Introspection: Neglected Jazz Figures of the 1950s and early 1960s New World NW 275 In the contemporary world of platinum albums and music stations that have adopted limited programming (such as choosing from the Top Forty), even the most acclaimed jazz geniuses—the Armstrongs, Ellingtons, and Parkers—are neglected in terms of the amount of their music that gets heard. Acknowledgment by critics and historians works against neglect, of course, but is no guarantee that a musician will be heard either, just as a few records issued under someone’s name are not truly synonymous with attention. In this album we are concerned with musicians who have found it difficult—occasionally impossible—to record and publicly perform their own music. These six men, who by no means exhaust the legion of the neglected, are linked by the individuality and high quality of their conceptions, as well as by the tenaciousness of their struggle to maintain those conceptions in a world that at best has remained indifferent. Such perseverance in a hostile environment suggests the familiar melodramatic narrative of the suffering artist, and indeed these men have endured a disproportionate share of misfortunes and horrors. That four of the six are now dead indicates the severity of the struggle; the enduring strength of their music, however, is proof that none of these artists was ultimately defeated. Selecting the fifties and sixties as the focus for our investigation is hardly mandatory, for we might look back to earlier years and consider such players as Joe Smith (1902-1937), the supremely lyrical trumpeter who contributed so much to the music of Bessie Smith and Fletcher Henderson; or Dick Wilson (1911-1941), the promising tenor saxophonist featured with Andy Kirk’s Clouds of Joy; or Frankie Newton (1906-1954), whose unique muted-trumpet sound was overlooked during the swing era and whose leftist politics contributed to further neglect. -

Music 133: Rise and Fall of Tin Pan Alley (Subotnik, Spr. 2003)—p. 1 MUSIC 133: SEMINAR IN AMERICAN MUSIC: THE RISE AND FALL OF TIN PAN ALLEY Spring Semester, 2003 Rose Rosengard Subotnik COURSE DESCRIPTION: Focusing on the decades between the 1880s and the 1950s, this course examines social, musical and commercial forces behind the emergence and decline of Tin Pan Alley as well as changes in the substance, treatment, and significance of its songs during their years of popularity. Topics addressed include national identity and race relations as well as the difficulties of analyzing popular music. GOALS OF COURSE: The goal of this course is to give you a sound musical, historical, and critical sense of the Tin Pan Alley type of song, of the changes in style and role that characterized such songs over several generations, and of the various kinds of responses they have generated. Questions we will consider include 1) musical ones (e.g. What repertories does the term “Tin Pan Alley song” designate? In what ways is it useful to discuss the musical characteristics of such songs [their history? their structure? the various styles and mediums that made use of such songs? the identity of the artists who presented them?]] How might we assign musical value to this general category of song, and how might we evaluate individual songs within this category? Why is the Tin Pan Alley song typically denigrated in contrast to jazz, blues, and rock music? What happened to this type of song in the late 1940s and the 1950s, both before and during the transition to rock and roll?); and 2) cultural ones (e.g. -

The music was written by Evelyn Danzig and lyrics by Jack Segal. The song became the standard with many recorded versions and appeared on several Christmas albums. The background and lyrics of Scarlet Ribbons were written in just 15 minutes in 1949 at Danzig's home in Port Washington, New York, after she invited Sigal's lyrics to listen to her music. The song tells a wonderful story: the father hears his little girl praying before going to bed for scarlet hair ribbons. It's late, no shops are open in their town, and there's nowhere the father can get tape so he's distraught all night. At dawn he again peeks and wonders to see the beautiful scarlet ribbons in the gay exuberance lying there. He says that if he lives to be a hundred, he will never know where the tapes came from. The famous versions of Joe Stafford's Scarlet Ribbons were first released by Joe Stafford in 1949. In January 1950, Stafford's version peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Record for Records Most Played by Disc Jockeys. Harry Belafonte in 1952 Harry Belafonte, in his third session for RCA Records, covered the song with an arrangement with his guitarist Millard Thomas and a male vocal group. -

From 1953 to 1969, the scope of his audio collection expands to include musical and cultural traditions from Latin America, the British Isles, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and East Asia.
