Rethinking Arboreal Heritage for Twenty-First-Century Aotearoa New Zealand
NATURAL MONUMENTS: RETHINKING ARBOREAL HERITAGE FOR TWENTY-FIRST-CENTURY AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND Susette Goldsmith A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2018 ABSTRACT The twenty-first century is imposing significant challenges on nature in general with the arrival of climate change, and on arboreal heritage in particular through pressures for building expansion. This thesis examines the notion of tree heritage in Aotearoa New Zealand at this current point in time and questions what it is, how it comes about, and what values, meanings and understandings and human and non-human forces are at its heart. While the acknowledgement of arboreal heritage can be regarded as the duty of all New Zealanders, its maintenance and protection are most often perceived to be the responsibility of local authorities and heritage practitioners. This study questions the validity of the evaluation methods currently employed in the tree heritage listing process, tree listing itself, and the efficacy of tree protection provisions. The thesis presents a multiple case study of discrete sites of arboreal heritage that are all associated with a single native tree species—karaka (Corynocarpus laevigatus). The focus of the case studies is not on the trees themselves, however, but on the ways in which the tree sites fill the heritage roles required of them entailing an examination of the complicated networks of trees, people, events, organisations, policies and politics situated within the case studies, and within arboreal heritage itself. Accordingly, the thesis adopts a critical theoretical perspective, informed by various interpretations of Actor Network Theory and Assemblage Theory, and takes a ‘counter-’approach to the authorised heritage discourse introducing a new notion of an ‘unauthorised arboreal heritage discourse’. -

The thesis may not be reproduced elsewhere without the permission of the Author. i Portrayals of the Moriori People Historical, Ethnographical, Anthropological and Popular sources, c. 1791- 1989 By Read Wheeler A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History, Massey University, 2016 ii Abstract Michael King’s 1989 book, Moriori: A People Rediscovered, still stands as the definitive work on the Moriori, the Native people of the Chatham Islands. King wrote, ‘Nobody in New Zealand – and few elsewhere in the world- has been subjected to group slander as intense and as damaging as that heaped upon the Moriori.’ Since its publication, historians have denigrated earlier works dealing with the Moriori, arguing that the way in which they portrayed Moriori was almost entirely unfavourable. This thesis tests this conclusion. It explores the perspectives of European visitors to the Chatham Islands from 1791 to 1989, when King published Moriori. It does this through an examination of newspapers, Native Land Court minutes, and the writings of missionaries, settlers, and ethnographers. The thesis asks whether or not historians have been selective in their approach to the sources, or if, perhaps, they have ignored the intricacies that may have informed the views of early observers. The thesis argues that during the nineteenth century both Maori and European perspectives influenced the way in which Moriori were portrayed in European narrative. -

New Zealand Journal of History, 36, 1 (2002) Chris Hilliard Pioneering History NEGOTIATING PAKEHA COLLECTIVE MEMORY IN THE LATE NINETEENTH AND EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURIES* IN APRIL 1884 Thomas Hocken stood before a group of nearly 40 men who had gathered to establish the Early History Society of Otago. Hocken was known by his contemporaries as a 'gentleman who had always taken a great interest' in New Zealand's history.1 On this occasion he gave a speech designed to rouse interest in the foundation of Pakeha New Zealand: 'Whatever his nationality, the pioneer delights to record, and his successors to hand down, the minutest incidents of early history'. He hoped that the story of Pakeha origins, symbolized by the arrival of the immigrant ships Tory, Cuba, Wild Watcli, John Wicklijfe, Randolph and Cressy, would become 'as complete and full of interest' as the accounts of Maori or white American origins (with their well-known immigrant vessels the Arawa and Tainui or the Mayflower). He urged his audience to emulate the Historic Society of New York in 'raising from oblivion a thousand interesting details connected with the settlement... which but for such timely efforts must have been irrevocably lost.'2 Another founding member, the Rev. Dr D.M. Stuart, also spoke with a sense of urgency: 'For years he had advocated the formation of such a society'. His friend — old settler Mr Cutten — had recently died, taking much information on early Otago with him. However, J. Hyde Harris outdid both Hocken and Stuart with a remarkably long-standing intention to gather Otago's foundational history. -

The collection currently known as the John Logan Campbell Papers (MS‐51) consists of five separate collections: 1. John Logan Campbell’s personal papers and his business enterprises ‐ these reflect both business and social history from the 1840s to 1910. There is also a section containing papers of wife Emma and daughter Winifred. 2. Cornwall Park Trust Board. Records. Cornwall Park management covering the period 1902 ‐ 1930s. 3. Winifred Humphreys (nee Campbell). Papers, 1910 ‐ 1930s. 4. Russell Stone. Photocopies of documents, a single original letter and donated from other sources. 5. Sir Colin Campbell. Includes JLC’s bible. Size 6.5 linear metres Date range 1806‐1975, primarily 1840s‐1930s Physical description Holograph Printed Plans Architectural drawings Photographs Provenance The Cornwall Park Trust Board deposited the first two collections in 1957. Winifred Humphrey’s papers were gifted from the Alexander Turnbull Library in the early 1960s. May 26, 2018 Professor Russell Stone and Sir Colin Campbell gifted the remainder in 1975. Earlier archival practice clumped like material; hence the collections are catalogued under the one manuscript number – MS‐51. One of the advantages of this ‘clumping’ was to facilitate use; it was easy to add to existing inventories. However, it is current archival practice to maintain the integrity of individual collections through provenance. Today collections are held in their own right and linked through catalogues, indices and finding aids. -

