We are here at Fordham University on April 7, 2006 with Jimmy Merchant, an original and founding member of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, who has also had a career as an artist. And with us today, doing the interviews, are Alessandro Buffa, Lorreta Dosorna, Brian Purnell, and Mark Naison. Jimmy, can you tell us a little about your family and where they came from originally? Jimmy Merchant (JM): My mom basically came from Philadelphia. My dad – his family is from the Bahamas. He – my dad – was shifted over to the south as a youngster. His mother was from the Bahamas and she moved into the South – South Carolina, something like that – and he grew up there. -

Biographical Note by The HistoryMakers® Saxophonist, music producer and song writer Gene “Daddy G” Barge was born in Norfolk, Virginia on August, 9 1926. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and played clarinet in the school band. Barge then attended West Virginia State College where he first majored in architecture, but quickly switched to music because of his interest in the saxophone. After receiving his B.A. degree from West Virginia State College in 1950, Barge returned to Norfolk, Virginia and played with a number of bands and singing groups including the Griffin Brothers and the Five Keys. In 1955, Barge recorded his first saxophone instrumentals entitled “Country” and “Way Down Home” on Chess Records’ Checker Label. He taught music at Suffolk High School while playing and singing in bands and touring with both Ray Charles and the Philadelphia vocal group The Turbans. -

ROCK'N'ROLL’S 1ST DECADE Week Three: Rock in the Mid-1950s Recommended Listening: Chuck Berry, The Anthology (Chess, 2000). Two-CD, 50-song compilation of his most essential tracks from the mid-1950s through the early 1970s, including hits and his most influential non- hits. These include some of the most familiar and most-covered songs in all of rock, important both for the quality of the songwriting and the many classic riffs in tunes like "Johnny B. Goode," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Rock and Roll Music," "Sweet Little Sixteen," and "Reelin' & Rockin'." The single-disc collection The Great Twenty-Eight contains most of his most well known songs. Johnny Cash, The Sun Years (Rhino, 1990). Cash is usually considered a country artist, not a rock one. There's no denying, however, that much of his mid-1950s material for Sun had a rockabilly and pop-rock flavor. This has his most popular recordings for the label, including the hits "I Walk the Line," "Ballad of a Teenage Queen," and "Folsom Prison Blues." Fats Domino, Fats Domino Jukebox: 20 Greatest Hits the Way You Originally Heard Them (Capitol, 2002). Fats Domino had more than 20 hits, but this has the most famous ones by the greatest exponent of New Orleans rock'n'roll, including "The Fat Man," "Ain't That a Shame," and "Blueberry Hill." Wanda Jackson, Queen of Rockabilly (Ace, 2000). Commonly and rightfully referred to as the best woman rock artist of the 1950s, Jackson was more than that. She was one of the best rockabilly singers, period. -

I argue that this cycle of film production was marked by a diversity of musical genres, styles and types. Not only rock ’n’ roll, but rhythm ’n’ blues, folk, rockabilly, swing, West Coast jazz, bebop, Latin music such as the mambo, the rhumba, the cha cha chá, and Caribbean calypsos were all heavily featured in these films. This study is carried out through a focus on the temporal arrange- ments – fads, cycles, trends – that govern serial production and consumption of movies and popular music. Following Philip Ennis’ thesis that rock ’n’ roll is best defined by its ability to ‘crossover’ musi- cal boundaries – to move, for example, across the pop, country, and rhythm ’n’ blues charts – I argue that the film industry chose not to overly limit the music it had on offer and instead provided a var- ied package, some of which, it expected, would crossover and appeal to diverse and capricious teenage tastes. ROCK'N'ROLL’S 1ST DECADE Week One: The Roots of Rock Recommended Listening: The Delmore Brothers, Freight Train Boogie (Ace, 1993). Country-boogie songs from 1946-51 by this brother duo, whose more uptempo material was not only some of the finest country music of the era, but an important building block of rockabilly and early rock & roll. Fats Domino, The Early Imperial Singles 1950-1952 (Ace, 1996 & 1997). Thorough collections of the first few years or so of singles by the most important early New Orleans rock'n'roll star, whose singles of the early 1950s weren't all that different from the pop hits he had after rock took off. The Drifters, Let the Boogie-Woogie Roll: Greatest Hits 1953-1958 (Atlantic, 1988). Perhaps the most consistent, and certainly one of the most important, of the doo wop groups that had their first success prior to 1955. This has their mid-1950s R&B hits, some of them featuring lead singer Clyde McPhatter. The Drifters who had numerous early soul hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s had entirely different personnel, and were linked to this version of the group only by the trademark name. Bill Haley & His Comets, Rock the Joint! The Original Essex Recordings 1951-1954 (Rollercoaster, 1992). Bill Haley & His Comets were the first white band to fuse rhythm and blues with country music into something recognizable as rock'n'roll, and were doing so for four years before "Rock Around the Clock" became the first huge rock hit. This has those early recordings, including one from 1952 ("Rock the Joint") quite similar to "Rock Around the Clock," and his first single to become a Top Twenty pop hit, 1953's "Crazy, Man, Crazy."
