SARAJEVO WASTE WATER PROJECT Key Dates: Approved: December 22, 2009 Effective: July 15, 2010 Closing: November 30, 2015 Financing in million US Dollars:* Financier Financing Public Disclosure Authorized IBRD Loan 35.0 Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina 2.0 Total Project Cost 37.0 World Bank Disbursements, million US Dollars*: Total Disbursed Undisbursed IBRD Loan 35.0 1.19 33.73 * as of January, 2011. Note: Disbursements may differ from financing due to exchange rate fluctuations at the time of disbursement. Service delivery problems in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH) are compounded by the lingering after-effects of the conflict Public Disclosure Authorized that left vast portions of basic infrastructure destroyed or severely damaged. A case that vividly illustrates the problem is waste water collection and treatment in the city of Sarajevo. A Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) was built close to the confluence of the Miljacka and Bosna Rivers in the early 1980s on the occasion of the 1984 Winter Olympics. Construction of the plant was supported by the World Bank-financed Sarajevo Water Supply and Sewerage Project (Loan 1263-YU), which closed in December 1982. However, the plant was extensively damaged in the spring of 1992 at the outset of the conflict, during which the sewer network was also destroyed in various places. Since the end of the conflict in 1995, the WWTP has been largely out of commission with only minimal conservation works carried out to prevent further deterioration. As a result, virtually all of the city‟s waste water is discharged into the Miljacka and Bosna Rivers without any treatment, causing severe pollution of the rivers and impacting the communities downstream of the discharge point. -

MEMORY, SPACE & LAW MEMORY SITES OF THE 1992-1995 WAR IN PRESENT DAY BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA AND THE INTEGRATION OF THE ICTY LEGACY. Scientific article Word count: 9.485 Aurore Vanliefde Student number: 01708804 Promotor: Dr. David Mwambari Master’s thesis presented for obtaining the degree of Master in Conflict and Development Academic year: 2018-2019 MEMORY, SPACE & LAW. MEMORY SITES OF THE 1992-1995 WAR IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA AND THE INTEGRATION OF THE ICTY LEGACY. Abstract This article revolves around memorialisation of the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). Theoretical insights from literature are combined with empirical data from 29 memory sites in BiH, two expert interviews, and additional information from informal conversations with guides and participation in guided tours. The aim of this study is to understand the use of memory sites of the 1992-1995 war in BiH, and research the extent to which the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)’s legacy has been integrated into these memory sites. The findings show that memorialisation is on-going through the creation, conservation, accentuation and destruction of memory sites. Memorials are generally exclusively meant for one ethno-national group, and are often the product of local and/or private initiatives. These sites of memory are lieux de mémoire, as described by Pierre Nora, where a community’s collective memory is both materialised and generated. Personal testimonies are extensively used in museums and archival material from the ICTY is included in some memory sites. The ICTY’s legacy constitutes a unique kind of memory, a lieu de mémoire sui generis. -

Polygon“, „Pašin Brdo“ Und „Vra[T]Ca“
Austrian Society for Fortification Research - OeGF Stated Destruction of Austro-Hungarian Fortification around the City of Sarajevo with a Focus on the Objects „Polygon“, „Pašin brdo“ und „Vra[t]ca“. The aim of this report is to give an overview about the very negative development regarding the state of preservation of Austro‐Hungarian fortification around the city of Sarajevo. The site inspection of the forts Polygon, Pasin brdo and Vratca on the 11th respectively 12th of October this year and the disover of evident loss of substance lead the author to write this report. The survey of fort Vraca was done during an excursion that was part of the symposium „Civil‐military Cooperation regarding Cultural Property Protection in Crisis Response and its aftermath“. All the mentioned objects have been surveyed by the author in the year 2011, some of them in 2013 as well. Further on, documentations done by fortification experts from Germany (2018), Slovenia (2014) and the Netherlands (2009/10) could be analysed for this report. Among those three objects only fort Vratca – as part of the „Spomen‐Park Vraca“ ‐ is listed as national monument (BiH). [former] Fort N° IV „Pasin brdo“ Mountain fort partly with armor of a type designed especially for the protection of the capital Sarajevo. In fact this type of forts was realized only around this city. It was built between 1888 and 1889 as the first of the four "major girdle‐forts" and formed the northeastern cornerstone of the defensive belt. It is an early example of an armored fortification built by the former Habsburg Monarchy and one of only five forts in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which included an armored battery. -

Film Forum Sarajevo Looks at How to Boost the Presence of European Films in South-Eastern Europe
Film Forum Sarajevo looks at how to boost the presence of European films in south-eastern Europe The south-eastern European film sector is vital and growing, with remarkable creative talents emerging every year. Five films which have received EU investment are in the competition at this year's Sarajevo Film festival. Meanwhile, a recent report shows that up to 90 percent of cinema admissions in Romania and Bulgaria come from US films. A European Film Forum event will explore how the Creative Europe MEDIA programme can help European films reach audiences in south- eastern Europe. European Film Forum event Countries in south-eastern Europe and the Balkans have suffered a significant loss of cinema theatres since the fall of communism. At the moment private companies are building more and more multiplexes in the region, but with little room for European films. The independent sector is still small, but it is vital and growing. How to help European films reach audiences in this region will be one of the main topics of the European Film forum at the Sarajevo Film Festival August 20th to 21st this year. The Sarajevo Film Festival is the most important film festival in the region and gathers a growing number of professionals and a large audience. At the Film Forum event, experts from the region and the rest of Europe will be looking closer at the recent exciting developments in the south-eastern European cinema sector, and on co-production across the borders in a borderless digital world. A first panel will look at cinema exhibition sector, opportunities and challenges in south-eastern Europe.
