Obviously, these items would be a good gift idea for any occasion year-round, as well as a gift for yourself! We do not include many, if any at all, single CDs in the guide. Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. Of course, you can always look though our back issues to see what came out in 2017 (and prior years), but none of us would want to attempt to decide which CDs would be a fitting ad- dition to this guide. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. These are in no particular order in terms of importance or release dates.

Copyright © Cambridge University Press 2010, pp. 437–455 doi:10.1017/S0261143010000255 Crossover: Sam Katzman’s Switchblade Calypso Bop Reefer Madness Swamp Girl or ‘Bad Jazz,’ calypso, beatniks and rock ’n’ roll in 1950s teenpix PETER STANFIELD Film Studies, School of Arts, University of Kent, Canterbury, Kent CT2 7UG, UK E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This essay challenges the received wisdom that teenpix of the 1950s were dominated by a soundtrack of rock ’n’ roll. I argue that this cycle of film production was marked by a diversity of musical genres, styles and types. Not only rock ’n’ roll, but rhythm ’n’ blues, folk, rockabilly, swing, West Coast jazz, bebop, Latin music such as the mambo, the rhumba, the cha cha chá, and Caribbean calypsos were all heavily featured in these films. This study is carried out through a focus on the temporal arrange- ments – fads, cycles, trends – that govern serial production and consumption of movies and popular music. Following Philip Ennis’ thesis that rock ’n’ roll is best defined by its ability to ‘crossover’ musi- cal boundaries – to move, for example, across the pop, country, and rhythm ’n’ blues charts – I argue that the film industry chose not to overly limit the music it had on offer and instead provided a var- ied package, some of which, it expected, would crossover and appeal to diverse and capricious teenage tastes. • Okeh Album Discography Okeh Album Discography by David Edwards and Mike Callahan Last Update: June 9, 2003
OKeh Album Discography OKeh Album Discography By David Edwards and Mike Callahan Last update: June 9, 2003 The OKeh Record label was founded in Germany in 1910, by Carl Linstrom, a German who owned record labels in several countries. In 1918 the OKeh label was established in the United States under Otto Heineman, who was backed by Linstrom. During World War I, the OKeh Label was reorganized as a US company called General Phonograph Corporation, based in New York City. OKeh recorded all types of music, but in 1920 it started the black music recording industry by recording and releasing Mamie Smith's "Crazy Blues." In the following decade it distinguished itself by recording blues and jazz, including Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven Combos. In 1926, the General Phonograph Corporation was sold to the Columbia Phonograph Company. Eight years later, the Columbia Phonograph Company itself was purchased by the American Record Corporation (ARC). The new company kept the Columbia and Vocalion label names but dropped the OKeh label. In 1938, the Columbia Broadcasting System purchased ARC, and two years later, CBS revived the OKeh name by changing the name of the Vocalion label to OKeh. OKeh, as a division of record giant Columbia, was independently distributed and used for rhythm and blues releases. Columbia knew that their mainstream distribution network could not handle rhythm and blues effectively, so they farmed out the distribution of the OKeh label to distributors more in tune with the record shops, clubs, disc jockeys and radio stations involved with rhythm and blues.

I'd been rooting around the History Department where, at age forty-one and only twenty years behind schedule, I'd finished my undergraduate degree. I had the academic bug and I wanted to move on to graduate school. Professor David Montejano was kind enough to let me sit in on one of his graduate courses to allow me to get a feel for what graduate work involved. As the seminar wound down, he suggested that I check out the AMS program on the third floor of Garrison Hall. I looked through the courses the department had been offering over the last few semesters and after noticing subjects like film history, jazz, a large collection of topics in popular culture, and seminars dealing with drugs, alcohol, and the beat generation, I knew I'd found a new home.
