From flooding to droughts and heatwaves, research shows that even if we limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, most European cities will be much more severely affected by climate change than previously thought. Indeed, cities are already experiencing the consequences of man-made climate change. Last summer’s heatwave and drought brought deadly fires to Sweden and Greece, and broke temperature records across much of northern and central Europe. As our climate changes, cities must change too. This forum aims to improve understanding of what challenges cities face and what it means to be a climate resilient city, exploring why (and how) climate resilience can be a priority for the renewed EU institutions. By assessing different resilience strategies from cities across Europe, participants will discuss and determine what aspects of these strategies can be transferred and replicated in other cities. Now cities across Europe are joining the Covenant of Mayors movement for increased action on climate change by pledging themselves to this EU wide target. Today, the community gathers more than 8,800 local and regional authorities across 57 countries. Together, we are working to address the many challenges climate change presents to make our cities sustainable, climate-resilient and vibrant places! Our signatories benefit from encouragement by and examples of other pioneers, while strengthening collaboration with their citizens and local stakeholders through the development and monitoring of climate action plans. Join us for this celebration of politicians’ commitments to the CoM 2030 targets and to the future. Anna-Lisa Boni, Secretary General of EUROCITIES will welcome us and lead us through the night’s celebrations. We will have an introductory address by Alessandra Sgobbi, from DG CLIMA, before moving to hearing from the cities themselves on what it means for them to sign-up to the 2030 targets.
