Keynote Speakers

Keynote Speech 1: Prof. Suprateek Sarker

Suprateek Sarker is currently a Rolls‐Royce Commonwealth Commerce Professor (Information Technology) at the McIntire School of the University of Virginia. He has in the past served as Visiting Distinguished Professor at Aalto University (Helsinki, Finland), as part‐time University of London Chair of Technology & Information Management at Royal Holloway (U.K.), as Microsoft Chair at Copenhagen Business School (Denmark), and as Philip Kays Distinguished Professor at Washington State University (U.S.). Furthermore, he has had a number of short‐term visiting appointments around the world, in institutions such as University of Mannheim, University of Kassel (Germany), National Cheng Kung University (Taiwan), National Economics University (Vietnam), Cesar Ritz University Center (Switzerland), University of Oulu, Helsinki School of Economics (Finland), University of New South Wales, and University of Sydney (Australia). He has also served as doctoral dissertation examiner for scholars in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and South Africa.

He has published articles, primarily based on qualitative research, in numerous leading academic journals, including MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of the AIS, and Journal of the MIS. Currently editor‐in‐chief of Journal of the AIS, Sarker also serves on the editorial boards of Journal of the MIS, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, and IT & People, former editor‐in‐chief of Journal of Information Technology Case and Application Research, and a former senior editor of MIS Quarterly and Decision Sciences. In 2006, he was a co‐recipient of the Stafford Beer Medal from the Operational Research Society (U.K.) for work on virtual teamwork published in European Journal of Information Systems. Prof. Sarker has also earned teaching awards at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well external grants from organizations including the National Science Foundation (NSF). In August 2016, the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) conferred an honorary doctorate on Suprateek, and in December 2017, he was named a Fellow of the Association for Information Systems (AIS). In April 2018, Suprateek was named Distinguished Alumnus of Operations, Business Analytics, and Information Systems Department, University of Cincinnati, where he completed his Ph.D. studies in 1997.

Keynote Speech 2: Prof. Vallabh Sambamurthy

Vallabh Sambamurthy (Ph.D., University of Minnesota, 1989) is the Eli Broad Professor and Associate Dean of Outreach and Engagement. He was the chair of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems between 2012‐2017. He has previously served at the business schools at The University of Maryland and The Florida State University. He was associated with the successful launch of the top‐10 MS program in Business Analytics at the Broad College. He is a leading global expert on how firms compete in the digital economy. His work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Financial Executives Research Foundation, and the Advanced Practices Council (APC). He has published his research in top journals such as the Management Science, Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, Organization Science, and the IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management.

He has served on the editorial boards of numerous journals, including MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, and Management. He was the Editor‐in‐Chief of Information Systems Research for a six‐year period during 2005‐2010. In recognition of the impacts of his scholarly work and teaching he was selected as Distinguished Fellow of the Information Systems Society at INFORMS (2011), Fellow of the Association of Information Systems (2009), and the Distinguished Alumnus of the National Institute of Technology (Tiruchirapalli, India). He has also been awarded the John D. and Dortha J. Withrow Endowed Teacher Scholar Award by the Broad College and the Excellence in Research awards by the Accounting and Information Systems Department. Recently, he received the William Beal Distinguished Faculty Award, the highest honor accorded by Michigan State University in 2014.

Qingdao University, situated in the historical and cultural city of Qingdao, is imbued with a profound traditional culture and the spirit of the present. It nestles below Fushan Mountain and faces the Yellow Sea. Its predecessor is Qingdao Specialized Institute of Higher Learning founded in 1909. The institute, unique in medical education, underwent various stages as Qingdao Medical School, Qingdao Medical University, and Qingdao Medical Specialized School. Another historical source of Qingdao University is Private Qingdao University, established in 1924 and then named as National Qingdao University and National Shandong University. In 1946, National Shandong University merged with Qingdao Medical Specialized School, resulting in the establishment of the Medical School, which was later separated from Shandong University in 1956 and became Qingdao Medical School. Shandong University moved to Ji’nan in 1958, and Qingdao University started its reconstruction in 1985.

