Directors: NEWLETTER – December 17, 2010 Message from the Eastern Directors: Mr. Ferdinand Haupt, President Ms. Inga Hamilton, Vice-President Mr. Mike Boyd, Director Mr. Christian Poschung, Director Ms. Isabelle Schmid, Director NEWLETTER – December 17, 2010 In this Issue: Message from the Eastern Club President Canadian Hanoverian Society Chairman’s Message Hanoverian inspections 2010 in Alberta and Ontario Hanoverian inspections in British Columbia and Manitoba National Champions 2010 Jumper Breeding Program Update: 2010 Mare Performance Test Accepted Mares Uplands Farm Eastern Canadian Free Jumping Championship Celle Semen Order for 2011 Silent Auction for a Breeding to Grandom News from Central Canada News from Club Members Miscellaneous Message from the Eastern Club President Looking back on the past year from a farmer's standpoint, it is probably true that we have never seen a better year. An early spring with good planting conditions, perfect temperatures and timely rainfalls all through the summer, as well as a timely harvest well before winter set in, will make this year a very memorable one for us. Even commodity prices are high, contrary to other good crop years in the past. It would be nice to see other parts of the economy fairing as well. We will probably have to wait a while before the North American market will somehow recuperate from its problems. Consumers are more careful, and for all of us within the horse industry, we are challenged with a slower market, especially into the States. The exchange rate at par with our Canadian dollar most certainly has an influence there as well. Despite those challenges, we as a Hanoverian Club and as breeders, stay very much committed to high quality standards . The material shown at our mare and foal shows through the last number of years has improved tremendously. This year's Champion Mare at our show in September was Canadian bred, something we as a club should be very proud of! The quality of our 3 and 4 year old mares is also very impressive. Over 50% of the mares shown were awarded the Elite Mare Candidate qualification, compared to Germany where number is between 15- 20%. This demonstrates that we have an excellent breed base here in Ontario. Having said that, I think it's high time for us to try and bring that message across to our potential customers. What can we do? Maybe it's time to expose ourselves a bit more. It should be our next goal to bring the message across that “horse shopping” in Ontario is worthwhile. Our website should be just one tool to accomplish this task. It is high time to make this site more attractive and user-friendly. Another project will be sponsorship of dressage classes for 4 year old horses. My dream is to aim for a Dressage Competition for young Ontario bred horses at the Royal in 2011. A number of club members expressed the wish to expand on our mare show and perhaps add in a free jumping competition for 3 and 4 year old home bred geldings. There are many great ideas for the coming year.... and we need helping hands and members who are willing to bring dreams to reality! Having said that I would like to say a few THANK YOU's to all the people who helped in the past year to make our club a success, especially the Palmer and Parkinson Families for being such great host facilities to our shows, as well as the Poschung Family for hosting the jumping clinic in the spring, as well as holding several directors meetings and their generous hospitality to the club. Last but not least, thanks to Isabelle for her dedication and patience as club secretary. Thanks also to all the breeders who took the time to bring their offspring out to compete at the mare and foal shows. You are all great ambassadors of our breed . To all of you, a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and successful New Year. Yours, Ferdi Haupt Canadian Hanoverian Society: Chairman’s Message by Michael Boyd First, I would like to congratulate our members who took top honours nationally at our 2010 mare shows, foal shows and mare performance tests. Congratulations to Christian Poschung who had both the top mare award and best Canadian bred award for his mare Coco Chanel (Contendro/Drosselklang II). Also, congratulations to Louise and Joe Palmer for their top foal Rosetta, a filly by Rousseau out of a Florencio mare and to Debbie Gibeau for her winning Mare Performance Test mare Sidera (Stakkato Gold/Compliment). In this newsletter you will find draft By-Laws for the formation of a Regional Society to represent the daughter societies and breeders’ groups outside Germany. There are four activities this new organization will participate in: the chairman of this organization will sit on the Verband’s board and represent the interests of Hanoverian breeders outside Germany; this organization will assist in communication between the Verband and the breeding clubs outside Germany; the organization will work to raise the profile of Hanoverians internationally; and the organization will assist international breeders to market their horses with the intention being to establish a website for Hanoverian International. There will probably be a meeting in Verden next year with representatives from all the countries that are organized with daughter societies and breeders’ clubs such as the Canadian Hanoverian Society who are direct members of the Verband. I welcome input from our members on these By-Laws and any suggestions for changes. We have finally selected a website designer who is now working on our new Canadian Hanoverian Society website that will use the URL www.canadianhanoverians.com. The person designing the site