards an understanding of our lives as situated in a mobile array of social and spatial relations that, in one way or another, need to be mapped” (17). The fundamental pattern of discursive enquiry has changed: every cultural critique is now punctuated with questions of space, spatiality and spatial relations. Spatial practices have become prominent along with cultural and social practices. The ontological enquiry of space has evolved from space as a container of objects to space as a structured and mediated reflection of social/power relations. Space has been a complex and problematic term in cultural critique. The noted geographer Bertrand Westphal observes that the cosmopolitan diaspora caused by “grand migrations occasioned by economic or political exigencies 2 specific to the industrial, and especially the post-industrial era” has called for a rereading of space (25). A study of the spatial representations in literature opens up a changing world where new spatial experiences and perplexities get constructed.
