. Times they are changing – Bob Dylan

Instead of getting on a plane every week to go to the next stage of the Longines Global Champions Tour or the Global Champions League, I’m now following social distancing guidelines, adapting to home confinement due to the outbreak of Corona or Covid-19. So times have changed for me. No competitions, no auctions, no trips. Just staying at home, week in, week out. But I’m lucky. I live in the east of Holland in a green area. Our farm isn’t enormous, but it is big enough to give me an open and free feeling. At no point in time do I feel like I’m trapped in my house. And we’ve got the horse that needs the same daily routine, care and training. To them there is no such thing as a crisis.

I feel I’m extremely fortunate to be around these animals. They decide our schedule and routines. It is their call how much sleep we get once the foaling season starts. So far their behavior is not affected by Corona and in fairness, though I have to stay at home, they make every day different and special. They take my mind off the worries that swarm through the world.

Before, during or after Corona, a good horse is a good horse and although the times are changing, good horses don’t. Normally a good horse doesn’t stay long in our stable, he or she gets sold and we try to find the next one or breed the next one. Now the good horses don’t go anywhere as they don’t get seen at shows. Of course the ball has to keep rolling and the bills need to get paid but it’s also nice to keep these horses a few months longer. I’ve heard many people say they give their horses a break. We don’t. It’s a pleasure to work with a good horse and extra efforts in this difficult period will get rewarded later.

I’m not negative at all about the future. On the contrary. I think this gives me some time to consider and think about the things we do, how and why we do them. Your studbook shifts to online auctions to keep serving its breeders, our favorite restau- rant now runs a take-away service. So it seems that people get creative and look for new ways, new possibilities and new opportunities. Horse people are always considered ‘a special’ and I’m struck by how creative horse people seem to be in these days. Online competitions? Really? Whatever keeps people going!

We’re all in the same boat and Corona influences all of our lives. But wether it takes 2 more months, half a year or more, once we get going again I’m ready to hit the ground running, with an enormous experience from this situation and a hunger to get going again. Always with the horse by my side, that never changes.
