Journal of Arts & Humanities Volume 09, Issue 10, 2020: 11-28 Article Received: 04-05-2020 Accepted: 25-10-2020 Available Online: 30-10-2020 ISSN: 2167-9045 (Print), 2167-9053 (Online) DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.18533/jah.v9i10.1923 Ecology of Pressures and Linguistic Vitality of the Yoremnokki Language in Sinaloa Ernesto Guerra García1, Pedro Antonio López de Haro2, Rodolfo Real Audeves3 ABSTRACT The study of endangered languages is still of great importance, however, on one hand, the methods of analysis aren’t always presented in an integrated or holistic manner, and on the other hand, the languages aren’t always available to be studied; this is the case for the yoremnokki language in the northwest of Mexico, for which a holistic study is presented using UNESCO’s linguistic vitality and ecology of pressures. The linguistic shift of the yoremnokki language is a fact; to study this phenomenon, an ethnographic study was carried out in 2019 in the North of Sinaloa, Mexico in the yoreme mayo region. We found that there are more factors for the displacement of the yoremnokki language than there are for its maintenance. The centennial restriction generational transmission is one of the factors that most influence the movement of the linguistic yoremnokki; although the yoreme mayo population grew from 1985 to date, in proportion to the total population, it is decreasing. There are fewer and fewer spaces in their domain; the last refuge is that of festivals and rituals. New spaces have been opened, radio, telephones, internet and higher education, but they are limited. -

Symbol of Conquest, Alliance, and Hegemony
SYMBOL OF CONQUEST, ALLIANCE, AND HEGEMONY: THE IMAGE OF THE CROSS IN COLONIAL MEXICO by ZACHARY WINGERD Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Arlington in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON August 2008 Copyright © by Zachary Wingerd 2008 All Rights Reserved ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I offer thanks to Dr. Dennis Reinhartz, Dr. Kenneth Philp, Dr. Richard Francaviglia, and Dr. Joseph Bastien who agreed to sit on my dissertation committee and guide my research and writing. Special thanks are given to Dr. Douglas Richmond who encouraged my topic from the very beginning and as the committee chair actively supported my endeavor. May 1, 2008 iii DEDICATED TO MY LOVING WIFE AND SONS Lindsey, Josh, and Jamie iv ABSTRACT SYMBOL OF CONQUEST, ALLIANCE, AND HEGEMONY: THE IMAGE OF THE CROSS IN COLONIAL MEXICO Zachary Wingerd, PhD. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2008 Supervising Professor: Douglas Richmond The universality of the cross image within the transatlantic confrontation meant not only a hegemony of culture, but of symbolism. The symbol of the cross existed in both European and American societies hundreds of years before Columbus. In both cultures, the cross was integral in religious ceremony, priestly decoration, and cosmic maps. As a symbol of life and death, of human and divine suffering, of religious and political acquiescence, no other image in transatlantic history has held such a perennial, powerful message as the cross. For colonial Mexico, which felt the brunt of Spanish initiative, the symbol of the cross penetrated the autochthonous culture out of which the independent nation and indigenous church were born. -
Yaqui People 1
The Yaqui People 1. Description 1.1 Name of society, language, and language family: Society: Yaqui people, Language: Yaqui, Language family: Uto-Aztecan>Taracahitic>Cahita>Yaqui 1.2 ISO code (3 letter code from ethnologue.com): YAQ 1.3 Location (latitude/longitude): Along the Rio Yaqui. The Rio Yaqui's location is 29° 8' (29.133333°) north latitude, 109° 30' (109.5°) as well as in costal areas of Sonora (29°38′46″N 110°52′08″W) and Sinaloa (25°0′10″N 107°30′10″W) 1.4 Brief history: Battled with the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. While they were never conquered by military means they were intrigued by white people’s material culture and quickly adopted Christianity when it was spread to them by Jesuit missionaries. When the Jesuits were ordered out of the area by the Spanish colonial government the Yaqui were left without religious leadership which in turn led to the “Yaqui Wars”. Attempts were made to unite the Yaqui people with other tribes against the Mexican government but all failed. In 1964 the US government gave the Yaqui 202 acres near Tuscon and formally recognized the Yaqui based on this land on September 18, 1978. 1.5 Influence of missionaries/schools/governments/powerful neighbors: In 1617 Jesuit missionaries began to work among the Yaqui. The Yaquis seemed to be impressed with Jesuit bringing a message of everlasting life, the Jesuits impressed the Yaquis with their good intentions and their spirituality. Their concern for the well-being of the Indians won the confidence of the Yaqui people. -

Los Carnavales En México. Teatralidades De La Fiesta Popular Conditions, and Circumstances Concerning Community Involvement in the Celebration
