In his introduction to this list, I. Moyer Hunsberger, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty wrote: “The reputation of a faculty member among the community of scholars in his or her discipline is enhanced by publication, as is the reputation of his or her university.” The current list of publications, which will be published annually, has a number of goals: • Showcase faculty research productivity • Increase the visibility of the research, scholarly and creative works by AUC faculty • Help in the preparation of news releases to the media about new research, in efforts to raise the profile of the university and develop deeper connections with the local community • Serve as a vehicle for faculty members to get to know about each others’ work and interests • Help people who look for faculty with expertise in a certain area • Increase interdisciplinary and collaborative research among AUC faculty • Emphasize the importance of research as an integral part of faculty responsibilities • Encourage faculty to increase their research productivity • Serve as a database and historical record of AUC faculty publications The purpose, however, is not for this list of publications to serve as the sole criterion by which a faculty member is judged. The university does not consider the quantity of publications to be a substitute for the quality; and while a faculty member may not have published in 2006, he or she may very well have had several publications in previous years. In addition, the various statistics for the schools and departments are provided in this publication for the record and should not be used — independent of other factors — for comparative purposes. It is also acknowledged that the expected number and type of publications published by a faculty member vary greatly by discipline. The Faculty Publications 2006 was compiled from the hard copies of the 2006 Annual Faculty Reports (thanks to Basma El Maabady at the vice provost’s office). Every effort has been made to make this list as accurate and complete as possible. A draft of this list has been checked for accuracy by the faculty, school deans and other units. Since this is the first annual list compiled since 1983, it contains only faculty who published in 2006. In future years, all faculty names will be listed regardless of whether they have publications. An effort has been made to provide a list which is consistent throughout the university in terms of bibliographic style and format. This style is shown on the next page. Please report any error you find in this list to the Office of the Vice Provost. Ali S.
