Publication Series of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna Eva Blimlinger, Andrea B. Braidt, Karin Riegler (Series Eds.) VOLUME 21 On the Publication Series We are pleased to present the latest volume in the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna’s publication series. The series, published in cooperation with our highly com- mitted partner Sternberg Press, is devoted to central themes of contemporary thought about art practices and theories. The volumes comprise contribu- tions on subjects that form the focus of discourse in art theory, cultural studies, art history, and research at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and represent the quintessence of international study and discussion taking place in the respective fields. Each volume is published in the form of an anthology, edited by staff members of the academy. Authors of high international repute are invited to make contributions that deal with the respective areas of emphasis. Research activities such as international conferences, lecture series, institute- specific research focuses, or research projects serve as points of departure for the individual volumes. All books in the series undergo a single blind peer review. International re- viewers, whose identities are not disclosed to the editors of the volumes, give an in-depth analysis and evaluation for each essay. The editors then rework the texts, taking into consideration the suggestions and feedback of the reviewers who, in a second step, make further comments on the revised essays.

Welcome to the 31st annual Washington, Dc international Film Festival. come see great movies! 80 fi lms • 45 countries • 11 days • 1 exciting festival For over 30 years, Filmfest DC has sought to keeP pace with global cultural and social activities. Today we fi nd ourselves in a conundrum of opposing beliefs and shifting governmental policies, which have often divided citizens and forged a culture of “us vs. them.” As a refl ection of our times, this year’s festival has taken on a special focus on issues ripped from today’s headlines in hopes of increasing clarity and civil discourse. Our Opening Night feature, This Is Our Land, looks at what can happen when a community faced with new immigrants and threatened job security becomes the target of right-wing operatives. The Justice Matters section of social issues fi lms has been expanded and this year we have added Division & Debate, a new section exploring timely contentious issues. The Lighter Side section of international comedies, Trust No One, our thriller and espionage section and the Global Rhythms music series continue to be festival staples, along with World View, the core of the festival’s international program. Filmfest DC would not be possible without the support of our Board of Directors, sponsors, staff, and hundreds of volunteers. Many people have generously shared their time and talent with us, and we want to deeply thank them. Good movies make the world a better place. Please join us for debut works by gifted directors, and a broad array of award-winning fi lms from around the globe.

NEW EASTERN EUROPE IS A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT BETWEEN THREE POLISH PARTNERS The City of Gdańsk www.gdansk.pl A city with over a thousand years of history, Gdańsk has been a melting pot of cultures and ethnic groups. The air of tolerance and wealth built on trade has enabled culture, science, and the arts to fl ourish in the city for centuries. Today, Gdańsk remains a key meeting place and major tourist attraction in Poland. While the city boasts historic sites of enchanting beauty, it also has a major historic and social importance. In addition to its 1000-year history, the city is the place where the Second World War broke out as well as the birthplace of Solidarność, the Solidarity movement, which led to the fall of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe. The European Solidarity Centre www.ecs.gda.pl The European Solidarity Centre is a multifunctional institution combining scientifi c, cultural and educational activities with a modern museum and archive, which documents freedom movements in the modern history of Poland and Europe. Hale Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of African, French, and Comparative Literature Head of the Department of French and Francophone Studies Bénédicte Monicat Associate Professor of French and Women’s Studies Sanford Schwartz Associate Professor of English Monique Yaari Associate Professor of French *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT This dissertation aims to study four recent films by French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard. Although most of Godard's early work of the 60s and 70s has received considerable attention from researchers, fewer studies focus on his more recent films such as Nouvelle vague (1990), JLG/JLG: Autoportrait de décembre (1994), For Ever Mozart (1996) and Éloge de l’amour (2000). Several scholars have made observations stating that Godard’s later work is very contemplative. Others opine that this body of work concentrates more on the notion of beauty, and still others see Godard’s later work as distinct from his earlier work, especially with respect to its content. Although I agree with observations stating that Godard’s later work is much more self-reflective and contemplative than his earlier work, I would not agree with those who see it as being distinct in content or being in a ‘consistent digression’ because of this.

  • Fallen 1914 - 1918
THE FALLEN 1914 - 1918 part one alkerton by Alistair Cook for The Shenington Green How “The Fallen” came to be he author of The Fallen is Alistair Cook of Tysoe Hill Cottage in Shenington. When former Shenington Green editor Carole Young appealed for information on the eight men named on the Alkerton war memorial, Alistair, a confirmed ‘non-historian,’ decided to pursue a fascination Tcultivated over long dog walks: namely, the lost stories behind the many names engraved on the large chunks of stone that take pride of place in our local villages. The Fallen follows a template developed for the stories of Epwell’s soldiers killed in the wars, compiled by local historian Eric Kaye, who also wrote the story of the Edgehill airfield. In tracing ‘our’ men, the first task was to find their respective regimental details and where they are buried. From that, Alistair was able to find out what they had done, where they lived and the actions that took place on or around the dates they fell.
