  • Convergent Evolution of Boats with Sails A
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Convergent Evolution of Boats with Sails A. Bejan1*, L. Ferber2 & S. Lorente3 This article unveils the geometric characteristics of boats with sails of many sizes, covering the range 102–105 kg. Data from one hundred boat models are collected and tabulated. The data show distinct trends of convergent evolution across the entire range of sizes, namely: (i) the proportionality between beam and draft, (ii) the proportionality between overall boat length and beam, and (iii) the proportionality between mast height and overall boat length. The review shows that the geometric aspect ratios (i)–(iii) are predictable from the physics of evolution toward architectures that ofer greater fow access through the medium. Nature impresses us with images, changes and tendencies that repeat themselves innumerable times even though “similar observations” are not identical to each other. In science, we recognize each ubiquitous tendency as a distinct phenomenon. Over the centuries, our predecessors have summarized each distinct phenomenon with its own law of physics, which then serves as a ‘frst principle’ in the edifce of science. A principle is a ‘frst principle’ when it cannot be deduced from other frst principles. Tis aspect of organization in science is illustrated by the evolution of thermodynamics to its current state1,2. For example, 150 years ago the transformation of potential energy into kinetic energy and the conservation of “caloric” were fused into one statement—the frst law of thermodynamics—which now serves as a frst-principle in physics. It was the same with another distinct tendency in nature: everything fows (by itself) from high to low.

Boats came from Annapolis to Maine. Organizers Bill Rothwell, Steve Braver- man, Linda Epstein, and Dave Nelson did a terrific job putting a fun weekend together. Unfortunately the weather on Sat did not cooperate forcing the cancellation of all racing due to winds gusting into the 30’s. Many thanks to CPYC for opening the bowling alleys, pool ta- bles and darts to keep the sailors occupied during the postponements. Sunday brought a beautiful day with lighter winds allowing the race committee to get in 10 races. Thanks go to the many CPYCers who worked the race committee, and lent their boats to the regatta. Racing was extremely close with less than a second between boats at the finish on numerous occasions. The regatta was won by Ted Ferra- rone and Meredith Killon, 2nd Stephen Benjamin and Brooks Davey, 3rd Paul-Jon Patin and Felicity Ryan, 4th Art and Jennifer Rousma- niere, 5th Jim Bowers and Lydia Brown. • Strongest Selection of Maritime Art in Ten Years on Sale at Christie’S New York
For Immediate Release November 14, 2008 Contact: Erin McAndrew 212.636.2680 [email protected] STRONGEST SELECTION OF MARITIME ART IN TEN YEARS ON SALE AT CHRISTIE’S NEW YORK New York – Christie’s New York is pleased to announce details of its December 3 auction of Maritime paintings. The sale boasts over 138 paintings and features exceptional works from 19th century American artists James Edward Buttersworth and Edward Moran, as well as a superb group of fourteen oils and watercolors by 20th century British artist Montague Dawson. Many of the paintings to be offered have never before appeared on the market. The December 3 auction is the first since Christie’s created a paintings-only category for Maritime Art and incorporated it into the same week as its Sporting Art and American Paintings sales in New York. A Maritime Objects Sale, including nautical antiques, scrimshaw, and ship models is slated for January 15, 2009. Images of yachts, battleships, clipper ships, whalers, and modern-day frigates are all featured in the upcoming auction. For devotees of historical maritime battles, a sale highlight is a grouping of master works by Montague Dawson, including American brig Argus engaging His Majesty’s sloop Pelican in British Waters, 14th August 1813 (detail view pictured on page 1 – left). Dawson skillfully captures the moment when the British and American ships drew aside one other in a full-on firefight, and mercilessly shredded each other’s sails with gunfire (estimate: $200,000-300,000). The Dawson grouping also includes seven watercolor paintings making a rare appearance at auction.

  • History America's Cup & J-Class
h i s t o r y America’s Cup & J-Class The tradition of America’s Cup races began in 1851 when the schooner America defeated 15 British yachts to win the Round the Island Race in Cowes. Between then and the Second World War, races for the America’s Cup were held on 16 occasions. Leading businessmen such as Sir Thomas Lipton, Thomas Sopwith and Harold S. Vanderbilt went to extremes and spent huge sums of money in order to try and win the ornate trophy known affectionately as the Old Mug. Those who succeeded took on the role of defender, waiting until the other J-Classers determined who would be the next challenger.
