Although the territory of today´s Moravia (eastern part of the Czech Republic) and Slovakia came into contact with Christianity already at the end of antiquity, the more intensive Christianization of these lands took place only from the 8th century, when this territory was settled by Slavs. Mis- sionaries from the Frankish Empire, from the territory of Istria, Dalmatia and northern Italy came here. Domestic Slavic elites started to convert to Christian- ity as from the 9th century. For them, Christianity became a means of recogniz- ing their social status externally and allowed them to integrate with the more culturally advanced Christian world. Archaeological findings (e.g. crosses and captorgs, plaques and bells from Bojná, objects of secular character), written sources, sacral architecture and burying methods testify to the existence of Christianity in the territory of today´s Moravia and Slovakia, especially in cen- ters of the power. Introduction Since the sixth century, the Bulgars had known intermittent contact with the Christians of the surrounding nations, whether as merchants or prisoners-of-war or through diplomatic relations. During the later eighth and early ninth century, the Christian population in Bulgar lands increased so much that Christians were rumored to have influence at the court of Khan Krum (802-814); they were also persecuted under Khan Omortag (814-31). The Bulgars continued to remain "officially" pagan until the reign of Khan Boris, who came to power around 852. Several factors may have led Khan Boris to assume a more favorable attitude towards Christianity. First, Christianity offered a belief-system that transcended — at least potentially — cultural or ethnic boundaries and thereby offered a means not only to unify Bulgaria's disparate populations but also to secure legitimacy and respect with Byzantium and the West. The ideology of Christian rulership also enhanced the position of the prince vis-à-vis his subjects including the often contentious boyars. Furthermore, Boris' sister had converted to Christianity while a hostage in Constantinople and may have influenced her brother. Finally, Boris himself seems to have been attracted to Christian beliefs and practices, as evidenced by the seriousness with which he pursued the conversion of his people. Boris' move towards Christianity seems to have begun in earnest with the opening of negotiations in 862 between himself and Louis the German for an alliance against Ratislav of Moravia. -

Introduction On July 26, 2005, His Eminence Jovan, Archbishop of Ohrid and Metropolitan of Skopje, began serving a two-and-a-half year prison sentence in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).2 A month earlier a court of appeals had upheld a lower court ruling that had found him guilty of “inciting national, racial and religious hatred, schism and intolerance.” In reality the government has imprisoned him for entering into communion with the Orthodox Church. According to the Orthodox Archbishopric of Ohrid website, Archbishop Jovan is “the only confessor of the faith who, in modern Europe, has been convicted and put in prison because of his religious beliefs.” 2. The Region of Macedonia The present Republic of Macedonia covers about a third of the historical region of Macedonia. Situated in the south central part of the Balkan Peninsula, the historical region extends into Greece, Albania and Bulgaria. A number of ancient kingdoms and former empires controlled the lands now known as the Republic of Macedonia. These included the realm of Paionia, the ancient Macedonian kingdom, the Roman and Byzantine Empires, Serbia, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. In the fourth century BC, the region came to dominate the Greek city states and, eventually, an area that reached Persia, Egypt and India. -

He was constantly impressed with the fact that all too little attention has been paid hither to to the subject even by scholars of the Balkan nations, not to speak of non-Slavic historians; consequently, much preliminary pioneering work had to be done. Much yet remains to be accomplished; but the restricted scope of this undertaking as well as the paucity of source material per taining to the early history of the Balkan peninsula com bined to make the treatment actually adopted expedient. In gathering his material, the author spent some time during the summer of 1931 in the Balkans. -

