(617) 846-CPYC Web site: www.CPYC.ORG Interclub Dinghy Nationals The weekend of April 8th and 9th brought 27 Interclub Dinghies to CPYC to race their National Championship in the waters sailed by the Winthrop Frostbite Sailing Club most winter Sundays. Boats came from Annapolis to Maine. Organizers Bill Rothwell, Steve Braver- man, Linda Epstein, and Dave Nelson did a terrific job putting a fun weekend together. Unfortunately the weather on Sat did not cooperate forcing the cancellation of all racing due to winds gusting into the 30’s. Many thanks to CPYC for opening the bowling alleys, pool ta- bles and darts to keep the sailors occupied during the postponements. Sunday brought a beautiful day with lighter winds allowing the race committee to get in 10 races. Thanks go to the many CPYCers who worked the race committee, and lent their boats to the regatta. Racing was extremely close with less than a second between boats at the finish on numerous occasions. The regatta was won by Ted Ferra- rone and Meredith Killon, 2nd Stephen Benjamin and Brooks Davey, 3rd Paul-Jon Patin and Felicity Ryan, 4th Art and Jennifer Rousma- niere, 5th Jim Bowers and Lydia Brown. • Midyear Report Canada 2020
NIELSEN MUSIC / MRC DATA MIDYEAR REPORT CANADA 2020 1 Introduction HAT A DIFFERENCE A FEW MONTHS MAKE. IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT IT WASN’T even six months ago that Shakira and Jennifer Lopez performed for a tightly packed crowd of more than 60,000 people in Miami at the Super Bowl, while Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas picked up five Grammys at what turned out to be 2020’s last major music business gathering since COVID-19 halted live events. WBy Friday, March 13, the NBA and NHL had suspended play, the NCAA had canceled its spring tournaments, and theaters and live music venues had closed. As “safer at home” orders spread throughout the country, our homes became our offices, our schools, our daycares and our social hubs. Quickly and dramatically, life had changed. Our routines were disrupted, and we struggled to find balance. Still, the music industry was experiencing a strong start to the year. Audio streaming was growing through early March, up 20.9% over the same period in 2019. Total music consumption was up 10.8% in the first 10 weeks of the year. As working from home became a reality for many, some of the key music listening hours, such as during commutes, were disrupted. But one thing that has remained consistent as the pandemic has unfolded is entertainment’s place in helping consumers escape, relax and feel energized. In fact, in our recent consumer research studies, 73% of people said they would go crazy without entertainment during this time. Then, just as many communities began to slowly reopen, the country was shaken by the senseless May 25 killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.

  • 2019 One Design Classes and Sailor Survey
2019 One Design Classes and Sailor Survey [email protected] One Design Classes and Sailor Survey One Design sailing is a critical and fundamental part of our sport. In late October 2019, US Sailing put together a survey for One Design class associations and sailors to see how we can better serve this important constituency. The survey was sent via email, as a link placed on our website and through other USSA Social media channels. The survey was sent to our US Sailing members, class associations and organizations, and made available to any constituent that noted One-Design sailing in their profile. Some interesting observations: • Answers are based on respondents’ perception of or actual experience with US Sailing. • 623 unique comments were received from survey respondents and grouped into “Response Types” for sorting purposes • When reviewing data, please note that “OTHER” Comments are as equally important as those called out in a specific area, like Insurance, Administration, etc. • The majority of respondents are currently or have been members of US Sailing for more than 5 years, and many sail in multiple One-Design classes • About 1/5 of the OD respondents serve(d) as an officer of their primary OD class; 80% were owner/drivers of their primary OD class; and more than 60% were members of their primary OD class association. • Respondents to the survey were most highly concentrated on the East and West coasts, followed by the Mid- West and Texas – though we did have representation from 42 states, plus Puerto Rico and Canada. • Most respondents were male.

This includes the regatta committee, club officers, sponsors, donators, club members, workers, race committee, and participants, young and not quite as young. So many hands went into making this regatta a success that to recognize individual names would be dangerous as someone would be left out accidentally. It is also essential to state that this kind of money could not have been raised without tremendous support and participation from the Pleas- ant Park and Winthrop Yacht Clubs and the commu- nity of Winthrop. That doesn’t happen anymore. Now, she is in the thick of the action, getting good starts and sailing like an old timer. The Southern California Women’s Sailing Association was organized in 1974 to promote interclub dinghy racing in Southern California. The organization is comprised of women and men sailors, age 18 and up, who race Naples Sabots. Currently, five regattas are held during the year at various yacht clubs, which includes The Ladies (and Gents) Regatta in October at ABYC. The “Most Improved Sailor” trophy is almost all wood. It highlights two metal Naples Sabots on a wooden beryl. The Trophy was first awarded in 2012 to Carol Pearson, MBYC; in 2013 to John Hauk ABYC; in 2014 to Darin Jayden; SDYC/Dean Macdonald, NHYC, and in 2015 to Dana Fischbeck, NHYC/Dee Van Horne, SDYC. Originally it was used as the Naples Sabot Women’s B trophy from 1982-1991 until it was replaced by another trophy. In 2012 it was rededicated and has been presented to the Most Improved Sailor ever since. It will be on display at Alamitos Bay until this coming October.

RIGHT, AND WHICH MICROBIOLOGIST MAKES CLOTHES OUT OF MILK YARN? #WHYISIT Why is it that most of us know the woman who caused quite a stir when she pioneered a dress made out of meat, but nobody knows the woman who transforms fermented milk into yarn? Isn’t it time we recognized the people who invent the things that make our lives better? People like Anke Domaske, whose biopolymers, made from fermented milk, represent a natural alternative to traditional plastics, and could be used to make textiles and electronics more sustainable.
