  • Fight for the Right: the Quest for Republican Identity in the Postwar Period
FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT: THE QUEST FOR REPUBLICAN IDENTITY IN THE POSTWAR PERIOD By MICHAEL D. BOWEN A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2006 Copyright 2006 by Michael D. Bowen ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project is the culmination of many years of hard work and dedication, but it would not have been possible without assistance and support from a number of individuals along the way. First and foremost, I have to thank God and my parents for all that they have done for me since before I arrived at the University of Florida. Dr. Brian Ward, whose admiration for West Ham United is only surpassed by his love for the band Gov’t Mule, was everything I could have asked for in an advisor. Dr. Charles Montgomery pushed and prodded me to turn this project from a narrow study of the GOP to a work that advances our understanding of postwar America. Dr. Robert Zieger was a judicious editor whose suggestions greatly improved my writing at every step of the way. Drs. George Esenwein and Daniel Smith gave very helpful criticism in the later stages of the project and helped make the dissertation more accessible. I would also like to thank my fellow graduate students in the Department of History, especially the rest of “Brian Ward’s Claret and Blue Army,” for helping make the basement of Keene-Flint into a collegial place and improving my scholarship through debate and discussion.

THE ELAINE RIOT OF 1919: RACE, CLASS, AND LABOR IN THE ARKANSAS DELTA by Steven Anthony A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee May 2019 ABSTRACT THE ELAINE RIOT OF 1919: RACE, CLASS, AND LABOR IN THE ARKANSAS DELTA by Steven Anthony The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2019 Under the Supervision of Professor Gregory Carter This dissertation examines the racially motivated mob dominated violence that took place during the autumn of 1919 in rural Phillips County, Arkansas nearby Elaine. The efforts of white planters to supplant the loss of enslaved labor due to the abolition of American slavery played a crucial role in re-making the southern agrarian economy in the early twentieth century. My research explores how the conspicuous features of sharecropping, tenant farming, peonage, or other variations of debt servitude became a means for the re-enslavement of African Americans in the Arkansas Delta.

  • NEWS LETTER, to Let You Know We Haven't Forgotten SECTION You
NINETY EDITORIAL ALT. Ninety-Bines, attention! We ask y o u r aid NINE for your Sister Flyers! The recent termination of recruiting and train ing of additional Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) is a matter of sincere regret to all women pilots. This project opened opportunities for women in aviation which have never before been available and offered women pilots a chance to prove that their performance on military aircraft equalled that of TV male pilots. Unfortunately many girls who had been accepted for the June 30th class did not know of its cancella tion until they reached Sweetwater, since telegrams notifying them of the order arrived, in many cases, too late. All Ninety-Nines should be cognizant of the facts leading to this cancellation. The Costello NEWS Bill, H. R. 4219, to give military status to the WASP was reported favorably ty the House Military LETTER Affairs Committee. Subsequent to that report but prior to debate on the floor of the House, the July 15, 1944 Ramspeck Civil Service Committee issued a report on an investigation of the 7JASP program which it LEWS LETTER EDITOR had conducted, recommending immediate discontinu ance of training, except for those already enrolled. Bettie Thompson, 724 N. 63rd St., Shortly thereafter, H. R. 4219 was killed by vote Philadelphia 31, Penna. of the House. Deadline - 5th of Each Month The WASPs have been doing a commendable job for the Army Air Forces and it was the desire to continue with the WASP training program as well as NINETY- NINES to give military status to this group.

The Life of the Mind: An Intellectual Biography of Richard Hofstadter Andrew Ronald Snodgrass Jesus College This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy November 2018 Abstract The Life of the Mind: An Intellectual Biography of Richard Hofstadter Andrew Ronald Snodgrass Despite his death in 1970, Richard Hofstadter’s work continues to have an enduring influence in American political culture. Yet despite the continued and frequent use of his interpretations in public discourse, his reputation within historical scholarship remains, to a large degree, shaped by perceptions that were formed towards the end of his career. The narrative pervades of Hofstadter as the archetypal New York intellectual who rejected his youthful radicalism for political conservatism which, in turn, shaped his consensus vision of the past. These assessments reflect the biographical tendency to read a life and career backwards. From such a vantage point, Hofstadter’s work is viewed through the prism of his perceived final position. My dissertation challenges the accepted narrative by considering his writing in the context of the period of time in which it was written. In doing so, it is evident that his work belies attempts to reduce his scholarship to reflections of a shifting political standpoint. Whilst it is undoubted that Hofstadter’s historical and political view changed through time, there was a remarkable consistency to his thought. Throughout his career, his writing and lectures were suffused with a sense of the contingency of truth. It was the search for new uncertainties rather than the capture of truth which was central to his work.
