The focus was on examining the role of standardized tests with respect to educational and employment opportunities for women and minorities. Testimony or statements from 14 witnesses are presented. Subjects addressed include the influence of test scores on entry into gifted programs, uses of the Scholastic Aptitude Test, the impact of standardized testing on children at risk, misclassification of minority students, testing of the handicapped, politics of testing, the Admissions Testing Program of the College Board, test fairness assurances, and the Educational Testing Service's sensitivity review process and its standards for quality and fairness. The purpose of today's hearingis to examine the role of a variety of standardized tests withrespect to educational and employment opportunities for women and minorities. Americans, especially students,are forced to take an increasing number of standardized tests.These tests are used for purposes of school admittance, placement andgraduation. Because decisions af- fecting educational opportunities andemployment opportunities are based on these test results, we need to know thateducational and vocational testsare, in fact, valid measurements of ability. The courts in California recentlybanned the administration of any IQ test to black students when itwas found that the tests were biased. When a testscores students on the basis of their race and not their ability, then clearly the testshould not be used. Tests that measure culture in thename of ability deny students and workers equal access to employmentand educational opportunities. On the basis of public policy andsimple fairness, we need to know where test biases exist and whatsteps can be taken so that they can be eliminated. Our witnesses will be appearingon three panels. I am glad to be here and pleased that the subcommittee is focusing attention on this important issue. My name is Phyllis Rosser and I'm a consultant on sex bias in testing. As a contributing editor to Ms. magazine for the past 14 years, I have had articles on education and testing published in Ms. and other magazines as well. I began researching sex bias in test- ing in 1979 and wrote a report for Ms. at that time on the aptitude tests used for college and graduate school admissions, on standard- ized achievement tests that are given from kindergarten through the 12th grade for tracking, on IQ tests that are administered by psychologists, and on interest inventories that are used for career guidance in high school. CIVIL WAR - HARVARD COLLEGE BY CLASS 18 34 Major General Henry C. Wayne CSA Born in Georgia – Georgia Militia Infantry Henry was the son of a lawyer and US congressman from Georgia who was later appointed as justice to the US Supreme Court by President Andrew Jackson. He prepared at the Williston School in Northampton (MA) for Harvard where he was member of the Porcellian Club. In his junior year at Harvard, he received and accepted an appointment to West Point where he graduated 14th out of 45 in 1838. Among his class mates at West Point were future flag officers: Major General Irvin McDowell USA who was defeated at the 1st battle of Bull Run, General P.G.T. Beauregard CSA who was the victor at the1st battle of Bull Run as well as numerous other major Civil War engagements and Lt. General William J. Hardee CSA who served in both Mexican War and throughput the Civil War. After West Point, Henry was commissioned as a 2nd LT and served for 3 years with the 4th US Artillery on the frontiers border of NY and ME during a border dispute with Canada. He then taught artillery and cavalry tactics at West Point for 5 years before joining General Winfield Scott’s column from Vera Cruz to Mexico City during in the Mexican War.

    The Life of the Mind: An Intellectual Biography of Richard Hofstadter Andrew Ronald Snodgrass Jesus College This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy November 2018 Abstract The Life of the Mind: An Intellectual Biography of Richard Hofstadter Andrew Ronald Snodgrass Despite his death in 1970, Richard Hofstadter’s work continues to have an enduring influence in American political culture. Yet despite the continued and frequent use of his interpretations in public discourse, his reputation within historical scholarship remains, to a large degree, shaped by perceptions that were formed towards the end of his career. The narrative pervades of Hofstadter as the archetypal New York intellectual who rejected his youthful radicalism for political conservatism which, in turn, shaped his consensus vision of the past. These assessments reflect the biographical tendency to read a life and career backwards. From such a vantage point, Hofstadter’s work is viewed through the prism of his perceived final position. My dissertation challenges the accepted narrative by considering his writing in the context of the period of time in which it was written. In doing so, it is evident that his work belies attempts to reduce his scholarship to reflections of a shifting political standpoint. Whilst it is undoubted that Hofstadter’s historical and political view changed through time, there was a remarkable consistency to his thought. Throughout his career, his writing and lectures were suffused with a sense of the contingency of truth. It was the search for new uncertainties rather than the capture of truth which was central to his work.

CIVIL WAR - HARVARD COLLEGE BY CLASS 18 34 Major General Henry C. Wayne CSA Born in Georgia – Georgia Militia Infantry Henry was the son of a lawyer and US congressman from Georgia who was later appointed as justice to the US Supreme Court by President Andrew Jackson. He prepared at the Williston School in Northampton (MA) for Harvard where he was member of the Porcellian Club. In his junior year at Harvard, he received and accepted an appointment to West Point where he graduated 14th out of 45 in 1838. Among his class mates at West Point were future flag officers: Major General Irvin McDowell USA who was defeated at the 1st battle of Bull Run, General P.G.T. Beauregard CSA who was the victor at the1st battle of Bull Run as well as numerous other major Civil War engagements and Lt. General William J. Hardee CSA who served in both Mexican War and throughput the Civil War. After West Point, Henry was commissioned as a 2nd LT and served for 3 years with the 4th US Artillery on the frontiers border of NY and ME during a border dispute with Canada. He then taught artillery and cavalry tactics at West Point for 5 years before joining General Winfield Scott’s column from Vera Cruz to Mexico City during in the Mexican War.
