INTERVIEW 6 [Note: This interview was not edited by Ambassador Galbraith.] Q: Today is March 19, 1999. This is an interview with Ambassador Peter W. Galbraith, that’s G.A./.0.1.A.I.T.2. The interview is being done on behalf of the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training and I-m Charles Stuart Kennedy. ,ell, to begin with, could you tell me where you were born and then let-s tal4 about your family and growing up5 7ALBRAITH4 Okay. I as born December 31, 1.00 at the Boston Lying1in Hospital in Boston. My parents are John :enneth 7albraith, thatAs my father and :atherine At ater 7albraith is my mother. My father as born in ,anada and gre up there on a farm and came to the United States in 1.2.. He had gotten his degree at the Ontario Agricultural ,ollege in agricultural economics. He ent to the University of ,alifornia at Berkeley and had cultural economics and 8uickly finished up his Ph.D. in 1.33 hen the Roosevelt administration came in and there ere all of a sudden jobs. He came to Washington and ent through the security clearance. At the time that ould have consisted of going up and seeing the postmaster general Jim Farley ho didnAt ask if he as an American citizen because he asnAt, but only if he as a democrat, hich he said he as. He served in the Roosevelt administration and as eventually in charge of the office of price administration and then fired, an economist, noted riter and adviser to democratic presidents and presidential candidates. I mean I want to go to the source of power. 7ALBRAITH4 My great grandfather, her grandfather, Wilbur Olin At ater, as a noted American scientist at Wesleyan University and he actually as the person ho invented the calorie, but ait, not invented the calorie, invented the calorimeter, the ability to measure the calorie. My grandfather At ater as a la yer, he died, all my grandparents died before I as born and my mother as the eldest of three children born in 1.12. She had a scholarship at Smith and studied French and 7erman literature. She spent her junior year abroad in 7ermany at the beginning of the Nazi period and she has many onderful stories including being in the same omenAs dormitory as Unity Mitford hen Adolf Hitler ould come and call. *: So, these are the famous British Mitford sisters5 7 7ALBRAITH4 E(actly. *: 8essica, 9nity. 9nity was the Na:i one, wasn-t she5 7ALBRAITH4 She had had apparently a romantic relationship ith Hitler and opposed the ar bet een 7ermany and England, but I donAt think she as a Nazi and she put a bullet in her head and lived for a long time in a semi comatose state. Anyho , my parents met at Harvard here my father as an instructor and my mother as orking to ard her Ph.D. as as typical in those days, didnAt get. *: ,hat was her Ph.D. in5 7ALBRAITH4 It as going to be in, it as in comparative literature, comparing a French and 7erman riter, IAm not sure hich ones. One ho as born in 1.41 and ho is a la yer here in Washington, a partner at Williams and ,onnolly and a brother ho is a year younger ho is a professor of economics at the University of Te(as at the LBJ School and ho orked here in Washington as the staff director of a ,ongressional ,ommittee. *: Can you tal4 a bit about home life and you 4now, I mean, here you've had two sort of intellectual powerhouses, what was it li4e at home, particularly when you were a small 4id5 7ALBRAITH4 Well, it as a very stable upbringing. My parents lived in the same house that they still live in. They bought it in ,ambridge three days after I as born, a big brick house. The household had a stream of political figures, Roy Jenkins of Britain' various Americans, Adlai Stevenson, John F. :ennedy and that ould have been hen I as little. Then of course the generations that follo ed in the JI0s and J70s, Pat Moynihan and later generations. Almost invariably the discussions, the dinner table discussions dealt ith public affairs, politics, and international affairs. I donAt think it ever occurred to me that people ouldnAt talk about such things at dinner. My parents ere fairly traditional and their children ere not al ays at the dinner table. Professor Peter Angelov, the renowned medievalist from Sofia University “St. Clement of Ohrid,” has published a new book, Foreign Peoples as Viewed by a Medieval Bulgarian, following the path laid out in his previous works on images of Bulgaria and Bulgarians in Byzantium and on medieval Bulgarian diplomacy [Angelov 1999; idem 2011]. His new research uncovers unexplored perspectives provided by an imagological approach to the study of the Bulgarian mind during the Middle Ages, and he raises new questions about the rare written, iconographical, and folklore evidence that originated in both domest ic and foreign sources. Angelov chooses as his subjects those who differ from Bul garians by faith (for example, Judaists and Catholics) and by the polities to which they belonged (for example, Byzantines or Westerners, who, in medieval Bulgaria, were called Franks or Latins). Depending on the circumstances, members of each of these groups might be considered by the medieval Bulgarian state and society as insiders or outsiders. Proving that this situation to some extent was rooted in the regional specifics of Bulgaria, Angelov quotes the evidence of writings by Demetrios Chomatenos, arch­ bishop of Bulgaria (1216–1236), which state that the territory of his diocese, with its see in Ohrid, “from ancient times was allowed to be inhabited by peoples of other faiths and by different pagans, namely Jews, Armenians, Ishmaelites, Hagarians, etc.” (p.