Qingdao Textile Technical School, established in 1950, was renamed Shandong Textile Engineering Institute in 1978, after two periods as Qingdao Textile Vocational School and then Shandong Textile Industry School. Qingdao Teachers Training College, founded in 1951, underwent different phases as Qingdao Work-study Teachers College and Qingdao Normal College, and was renamed Qingdao Teachers College in 1981. In 1993 Qingdao University was formed by merge of Qingdao Medical College, Shandong Institute of Textile Science and Technology and Qingdao Normal School.

After years of construction, Qingdao University has evolved into a large-scale comprehensive university with multiple disciplines of natural science and humanistic and social science. West History and Culture Conservation Area boasts architectures with different exotic styles and has been called a “world expo on architectures”. The Badaguan architectural cluster was cited as the “most beautiful urban district in China”. The east-west seaside sightseeing path, Donghai Road, Hong Kong Road and Macao Road, which run through a series of scenic spots such as the Huiquan Square, the May 4th Square, China sea level datum, Polar Ocean World, the Seaside Sculpture Park, and Qingdao Grand Theater, constitute a fascinating seaside landscape.

Badaguan Lying between Huiquan cape and Taiping cape, Badaguan faces the rippling

Taiping bay. In Badaguan area, more than 200 villas of exotic style are scattered among the flora and fauna. There are so many villas that the scenic spot is called a world architecture museum. Crossing the scenic area are ten roads built in 1931 and lined with many varieties of trees such as peaches, crabapples, pine trees and ginkgoes. Eight of the roads are named after the eight great passes of the great wall, and thus the area was named “Badaguan”.

May 4th Square This square is named to honor the May 4th movement which took

place in 1919. Consisting of two aquaria and a park, the area is

decorated with statues and springs, and surrounded by pine trees,

meadows and flowers. Today, it has become the symbol of modern

Qingdao.

Laoshan National Park Laoshan National Park comprises three parts and extended land and sea views. The main peak Jufeng Peak is 1,133 meters above the sea level. Being the highest peak along China’s 18,000km-long continental coastline, Jufeng Peak is famed as China’s No. 1 seaside mountain and a famous Taoist mountain. It was a national demonstration place for civilized scenic tourism, and a 5A national tourist attraction.

Qingdao Beer Museum Located at No. 58 Dengzhou Road, Qingdao Beer Museum covers an area of more than 6,000 square meters, and composes of 3 tourist areas including century-old beer history and culture, beer production line, multi-function entertainment area. As the only beer museum in China, Qingdao Beer Museum has been awarded a key national preservation unit of cultural relics, a 4A national tourist attraction.

Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center

Qingdao Olympic sailing center scenic area is located in the Qingdao

Fushan bay, the total area of about 45 hectares. It is the 2008 Olympic

Games in Beijing Olympic and Paralympic games of the XXIX Olympiad

sailing events held venues. Olympic sailing center scenic mountain face the

sea, the scenery pleasant, is the only "national level demonstration zones

of coastal tourism and leisure”. Qingdao is known as "sailing city", as the most can reflect the Qingdao city features and display the image of the city scenic area.

Zhanqiao Pier

Zhanqiao pier, built in 1891, is the symbol of Qingdao. After several restorations, from being a simple military harbor, it is now open to tourists. The pier is 440 meters long. There is an octagonal pagoda of distinctive Chinese style, “Huilan pagoda” at the end of the pier. From the top, tourists can fully view the magnificent sea. Along the shore is the beautiful pier park, which is a pleasant and quiet place for tourists to rest or enjoy the scenery of little Qingdao isle and its white tower.

Catholic Church

Located in Zhejiang road, the Catholic Church, originally named St.

Michael’s, was built by the German in 1934. The 60-meter-high

building, covering 2470 square meters, is one of Chinese famous

catholic churches.

Xiaoyushan Park

Built in the Chinese classical style, the hill-top park is named after the Yu hill. The designers and architects made use of the local landscape and their imagination in laying out the park. The

18-metre-high, three-story and eight-cornered “seeing waves tower” bears an inscription by Wu Zuoren, a famous calligraphist.
