Little Monsters is a comedy fantasy film that stars real-life brothers Fred and Ben Savage. The Savages play brothers Brian and Eric Stevenson. Their hot tempered father is played by Daniel Stern, Fred’s alter ego from the television show The Wonder Years. The movie tells the tale of what really goes on under the beds of children. Brian is upset about moving to a new town because he doesn’t have any friends. Things are made worse when Brian is blamed for making messes and breaking furniture in the household. Brian believes that his brother, Eric, is responsible. The two bicker, and Eric tries to claim that there was an intruder under his bed. Brian agrees to stay in Eric’s room to prove him wrong. That night, Brian sets a trap that captures the intruder. They pull the trap away to reveal a real-life monster that has been causing all of the mischief. The monster introduces himself as Maurice, and he comes from a magical world accessible to reality only under children’s beds. Maurice is portrayed by comedian Howie Mandel. Brian and Maurice come to find that they have a lot in common. Maurice invites Brian to join him in playing pranks on innocent kids. The monster world is a dream world for Brian at first. In that land he is able to play video games as much as he wants and eat as much junk food as he can. The two enjoy several nights of shenanigans. Brian begins to sour on the stunts when Maurice and some fellow monsters stop at a home and try to scare an infant. Brian also starts to show symptoms of spending time in the monster city. He starts to turn into a monster himself, so he saws the legs off of his bed to prevent monsters from entering his home. Trouble starts when Eric is kidnapped by an evil monster. Brian has to team up with Maurice to find and rescue Eric and get back home. Is Little Monsters (1989) about child abuse? First off, I mean no disrespect to anybody that might interpret it this way—I’m not making light of such acts. On the other hand, after watching this film on a whim for the first time since childhood, I was shocked at how the film was either incorporating some rather dark subject matter or was simply being completely tone deaf and oblivious. It being the late ‘80s, I find either to be pretty plausible. So I’m sharing this because I’m legitimately curious if anybody else has noticed it or if anybody knows anything about the production. Anyway, the film is about a young boy, Brian, befriending the monster that comes into his room tonight. Together they get in to hijinks because in monsterland parents can’t tell you can and can’t do. At the same time, Brian’s parents are fighting with each other on the verge of a divorce and don’t notice and/or don’t believe the claims Brian makes about a monster coming into his room at night. So at first this seems like a simple generalizing of a plot to make it fit a different narrative like Cracked tends to do, but it gets weirder. If monsters are exposed to the light of day they become more even more monster-like before they die. This actually becomes a major theme of the movie. In the end, the evil monsters (one is called Snick and the other is called Boy and has the appearance of a grown man wearing a schoolboy uniform with knee high socks) are killed by shining lights on them (that for some reason are fashioned over the kids chest and crotches like armor). Is this a metaphor for shining a light on their abusers? Monsterland also has the weird effect of turning kids into monsters if they stay down there to long. Perhaps this is a nod to the popular notion that being abused as a child is a strong indicator for become an abuser as an adult? For the record, that is no empirical evidence of this, but it is a popular theory among most clinicians and laypeople. The first two scenes that made me begin to question the implications of the film were first when Brian is first wrestling with the monster in his room. The day walks in and yells at him for being noisy and making a mess—the monster isn’t there. but his clothes are which include adult-sized jeans and a t-shirt and a leather vest, laying beneath the kid. It’d be one thing if the monster wasn’t there at all, but the way the scene is set up, it seems weird that the father wouldn’t comment on the clothes being in the kids room, emphasizing the obliviousness of the adults. On the other hand, the other odd scene also involved the father, played by Daniel Stern. He’s been kind of an ass throughout the film, always yelling at the kid and grounding him for a mix of things the kid did, but also some things the monster framed him for. In this scene, he’s sitting on the bed with him and he’s actually being pretty nice. Then he puts his hand on Brian’s bare leg and then kind of runs his hands along him as it shifts into a semi- wrestle before he’s like “alrighty, let’s go have dinner.” Again, this could easily just be an instance of awkward chemistry between Daniel Stern and Fred Savage (who, funny enough, will play the same person in The Wonder Years ) and Daniel Stern not really knowing how to act affectionate as a father. But in the context of the film, it’s just weird enough to make you wonder if there was originally some intent to the direction of the scene. There’s the added element of suggestive dialogue—again, kind of a staple of kids movies in the 80s—but it feels a bit too “on the nose” considering the context. Some examples: After the monster turns his hand into a dog head: “Man’s best friend, his right hand.” (Proceeds to lick his hand) Snick: “You’re scared of me, aren’t you? I like that. Oh, I love that.” “Why doesn’t Boy just play with himself?” Snick and Boy are upset that a kid was brought in and shown their secrets. In the end, Boy decides he wants Brian to himself to “play with.” This leads to the particularly odd scene between Snick and a kid that just ran out of Boy’s chamber. It can be found on Youtube: Snick: “[Boy] asks you a favor, you should take it as a compliment.” Kid: “I tried Snick, I tried.” Snick: “Well, you didn’t try hard enough!” Kid: “My knees, they hurt!” There’s plenty of other small things scattered about too. Brian finally sees how wicked the monsters are when they set out to pick on a baby. When they go to Brian’sfemale friend’s house, she’s sleeping in a shirt with a Betty Boop-like cartoon woman bending over. In short, it all just adds up to being fucking weird. I truly think that pedophilia is a intentional theme of the film. Or, if not of the film, an aspect of the original screenplay that kind of got overlooked as they proceeded to make this film. Oh, and after they defeat the monsters, the kids climb out of monsterland and arrive on a beach next to a sleeping homeless man… on the opposite side of the country from where they live. Then the kids run into the ocean as the film’s credits begin.