is Sandra Werkheiser who designed and updates the American Hanoverian Society website. Hopefully, this will be done early in 2011 and we will have one website presence for all our members in Canada. The site will have tabs for news and information on the Western and Eastern Clubs and include a horses for sale section. Ludwig Christmann has mentioned that anyone who would like to have information on their farm or horses for sale at the Verband’s booth at the Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament next September is welcome to have information on display at the booth. The executive of the Western Club and Eastern Club have agreed that we will ask the Verband to collect membership dues for both clubs with the Verband’s annual fees beginning next year. The Verband’s computer system can only handle billing in Euros and the membership fees will be set at 40 euros for membership in the Western and Eastern Clubs. On another front Ludwig Christmann and myself talked to Chris Gould of the Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association at the Spruce Meadows Masters this past September. The CHS and the CWHBA are talking about both clubs making participation available to members at Mare Performance Tests hosted by either club. Our club will remain committed to hosting a MPT in Calgary at the time of the Masters Tournament, and two sites in Ontario. Our club has problems in having enough mares to do Mare Performance Tests in BC, Sask., Man., and the Maritime Provinces. The thought is that CWHBA members will be able to bring their mares to our three MPT sites and our members will be able to take mares to CWHBA sites. We will try to work out the details with the CWHBA before next year’s MPT. The Eastern Breeders’ Club will be co-sponsoring the annual Free Jumping Competition with the CWHBA on April 17, 2011 at the Orangeville Fairgrounds (information appears elsewhere in this newsletter). This has been a very worthwhile activity for our club to participate in but the participation of our members has been lacking the last few years. I would encourage members with three and four year olds that are jumper bred to enter the competition next April. The CWHBA members have been the largest supporters of the competition and if our club does not show up with enough entries it will be difficult to justify our continued involvement. Finally, I would like to wish all our members all the best in the New Year. Hanoverian inspections 2010 in Alberta and Ontario by Dr. Ludwig Christmann The absolute Hanoverian highlight at this year`s Spruce Meadows Masters was the participation of the Landgestüt Celle. On occasion of the 31st anniversary of this amazing show site and Hanoverian stud the Southern family had invited eight Celle stallions who brought over the atmosphere from the famous Celle stallion parade and very soon became the favourites of the crowd. Four chestnuts were mainly presented in a quadrille – Royal Blend, Don Henrico, Lizitant and the popular Londonderry. Four black stallions (Rotspon, Rascalino, Hochadel and Silberschmied) complemented the four chestnuts to a big quadrille or had individual performances. Hochadel showed a brilliant performance passaging in the long reigns and Rascalino fascinated the crowds as an action trotter besides his cantering sire Rotspon. Every year the Hannoveraner Verband gives a plate for the most successful Hanoverian in the jumper competitions at the Spruce Meadows Masters. This year this prestigious award went to Magic Man, a thirteen-year-old gelding by Acord II/Pilot who won a national class with Ben Asseline. Ben is the sixteen-year-old son of Nancy and Jonathan Asseline and the grandson of Ron and Marg Southern. He is a very talented young rider and there could not be a better person to win this prize. Five mares were presented in the performance test, a pleasing number, which took place at the nearby Teradan Farm.

THE HUMAN HORSE: EQUINE HUSBANDRY, ANTHROPOMORPHIC HIERARCHIES, AND DAILY LIFE IN LOWER SAXONY, 1550-1735 BY AMANDA RENEE EISEMANN DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Craig Koslofsky, Chair Associate Professor Clare Crowston Professor Richard Burkhardt Professor Mark Micale Professor Mara Wade ii Abstract This dissertation examines how human-animal relationships were formed through daily equine trade networks in early modern Germany. As reflections of human cultural values and experiences, these relationships had a significant impact in early modern Braunschweig- Lüneburg both on the practice of horse breeding and veterinary medicine and on the gendering of certain economic resources, activities, and trades. My study relies on archival and cultural sources ranging from the foundational documents of the Hannoverian stud farm in Celle, tax records, guild books, and livestock registers to select pieces of popular and guild art, farrier guides, and farmers’ almanacs. By combining traditional social and economic sources with those that offer insight on daily life, this dissertation is able to show that in early modern Germany, men involved with equine husbandry and horse breeding relied on their economic relationship with horses' bodies as a means to construct distinct trade and masculine identities. Horses also served as social projections of their owners’ bodies and their owners’ culture, representing a unique code of masculinity that connected and divided individuals between social orders. Male identities, in particular, were molded and maintained through the manner of an individual’s contact with equestrian trade and through the public demonstration of proper recognition of equine value.

