Cities Call for a More Sustainable and Equitable European Future
Cities call for a more sustainable and equitable European future An open letter to the European Council and its Member States Tuesday 30th April 2019, President of the European Council, Heads of States and Governments of the European Union Member States, We, the undersigned mayors and heads of local governments have come together to urge the Heads of States and Governments of the Member States to commit the European Union (EU) and all European institutions to a long-term climate strategy with the objective of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 – when they meet at the Future of Europe conference in Sibiu, Romania on 9 May, 2019. The urgency of the climate crisis requires immediate action, stepping up our climate ambition and pursuing every effort to keep global temperature rise below 1.5C by mid-century, as evidenced by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5C. Current energy and climate policies in place globally, set the planet on a global warming pathway of 3°C. We are reminded of the inadequacy of our response to climate change, by the thousands of young people demonstrating each week on the streets of European cities - and around the world. We cannot let the status quo jeopardise their future and those of millions of European citizens. We owe it to the next generation to make more ambitious commitments to address climate change at all levels of government and in every aspect of European policy-making. We acknowledge and support the positions of the European Parliament and of the Commission to pursue net-zero emissions as the only viable option for the future of Europe and the world. -

The sea breeze and the smell of the sea will accompany your bicycle along the flat coasts and cycle paths made along the tracks of old railway lines, with some differences in altitude to avoid the busier roads. From the charm of the Cote d’Azur you will arrive at the narrow alleyways of villages beside the sea, following ancient Roman roads perched above the sea and paths surrounded by olive groves, until you reach the charming old districts of Genoa. Without forgetting the joys of the palate: you will enjoy fish just fished from the sea and accompanied by km zero oil, fragrant Ligurian focaccias and pasta with pesto alla genovese, and you will understand why Mediterranean cuisine is one of the most famous in the world. The tips of Valentina: Enjoy a ratatouille niçoise sitting at a table in Place Rossetti, in the heart of the old town of Nice; You will get lost in the “carrugi” (alleyways) of Parasio, the old district of Porto Maurizio, allowing yourselves to be surprised by the sudden views over the sea through the red houses; Enjoy a bathe in the clear waters of the Costa dei Saraceni, at Finale Ligure; Walk along the quay in the old port of Genoa, admiring the town from the benches of Calata Gadda. -
European Train Names: a Historic Outline Christian Weyers
ONOMÀSTICA BIBLIOTECA TÈCNICA DE POLÍTICA LINGÜÍSTICA European Train Names: a Historic Outline* Christian Weyers DOI: 10.2436/15.8040.01.201 Abstract This paper gives a first overview of the onomastic category of train names, searches to classify the corpus and reviews different stages of their productivity. Apart from geographical names (toponyms, choronyms, compass directions) generally indicating points of origin and destination of the trains in question, a considerable number of personal names have entered this category, of classical literary authors, musicians and scientists, but also of many fictional or non-fictional characters taken from literature or legendary traditions. In some cases also certain symbolic attributes of these persons and finally even heraldic figures have given their names to trains. In terms of their functionality, train names originally were an indicator of exclusiveness and high grade of travel quality, but they developed gradually, as they dispersed over the European continent, into a rather unspecific, generalized appellation, also for regional and local trains. After two periods of prosperity after 1950, the privatisation of railway companies starting in the 1990s had again a very positive effect on the category, as the number of named trains initially reached a new record in this decade. ***** The first train names appeared in England in the 1860s in addition to names for steam locomotives, and on two different levels. The Special Scotch Express between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh (inaugurated in 1862) was called by the public The Flying Scotsman from the 1870s, but it succeeded as the official name not before 1924. Also the names of the German diesel trainsets Der Fliegende Hamburger and Der Fliegende Kölner were colloquial name creations, as were the Train Bleu and the Settebello operated from 1922 and 1953 but officially named in 1947 and 1958, respectively. -

The League is now a classic far right party fighting immigration, the ‘cultural hegemony’ of the Left, and the economic ‘dictatorship’ of the European institutions, while claiming to defend the Christian roots of Europe. M5S is a very different type of party, since it lacks a clear ideology and scholars struggle to position it on a classic left-right divide. -

Tunnels and Underground Cities
Tunnels and Underground Cities: Engineering and Innovation meet Archaeology, Architecture and Art – Peila, Viggiani & Celestino (Eds) © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, London, ISBN 978-1-138-38865-9 Milan to Genoa high speed/capacity railway: The Italian section of the Rhine-Alpine corridor P. Lunardi Lunardi Geo-Engineering, Milan, Italy G. Cassani & A. Bellocchio Rocksoil S.p.A., Milan, Italy N. Meistro COCIV, Genoa, Italy ABSTRACT: The new high speed/capacity Milan to Genoa rail line will improve railway con- nections between the Liguria port system with the main railway lines of Northern Italy and the rest of Europe. The project is part of the Rhine-Alpine Corridor, which is one of the corridors of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T core network) connecting Europe’smost populated and important industrial regions. The Rhine-Alpine Corridor constitutes one of the busiest freight routes of Europe, connecting the North Sea ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp to the Mediterranean basin in Genoa, via Switzerland and some of the major economic centres in the Rhein-Ruhr, the Rhein-Main-Neckar, regions and the urban agglomeration in Milan, Northern Italy. The new high speed/capacity rail line will be 53 km long, of which 39 km in tunnels. The new line will be connected to the existing line through four interconnections, 14 km long. The construction started in April 2012 and the completion of the six sections is scheduled for April 2021. The adopted excavation methods are conventional (ADECO RS) and mechan- ized. The paper will describe this complex project from a design point of view for both excava- tion methods, conventional and mechanized. -
