A DEVELOPING COUNTRY A sermon by Galen Guengerich All Souls NYC Online October 4, 2020 In 2003, when Rolling Stone magazine first published its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, three of the top five albums were by the Beatles. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band held the number one spot. In the words of the magazine’s editors, “Sgt. Pepper formally ushered in an unforgettable season of hope, upheaval and achievement: the late 1960’s and, in particular, 1967’s Summer of Love.” “But no list is definitive,” the editors go on to say, “tastes change, new genres emerge, the history of music keeps being rewritten. So we decided to remake our greatest albums list from scratch. To do so, we received and tabulated Top 50 Albums lists from more than 300 artists, producers, critics, and music-industry figures.” Two weeks ago, they published the new list. The Beatles still have one album — Abbey Road — in the top five, but the album in the top spot has changed. The new number one is Marvin Gaye’s 1969 masterpiece What’s Going On. The album began as a reaction to police brutality. As Rolling Stone tells the story, the bass singer for the Four Tops, Obie Benson, watched television coverage of hundreds of club-wielding cops break up protests in the People’s Park in Berkeley. Repulsed by the violence, Benson began writing a song with Motown lyricist Al Cleveland. Together, they tried to capture the confusion and pain of the times. The result was the song “What’s Going On.” Benson tried to get the Four Tops to record the song, but the other three Tops weren’t interested. -

Starr-Waterman American Popular Music Chapter 8: “Rock Around the Clock”: Rock ’n’ Roll, 1954‒1959 Key People Alan Freed (1922‒1965): Disc jockey who discovered in the early 1950s that increasing numbers of young white kids were listening to and requesting rhythm & blues records played on his Moondog Show. Antoine “Fats” Domino (b. 1928): Singer, pianist, and songwriter, who was an established presence on the rhythm & blues charts for several years by the time he scored his first large-scale pop breakthrough with “Ain’t It a Shame” in 1955 and ultimately became the second best-selling artist of the 1950s. Barbra Streisand (b. 1942): Impactful recording artist who has delighted audiences on Broadway, in movies, and in concert, also known for her successful LP sales. Big Joe Turner (1911‒1985): Vocalist who began his career as a singing bartender in the Depression era nightclubs of Kansas City; one of Atlantic Records’ early starts, and recorded the original “Shake, Rattle, and Roll.” Bill Black (1926‒1965): String bassist who recorded with Scotty Moore and Elvis Presley for Sun Records. Bill Haley and the Comets: Influential rock ’n’ roll band influenced by western swing music who recorded the first number one rock ’n’ roll hit “Rock around the Clock.” Brenda Lee (Brenda Mae Tarpley) (b. 1944): Recording artist of the early 1960s known as “Little Miss Dynamite” who sang hits like “Sweet Nothin’s.” Buddy Holly (Charles Hardin Holley) (1936‒1959): Clean-cut, lanky, and bespectacled singer, songwriter, and guitarist of the 1950s who, along with his band, the Crickets, recorded influential hits like “That’ll Be the Day” and made frequent use of double- tracking. -

2 He was a brilliant composer and record producer, one of the best to come out of Motown. He was born on May12th 1940 in Harlem, New York, and passed away on September 16th 2008 in Los Angeles, at the age of 68. He founded Whitfield Records in Los Angeles after his departure from Motown Records. He was known as the father of the “Psychedelic Funk” sound. Longer songs, a heavy bass line, distorted guitars, multi-tracked drums and inventive vocal arrangements became the trademarks of Norman’s production output, mainly with The Temptations. According to Dave Laing (Journalist for the Guardian Newspaper; Thursday 18th September 2008) stated that Norman Whitfield’s first actual job at Motown Records was as a member of staff for which he got paid $15 a week to lend a critical ear to new recordings by Motown staff, a job he said "consisted of being totally honest about what records you were listening to". He graded the tracks for Gordy's monthly staff meeting, where decisions were made on which should be released. Soon dissatisfied with quality control, Whitfield fought to be allowed to create records himself. This involved competing with such established figures as Smokey Robinson, but he got his first 3 opportunities in 1964 with lesser Motown The Temptations’ songs, during the first ten groups, co-writing and producing “Needle years of the label’s operation. Such songs as in a Haystack” by the Velvelettes and “Too “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Many Fish in the Sea” by the Marvelettes. Me)”, “Ball Confusion”, “Papa Was a Rollin’ These records brought him the chance to Stone” and “I Can’t Get Next To You” all work with the Temptations, already one of achieved platinum certification in America for Motown's elite groups. -

WRITING ASSIGNMENT Record Review You are going to write a record review of an album that is deemed significant in Rock Music. A list of groups/artists can be accessed by clicking on link below http://www.rollingstone.com/ news/story/5938174/the_rs_500_greatest_albums_of_all_time Criteria: Title Page Name, word count, course number, section number, etc. Introduction: Write a biography of the group you're critiquing. This should include the year the group/artist began recording, a list of and year of recordings, billboard chart positions, and any awards, Grammys, etc. www.allmusic.com is a great source for biographical information. Section 1 You will need to include all of the specifics of the recording, record label, producer(s), year, and dates of recording. Listen to the album several times as if you were a record critic and write an overview of the album, i.e. style of music, mood, highlights, lowlights, etc. Here are some things to consider: Is there a unifying theme throughout the album? Are there contrasting themes? If so, what are they? Is there enough variety musically in your opinion? What is it about this album in particular that makes it stand out? Section 2 Pick four songs and discuss them in more detail. Discuss your likes and dislikes as we have in relation to the journal entries in class but you will need to go into more detail. Discuss any other elements you find compelling, i.e., imagery from the lyrics or lack thereof, the use of and/or role of instrumentation, tempos, solos, vocals, etc. Section 3 Summarize your experience. -

Ruth Frankel Professor Swedberg CAS WS214 May 2, 2013 Carole King: A Consequential Female Artist in Achievement and Message Carole King, a Brooklyn born singersongwriter, most associated with the music of the 1960s and 1970s, is significant in that she, according to her biographer James Perone, “almost singlehandedly opened the doors of popular music songwriting to women” (1). She also became the first female artist in American popular music in complete control of her own work. Her writing was prolific. She has written 500 copyrighted songs throughout her career and has had tremendous commercial success (Havranek 236). King’s greatest success was the release of the 1973 album Tapestry, which remained on the charts for 302 weeks (Perone 6). Though her cultural impact is often underappreciated, Carole King has been an important contributor to advancement of women in the music industry and a positive role model to the female audiences of her generation. It is even hard to find academic sources reflecting the success and cultural attributions of King. Overall, it appears that sexism has faded the memory of Carole King’s contribution to women in music. Again and again, King impact has not been recognized or remembered. For example, in the book Go, Girl, Go!: The Women’s Revolution in Music by James Dickerson, King’s name is mentioned only once. Dickerson writes, “Carly Simon and Carole King were the two most successful singersongwriters of the decade, and of the two, it was Carly who was dazzling the world with her toothy smile and sexy album covers” (77).