By Ulrich Hahne 2 Der Hannoveraner 09|2020 Breeding t was not a foregone conclusion that the Her- Iwart von der Decken-Show would take place in 2020. After all, it requires a long lead-time for such an event to take place and for selecting the best mares of an entire vintage. It cannot be conducted as a “late entry”. Scratches multiplied, once events started to be canceled beginning in April. Worries and questions arose: Will we be able to host the Verband’s mare show in Verden this year? How can the mares become selected if there are no mare shows? The questions of the breeders were, howe- ver, always connected with hope that a solution might be found and that this highlight of the Han- noveraner breeding program would not have to be dispensed with. The Hannoveraner Verband deve- loped a “Corona event concept” for the Herwart von der Decken-Show, which started in early May, when most equestrian events were cancelled. At that time, nobody knew what the situation would be like in August.

Hannoveraner Rhythmus 08/2018 Verden, March 26, 2018 UH Edward – a true Hanoverian Celle state stud stallion nominated 2018 Grande-Prize winner Verden. The Celle state stud stallion Edward was awarded the Grande-Prize on the occasion of the Verden Auction in March. The multi-talented Embassy/Fabriano-son was bred by Hans-Heinrich Dittmer from Radbruch. The Hannoveraner Verband honours Edward’s previous breeding performances with this prize which is given to the breeder of a stallion whose first progeny under saddle give rise to great hopes for having a positive influence on the Hanoverian breed. Edward was registered with the Hanoverian Jumper Breeding Program after having successfully accomplished his stallion performance test. As he also displayed fantastic movement, he participated with Charlott-Maria Schürmann at the 2013 European Young Rider Championships where the duo won the silver medal. Edward is one of the last “true” Hanoverian horses that pass on their talent for both disciplines to their progeny. Last year, offspring from his first crops of foals qualified for the Bundeschampionate in all three disciplines, dressage, show jumping and eventing. The Grande-Prize is an award that is linked with the hope that the honoured stallion will sustainably improve the Hanoverian breed. Edward is a worthy winner. The big-framed chestnut was born in 2005 as third foal out of state premium mare Fabienne with Hans-Heinrich Dittmer from Radbruch. Fabienne had once been nominated champion mare in Luhmühlen and was also specially awarded at the 2003 Louis-Wiegels-Show. Her sire Fabriano is well-known for his all-round qualities, just like Edward’s sire Embassy.

  • Hannoveraner Rhythmus on the Roller Coaster
Hannoveraner Rhythmus 08/2021 Verden, March 30, 2021 BZ On the roller coaster Celle state stud stallion Stanley awarded Grande Prize Verden. The Hannoveraner Verband honours Wilfried Berg as breeder of the Celle state stud stallion Stanley with the Grande-Preis. The colourful chestnut stallion out of the extremely successful dam line of Adda has had a unsteady career and is now receiving more attention due to the success of his offspring. The chestnut stallion, born on 24 January 2006 at Wilfried Berg in Burgdorf, grew up at the Hunnesrück stallion breeding stud. In the 300-day test he convinced with very good jumping, was third in this discipline with a jumping index of 129.36 points and moved into his stallion box in the breeding station Verden. Stanley was brought into sport by Sven Rudolph, who celebrated victories in show jumping competitions with him when he was four years old. When Stanley's first foals were born, Eva Bitter was already sitting in the saddle of the powerful jumping stallion, who was now stationed in Ankum. The duo Stanley/Eva Bitter won the Hannoveraner Show Jumping Championships in Verden and the Small Final of the Bundeschampionat in Warendorf. After that, Stanley was injured again an again, so that his sporting career ended as early as 2011. With that, Stanley disappeared from the breeding focus and the numbers of breeding decreased significantly. Now the first results of his offspring are available and the high breeding value in young horse classes (154) confirms his own performance in this age group. In Germany, he ranks third behind two other Celle state stud stallions: Qualito and Diacontinus.