The above proverb establishes the rights and authority of Tainui iwi to its history and future. Translated as “Waikato of a hundred chiefs, at every bend a chief, at every bend a chief”, it tells of the magnitude of the significant peoples on every bend of its great banks.1 Many of those peoples include Tainui women whose stories of leadership, strength, status and connection with the Waikato River have been diminished or written out of the histories that we currently hold of Tainui. Instead, Tainui men have often been valorised and their roles inflated at the expense of Tainui women, who have been politically, socially, sexually, and economically downplayed. In this study therefore I honour the traditional oral knowledges of a small selection of our tīpuna whaea. I make connections with Tainui born women and those women who married into Tainui. The recognition of traditional oral knowledges is important because without those histories, remembrances and reconnections of our pasts, the strengths and identities which are Tainui women will be lost. Stereotypical male narrative has enforced a female passivity where women’s strengths and importance have become lesser known. -

Pastoralist and Maoris FREDERICK WELD AT WHAREKAKA TRAVELLERS motoring into present-day Martinborough and taking time to observe the countryside traversed by the main road may pause to read an Historic Places Trust sign some ten kilometres south of the township. The placard marks the site of Wharekaka, the first sheep station to be established in the Wairarapa valley and the first of three properties belong- ing to one of the most successful pastoral partnerships in early New Zealand history. This article seeks to examine one of the least well docu- mented aspects of early pastoralism in the Wairarapa, the nature of rela- tions between the squatters and the local Maori people, the Ngati Kahungungu. by focussing in some detail on Frederick Weld's experiences and reactions during his first year in the valley. The study is important, first, for the insight it gives into a relatively neglected area of cultural contact in early New Zealand history. Second, the experiences and atti- tudes formulated during the first year in the valley help to explain the native policy pursued by Weld when minister of native affairs and premier, and the origin of the 'self-reliant' defence policy which marked his premiership in 1864-65. Weld was a most unlikely pioneer. Born into a prominent West Country Catholic family, twenty-year-old Frederick had arrived in Port Nicholson on St George's Day 1844 with a modest sum of gold sovereigns, and New Zealand Company land orders for one town and one hundred country acres in the settlement. In outward appearance this genteel and devout 'handsome blue-eyed aristocrat',1 with his long brown curling hair, slim build and history of delicate health, seemed singularly ill-fitted for the rigours of any kind of rough pioneering life. -

LIKE HIS father, Edward Gibbon Wakefield, Jerningham Wakefield had energy, ambition, the ability to mesmerise, and a fluent pen. With his father, he immersed himself in the politics of colonisation and of colonies them- selves, but to even less personal advancement. For Jerningham Wakefield managed his money, thirst and sexual energy imprudently enough to thwart his more public ambitions. He achieved little but a modest share in the life-work of another man: his father. Yet our historical sources would be the poorer without his lively Adven- ture in New Zealand, first published in 1845, soon after his return to Eng- land. That personal story is unexpectedly continued in a journal recently discovered, lodged in the Alexander Turnbull Library, and now published for the first time. The Journal, written mainly in London in 1845 and 1846, is compressed, often cryptic, and comparatively short. Its contents will re- quire few historians to revise their conclusions about either the Wakefields or the politics of colonisation. Nevertheless it contains considerable circum- stantial detail of a particular stage in the evolution of the Otago and Can- terbury schemes of settlement, and also a few interesting scraps of informa- tion about the New Zealand Company's dealings with the Whig and Tory politicians of the day. The change of government in 1846 brought hope to most protagonists of colonisation, but immediate disappointment to the Wakefields. -

Everywhere the waves created turbulence and activity but they only engulfed a few small islands; more substantial landmasses were hardly touched at all [and]…the high ground remained completely untouched. Ivor F. Goodson (1994, 17) iii Abstract This thesis examines the development of the New Zealand secondary school history curriculum in the late 20th century and is a case study of the transformation of an academic discipline into a senior secondary school subject. It is concerned with the nature of state control in the development of the history curriculum at this level as well as the extent to which dominant elites within the history teaching community influenced the process. This thesis provides a historical perspective on recent developments in the history curriculum (2005-2008) and argues New Zealand stands apart from international trends in regards to history education. Internationally, curriculum developers have typically prioritised a narrative of the nation-state but in New Zealand the history teaching community has, by and large, been reluctant to engage with a national past and chosen to prioritise English history.
