DETAILS Non-technical project proposal description English: The Northwest Passage Project (NPP) will explore the changing Arctic through an innovative expedition to conduct ocean science research while it actively engages students at sea and reaches diverse audiences through real time interations, an ultra-high definition two-hour documentary, and related community activities. Sailing the fist full-rigged ship, SSV Oliver Hazard Perry into the Northwest Passage of the Canadian Arctic in over a century will provide a visually stunning and historically poignant platform from which diverse audiences will experience a dramatically changing Arctic. NPP is a collaborative effort between the University of Rhode Island, Inner Space Center and Graduate School of Oceanography, the film company David Clark Inc, and several other collaborators, including six Minority Serving Instutitutions. NPP is being supported by a large U.S. National Science Foundation grant. The expedition will include the following Canadians: maritime historian and Arctic guide Ken Burton (Vancouver Maritime Museum), seabird biologist Carine Gjerdrum (Canada Wildlife Service), ice pilot Ray Pierce, and journalist Ed Struzik. The educational components of the NPP will be supervised by the Inner Space Center. Two cohorts, eaching consisting of 18 students (including two Inuit students): six high school students, nine undergraduate students, and three graduate students, will each sail on board for 2.5 week legs. These participants will receive science content instruction as the ship is underway, gain naviagtion and sailing skills, engage in hands-on projects while aboard, and contribute to the live video broadcasts from the Arctic to schools and museums. The documentary film will highlight the expedition's research and document the activities of the diverse group of participants (scientists, historian, journalist, educators and students) and their various experiences. The film will also explore the maritime history of the Northwest Passage, the role of indigenous Inuit people in the Arctic's history and changes affecting their way of life, and the geopolitics of this Arctic waterway, now confronted with threats from resource extraction, shipping commerce, and pollution. NPP's education goals include: * Build connections between scientists, students, and journalists * Educate communities about the impacts of a changing Arctic * Increase public understanding of Arctic research and the scientific process by learning what scientists do, what techniques and tools they use, and how scientists arrive at their conclusions * Enhance public understanding of the importance of science to society and in decision-making * Increase knowledge, create awareness, and stimulate conversations among diverse audiences about the changing Arctic ecosystem The entire expedition will be conducted aboard the sailing ship Oliver Hazard Perry. All visits to shore will be brief day trips on foot with no camping, no structures built, and no motorized transport.