Where its content ends my context begins, but neither truly begin or end, simply intertwine. Anybody can read my dissertation manuscript and understand the poems, but somebody with more knowledge of Eastern Europe’s historical, linguistic, artistic, and poetic contexts will, with hope, find even more joy in all its darkness. It is an Eastern European tradition to find joy in darkness. It is one that arose out of necessity and in turn flourished as a kind of mindset. This mindset comes through in the psyche of the inhabitants of the Late Cold War period, particularly those living in the United States, the Soviet Union, and its Satellite Nations.

Articles & Testimony he northern front was supposed to have been occupied by tens of thousands of U.S. troops who would make up T the second front of a pincer movement against Baghdad. But Turkey's refusal to allow American forces and heavy armor to cross the Turkish-Iraqi frontier means that only a few thousand moderately armed allied soldiers are now engaging Saddam Hussein's troops in the north. And fighting along side the allies are lightly armed Kurdish forces. Although the revised allied campaign in the north has been successful, many analysts believe that the original plan might have backfired. While there's little doubt that American tanks rolling across northern Iraq toward Baghdad would shorten the war, it also might have opened the door for Turkey to send large numbers of troops into Kurdish- controlled territory -- igniting a conflict between Turks and Kurds. "I guess we have everything to be thankful for the fact all hell did not break lose in the north," says Charles Pena, Director of Defense Policy Studies at the Cato Institute here in Washington. "The Turks showed some restraint and did not come across the border, really in large numbers. And the Kurds did likewise show restraint. So that, combined with the fact that the Iraqi forces in the north don't seem very interested in engaging in offensive operations means that the north has stayed relatively stable.

Although the territory of today´s Moravia (eastern part of the Czech Republic) and Slovakia came into contact with Christianity already at the end of antiquity, the more intensive Christianization of these lands took place only from the 8th century, when this territory was settled by Slavs. Mis- sionaries from the Frankish Empire, from the territory of Istria, Dalmatia and northern Italy came here. Domestic Slavic elites started to convert to Christian- ity as from the 9th century. For them, Christianity became a means of recogniz- ing their social status externally and allowed them to integrate with the more culturally advanced Christian world. Archaeological findings (e.g. crosses and captorgs, plaques and bells from Bojná, objects of secular character), written sources, sacral architecture and burying methods testify to the existence of Christianity in the territory of today´s Moravia and Slovakia, especially in cen- ters of the power. Developed by Echo student interns, this curriculum guide offers educators and students alike a user-friendly tool with which to understand global atrocities, as well as what we, as a nation and as individuals, can do to stop them. The Echo Foundation offers these resource materials and collection of essays as an inspiration to you who shape the next generation.     Washington, DC June 1, 2016 Dear Mr. President, We are writing, as Americans committed to the success of our country’s Afghanistan mission, to urge that you sustain the current level of U.S. forces in Afghanistan through the remainder of your term. Aid levels and diplomatic energies should similarly be preserved without reduction. Unless emergency conditions require consideration of a modest increase, we would strongly favor a freeze at the level of roughly 10,000 U.S. troops through January 20. This approach would also allow your successor to assess the situation for herself or himself and make further adjustments accordingly. The broader Middle East is roiled in conflicts that pit moderate and progressive forces against those of violent extremists. As we saw on 9/11 and in the recent attacks in Paris, San Bernardino, and Brussels, the problems of the Middle East do not remain contained within the Middle East. Afghanistan is the place where al Qaeda and affiliates first planned the 9/11 attacks and a place where they continue to operate—and is thus important in the broader effort to defeat the global extremist movement today. It is a place where al Qaeda and ISIS still have modest footprints that could be expanded if a security vacuum developed. If Afghanistan were to revert to the chaos of the 1990s, millions of refugees would again seek shelter in neighboring countries and overseas, dramatically intensifying the severe challenges already faced in Europe and beyond. In the long-term struggle against violent extremists, the United States above all needs allies—not only to fight a common enemy, but also to create a positive vision for the peoples of the region.

As we see the deterioration of the institutions created and fostered after the Second World War to create a climate in which peace and prosperity could flourish in Europe and beyond, it is important to understand the role played by diplomacy in securing the stability and strengthening the shared values of freedom and democracy that have marked this era for the nations of the world. It is most instructive to read the Inaugural Address of President John F. Kennedy, in which he encouraged Americans not only to do good things for their own country, but to do good things in the world. The creation of the Peace Corps is an example of the kind of spirit that put young American volunteers into some of the poorest nations in an effort to improve the standard of living for people around the globe. We knew we were leaders; we knew that we had many political and economic and social advantages. There was an impetus to share this wealth. Generosity, not greed, was the motivation of that generation. Of course, this did not begin with Kennedy. It was preceded by the Marshall Plan, one of the only times in history that the conqueror decided to rebuild the country of the vanquished foe.