Between Old and New Rome
Jonas Thungren Lindbärg “A burdensome matter it is today to abandon the delicate and subtle customs of the Latin people, i.e. the Franks, and to return to the Between Old and New Rome dullness of the old Armenians.” Thus wrote the Armenian archbishop Nerses, not without a hint of Armenian and Bulgarian Contacts with the Papacy around 1204 sarcasm, when defending his endeavour to unite the Armenian Church with the Roman in the late twelfth century. What this old dullness was is less clear but it seems that Latin customs had indeed become both Jonas Thungren Lindbärg desirable and powerful, for this ecumenical endeavour met with success and only a handful of years later something similar occured in the Between Old and New Rome Old and New Between Balkans, when a newly founded Bulgarian empire submitted to the Roman Church as well. The rulers of these realms would not only profess their loyalty to the Roman Church but would also carry papal banners into battle and exchange letters with the pope. This study examines how these rulers used their relationships with the Papacy, as well as how the pope used his relationship with them. It is a study of ideas and of symbolic power, of how kingdoms and empires were imagined and expressed. It is a study of the new and the old, of two new power-centres emerging from the old peripheries of the crumbling Byzantine Empire, of leaders weaving together real and imagined histories with new influences in order to establish and profess their legitimate rule. WHAT IS A POPE? The offi ce occupied by the pope is known as the papacy. The pope’s principal title is Bishop of Rome. It is called the Petrine min- istry, because the Catholic Church considers the pope to be the successor of the Apostle Peter. The Byzantine Emperor and church officials worked closely together. 2. Byzantines believed the emperor was God’s representative on Earth. a) Beginning 400s C.E., emperors were crowned in a religious ceremony. b) They took an oath to defend the Eastern Orthodox Christianity. c) Emperors believed it was their duty to unite the empire under one Christian faith. d) Emperors appointed church leaders and defined how people would worship. e) They also controlled the wealth and settled disputes about church beliefs. B. What are Icons? 1. In 700s C.E., heated dispute about icons divided the Eastern Orthodox Church a) Icons are painting of Jesus, Mary (the mother of Jesus), and the saints or Christian holy people. 2. Byzantines displayed icons in their homes a) Believed the images symbolized the presence of God. b) Images helped people understand Christianity teachings. 3. Churches covered walls with icons. 4. Some Byzantines, did not approve of the use of icons. a) Thought it was a form of idol worship which is forbidden by God. 5. In 756 C.E., Emperor Leo III ordered all icons to be removed from the churches. a) Government official that carried out the orders were called “iconoclasts” meaning image breakers. b) Today the word refers to someone who criticizes traditional beliefs or practices. -

The Origins of the Byzantine Empire: Anachronism and Evolution in Modern Historiography Joseph D. Wagner Introduction The modern understanding of the Byzantine Empire, the Roman Empire, which survived in Eastern Europe for over a thousand years, is a fallacy. There is no doubt that the Byzantines existed or that their empire occupied a place in the pantheon of world power. The issue under consideration is not so much when the Byzantine Empire began, but rather when this evolution of the Roman Empire first took place and how modern scholars view Byzantine origins. The term Byzantine Empire is an anachronism because what modern historiography calls “the Byzantines” never existed. Rather, these people considered themselves Roman even until the collapse of their empire in 1453 CE. This is relevant in today’s historiography for many reasons, among them because the Byzantine have not been studied with as much vigor as compared to their Greek and Roman ancestors. This is also an important historical issue because of a recent book detailing how the Byzantines dealt with their neighbors over the centuries. Edward Luttwak, a former political advisor and Johns Hopkins-trained historian, argued in his 2009 book The Grand Strategy of the Byzantine Empire that the Byzantines were skilled diplomats, using money and land transfers to keep invading armies at bay.279 Luttwak proceeded to question whether these same strategies could be applied elsewhere; for example, in the United States. There are three schools of thought that rise from the relevant historiography: The Continuity School, the Discontinuity School, and the Evolution School. All three schools of thought will be discussed with due reference to their authors after an explanation of methodology. -

Jaspert, Historisches Seminar, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg DRAWING BOUNDARIES: INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION IN MEDIEVAL ISLAMIC SOCIETIES (Language: English) Eduardo Manzano Moreno, Instituto de Historia, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Madrid Introduction: Hans-Werner Goetz, Historisches Seminar, Universität Hamburg Details: ‘The Mediterranean Other and the Other Mediterranean: Perspective of Alterity in the Middle Ages’: For many decades, the medieval Mediterranean has repeatedly been put to use in order to address, understand, or explain current issues. Lately, it tends to be seen either as an epitome of transcultural entanglements or - quite on the contrary - as an area of endemic religious conflict. In this paper, I would like to reflect on such readings of the Mediterranean and relate them to several approaches within a dynamic field of historical research referred to as ‘xenology’. I will therefore discuss different modalities of constructing self and otherness in the central and western Mediterranean during the High and Late Middle Ages. The multiple forms of interaction between politically dominant and subaltern religious communities or the conceptual challenges posed by trans-Mediterranean mobility are but two of the vibrant arenas in which alterity was necessarily both negotiated and formed during the medieval millennium. Otherness is however not reduced to the sphere of social and thus human relations. I will therefore also reflect on medieval societies’ dealings with the Mediterranean Sea as a physical and oftentimes alien space.
