The music was written by Evelyn Danzig and lyrics by Jack Segal. The song became the standard with many recorded versions and appeared on several Christmas albums. The background and lyrics of Scarlet Ribbons were written in just 15 minutes in 1949 at Danzig's home in Port Washington, New York, after she invited Sigal's lyrics to listen to her music. The song tells a wonderful story: the father hears his little girl praying before going to bed for scarlet hair ribbons. It's late, no shops are open in their town, and there's nowhere the father can get tape so he's distraught all night. At dawn he again peeks and wonders to see the beautiful scarlet ribbons in the gay exuberance lying there. He says that if he lives to be a hundred, he will never know where the tapes came from. The famous versions of Joe Stafford's Scarlet Ribbons were first released by Joe Stafford in 1949. In January 1950, Stafford's version peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Record for Records Most Played by Disc Jockeys. Harry Belafonte in 1952 Harry Belafonte, in his third session for RCA Records, covered the song with an arrangement with his guitarist Millard Thomas and a male vocal group. The four-year record finally became a success in 1956 after it appeared on his second album, which reached No.1 on the Billboard album chart for six weeks and remained on the chart for more than a year. The song peaked at number 18 on the UK New Musical Express chart in late 1957. In 1959, The Browns released what would be the most successful version of Scarlet Ribbons in the United States. Browns spent 14 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 13 on January 2, 1960, reaching No. 7 on Billboard's Hot C'W Sides. Cliff Richard In 1991, Cliff Richard released the song on his Christmas album Together with Cliff Richard, and as a single. The song peaked at number 19 on the new singles chart and number 51 in Germany. Lights are seen as shedding transparency. Lights are generally hope-filled signs. So the hope has come into the world. And that is Jesus. We have a choice to make, to allow his ways to shine in and through us or to ignore his presence. May we open our eyes. May we enlist help. Volunteers needed to help design, cook, and serve a dinner for the homeless on January 22nd . We will prepare it Sunday afternoon (along with sandwich making) and attend the worship service at Cathedral in the Night at 5pm (DRIVERS NEEDED!). On January 1 during worship, we shall ring in the New Year and Christ's birth by singing On This Day Earth Shall Ring.
